McCain to Dave -- Yep, I Screwed You

Not since the Hanoi Hilton days has John McCain been subjected to an interrogation like the one David Letterman gave him last night....for canceling on the D man last month.

61. I think some of you are missing the point. This has nothing to do with Obama. McCain is so desperate for votes that he is willing to go on a talk show in enemy territory and apologize to the host. How does that make you conservatives feel who railed against Dave a few weeks ago for being mad at McC for not showing up and then McCain crawls back and apologizes to A TALK SHOW HOST. He was totally b*tch slapped by Letterman and he knew he would be.

62. Bad enough "kim" will slam a man for his infirmities, what's worse is McCain suffering those injuries defending her right to say it.

Again,

64. I think that McCain did a GREAT job with Davetheass!! He told the truth-he screwed up-!!! There is no way in hell the Osama would have admitted that!!! If the dem's would listen to what McCain has to say instead of looking at the color of Osama's skin you all would be Republicians!!!! Did you all know that Obama will not tell the truth about who he is or his past! Do you realize that his mother is 100% white and his father is something like 87% Arabic and 13% black!!!! Obama will not give any straight answers. McCain needs to really dig into Obama's back ground and see who he knows and what he did. Think about it people, wouldn't you want someone like McCain that has the knowledge and experience. Do you all know that we have gotten the number 2 person in the Iraq war. We are winning the war and no one is talking about that! If Osama is president look out the country is going to go to hell and we are going to get attacked!!! The media is trying to get their way by telling you that Obama is winning. The only poll that is acurrate is the AP Poll which says there is only a 1% lead!
Go McCain!!!

65. 58. To those who support McCain, do you realize you want a guy as President who cheated on his poor sick wife with a woman 17 years younger than him then married her a month after the divorce? Does that show good character?

Bet you're the same kind of fool that thought Clinton was great getting his johnson serviced in the oval office. Bet you overlooked that didn't you? BO is a SOCIALIST/MARXIST that's the real problem. I was far less concerned about BO until he started showing his true colors spouting his plans to "spread the wealth" and other such nonsense. You can't ignore that and his very questionable associations w/problem people and organizations.

66. Reading the posts in favor of McGeezer and Moosegums sure shows how ignorant some of you are. By the way all you ignoramouses, Obama is an American.... Hawaii where he was born IS a State in the 50 nifty. Study your history. McGeezer is a tired, confused, very rude old man who needs to put on his nightshirt and nightcap and shuffle on down the hallway to his nursing home bedroom. Moosegums can go coach a soccer team for all I care---this woman is so far out of her league that she thinks spunky wink winks will detract from what she's trying to say. As much programming as she's undergone, she still sounds uneducated and foolish. The thought of this woman stepping in as prez should McGeezer be elected......well, I don't have to think about that because Obama is going to win. OBAMA/BIDEN '08

68. #5: Kelli, Barack Obama was born in Hawaii (last time I checked, that's a state in the US) to a black Kenyan father and a white American mother. Further, one must be a natural-born citizen to be President.

If you spent half as much time learning elementary school information as you do posting on TMZ, you might have a brain by now.

69. I have to laugh at folks getting apoplectic over a plan to raise taxes on folk making $250,000 per year from 36% to 39%.... If that will make you not start up a profitable business, go ahead.

By the way, we pay income taxes on income AFTER business deductions. So any business affected has to actually clear a profit of at least $250,000 after paying for all business expenses, including payments to employees, interest on business loans, bank fees, property taxes (on business property, in my case including books which are tools of my trade), computer hardware and software, mileage expenses or business vehicles, medical insurance (close to $7000 per year for me), depreciation on anything business-related, half the self-employment tax (i.e., the equivalent of the employer's share of FICA/Social Security for wage slaves) -- really anything used for the business. A percentage can be used when there is a mix of personal and business use. Depreciable expenses can also be expensed entirely I make out Schedule C (Profit and Loss statement) for my 1040 every year, since I'm self-employed -- take a look at it online at www.irs.gov. Since I work exclusively at home, a good chunk of house expenses are also deductible before taxes are calculated (the home office expense is calculated based on square footage used for business in my case, there's a separate form for the calculation which is transferred to Schedule C as a deduction).

So -- my taxable income is significantly less than my gross income, although I estimate taxes (federal, state, local) as about 35% to 50% of the taxable income and pay estimated taxes quarterly (many richer businesses need to pay monthly). I set aside the required percentage from each payment from clients and adjust in the final estimated tax period since (like many small businesses) my major business purchases are typically at the end of the year, when I have a better idea of true income vs. outgo and can plan to minimize the total tax hit). The self-employment tax (essentially equal to the employee plus employer shares of FICA for people on wages/salaries) for me is still much higher than the federal income tax, so I ain't rich.

I would need to make probably $400,000 to $500,000 per year in gross income (total payments from clients) to be negatively affected by Obama's plan. Instead, like most people, I will probably see some tax reduction instead. But believe me - if I made THAT much money, I would be giving lots away anyway! A little extra 3% on the net wouldn't bother me.

Talking about taxes - I'm quite sure (after my horrible experience with the medical system last year) that I would personally be much better off if we had a system like many other countries, where health insurance is tax-based rather than the current chaotic private insurance system. I would much rather pay the same amount into a national health care system, since when my income is low then my share would also be low. Last year, I had to borrow money to keep up the medical insurance premiums while sick, and the insurance company tried to up the premium another $2400 per year because I finally had a claim after decades just putting money into their pockets (they made me waste at least 80 hours fighting over what they would pay also). I had to increase my deductible from $2500 to $5000 to keep costs down, so if anything happens - I'm really toast. The emergency room will rip through that deductible in minutes. I still haven't recovered financially from last year, and the insurance system is a major reason for that. My small emergency cushion was gone before I got sick, helping my brother with his own medical expenses not covered by his insurance... My brother would like to get a better paying job, but now he has a pre-existing condition (type 2 diabetes) and it's complicated getting any kind of insurance with that even though it's not supposed to matter. I know other people who make decisions about whether or not to change jobs or make more money based on insurance problems and eligibility for state insurance programs for their kids. This is far more serious for many more people than a measly 3% increase in federal taxes for people clearing a quarter of a million per year.

Really, most bankruptcies in the US are due to medical expenses. The whole system is crazy. My Canadian and European colleagues complain about their high taxes until they hear our stories - then they shut up and count their lucky stars. Their systems really do work, and they provide quality medical care for more people at less expense per person (and less time wasted fighting for the money). People with lots of money can always get private medical care anywhere, so nobody should be afraid of a national tax-based system. You still will have at least as many options as you do now. But in this country, it's not only the uninsured who are hurting for medical care - many of us who are insured can't afford to get sick, either.

70. 36. @35 "Obama who?"

That's bull. Obama's tax plan calls for cuts for 95% of Americans. Anyone making under $250,000 would not have their taxes increased. Anyone making under $200,000 would receive tax cuts.

DO SOME RESEARCH!

CHICAGO

Body count in the last six months:
- 292 murdered in Chicago,
- 221 killed in Iraq.

Our leadership in Illinois: Sen. Barack Obama, Sen. D ick Durbin,
Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., Gov. Rod Blogojevich, House leader Mike Madigan,
Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan, Mayor Richard Daley .....all Democrats.

Thank you for the combat zone in Chicago.

Of course they're all blaming each other.

Can't blame Republicans, they're aren't any!

State pension fund $44 Billion in debt, worst in country.

Cook County (Chicago) sales tax 10.25%, highest in country.

Chicago school system one of the worst in country.

This is the political machine that Obama says he comes from in Illinois.

Now Obama says he's gonna "fix" Washington politics?

Let me guess: You don't have a job, money or property. You live w/your parents. You're likely around 20 yrs old. You're probably female. You don't understand SOCIALISM and it's impact on the US as a DEMOCRACY. You think Hollywood has the right idea supporting BO. Your monologue has grown tiresome liberal.

75. Dave's ratings are heading for the toilet.... and rightfully so. He hasn't been funny for years. He needs to hang it up before the only folks watching are the stage crew and the homeless audience that gets free tickets.
