Balfour Remains in Custody -- Still Not Charged

William BalfourThe parole hearing for William Balfour, the main suspect in the Hudson family killings has ended, and he will remain in jail at least until December.

We're told the key evidence against Balfour came from a former girlfriend, who said she saw him with a gun that appeared to match the murder weapon. He will have another hearing on December 3.

The parole board did not make its decision because of the murders, although it's curious why it mentioned the weapon.

The board also said it made its decision because he was in a place where drugs were sold.

Balfour has been in custody since October 24.

31. So the 'key evidence' is his girlfriend says she saw him with a gun that looked like the weapon they found? If that's the 'key evidence' sounds like they have little to go on. Hope we hear more soon about some real evidence.

32. I don't think Balfour did this. I think he is innocent and is secretly helping the police. I don't think the girlfriend told the police that Balfour was involved in the killings either. Wouldn't she be scared of snitching on a gang member? I don't believe that story, why would she tell on him like that without worrying about the consequences? I think all of these leaks are just part of the plan to make the real killers think they got away with it. If Balfour did this, he would be charged by now.

33. I'm with you Luciana!
How unbelievable that anyone thinks most of us would be in jail for drugs!
I have never taken a drug in my life and have never ever been in trouble with the law.
Just goes to show you what kind of lifestyle they are used to!
If it wasn't such a sad commentary, it would be downright laughable.

35. Even though it is hell of suspisous in my heart I just don't want to believe that Julia was involved in this because that would absolutly destroy Jennifer and I am sure that its hard enough for her to hold onto her sanity right now, but to have to live with knowing that your only remaining immediate family caused all of this might put her over the edge.

I really pray that Julia is just a twisted individual regarding mourning and that she wasn't involved. I honestly don't think that Jennifer could handle that, and with these crazy people in her family she is the only one that I am worried about. The rest of them seem to be looking at this like it is some sort of game or free ride in the celebrity. Every single one of them has made sure that their faces have been seen or have spoken to the press. But its obvious that Jennifer is the one that is taking this the hardest. She said she wanted to be left alone and except for the two pictures with her crazy family nobody has seen her.

I pray for Jennifer's strength because this is going to get a lot worse before it gets better or comes to a conclusion.

36. Doormat, Julia has another man already. You haven't seen the pictures of her with him?

37. I knew they would find charges to hold him on. I personally believe that he is guilty. He will be charged with a triple homicide and he won't be out on parole again anytime soon. Just my opinion.

38. I think Balfour's girlfriend may have had a part in moving his car to the parking lot unaware of the murders. Now she's cooperating with police in order to not be charged with being an accomplice.

I would still like to know how Julia got to work that morning. What was Balfour doing there at 7:00 am unless it was to take Julia to work? I think Julia may have told him that Jason kept his "stash" in his SUV and he came back in an attempt to get the keys from Jason and get the drugs. Why else wouldn't he leave in his own vehicle but panicked after the shooting? He and Jason must have had some sort of a drug deal going on and maybe Jason wouldn't give him his cut??!?

I think the police know a lot more than the public has been made aware of and will not jeopardize the case by disclosing it before the time is right.

39. For #7 - curious - I too have wondered about the timeline, related to how the morning of October 24 started out for Julia. One account stated that she was off work that day but went to the company office to pick up her check, another account said that her employer had confirmed that she worked her usual shift that day. (Some Chicago schools were closed for teacher training day, but some were open, and I don't know what route Julia worked). Supposedly she was upset to see that her paycheck was much less than usual, due to a wage garnishment for an unpaid car note that William was supposed to have handled, and she called him to fuss about it. Maybe William agreed to let her have the car, drove to her to drop it off, and made arrangements to have a friend follow him to give him a ride back west after he left the car with Julia? I can't figure out why she would go to the bus yard office to get her check, then be back at home to meet William around 7, if it was indeed a work day for her. If her route was very local, it's possible that she didn't start picking up students until 7:45 or 8:00, but if that were the case, why go to the bus yard very early in the morning to get the check, then go back home, then go back to the bus yard again to get in the bus and start the route? If Friday is payday, it's more typical to just stop at the office and get the check at the start of the usual shift. I can't figure out the logic of the timeline here.

One thing we have heard through the media... police have continued to question Julia, since her original account of her whereabouts that day, as first told to police, ended up not matching her cell phone records.

Remember that police have to be VERY careful about how any actual charges are handled, not only in the best interests of solving the case, but also because of the legal and financial consequences that are associated with the "celebrity" factor.

I too found it odd that the girlfriend's name was mentioned in the newspaper. Most people who have real information about any crime that involves someone with gang associations don't want to be known, and police understand this so they protect their sources as much as possible to ensure their safety. Notice also that the Chicago Police Department had no comment on today's hearing. This made me wonder if the girlfriend's report was "real information" or if she decided to tell some stories to the parole staff and/or media because of her own situation. Much has been speculated about Julia's state of mind through this whole thing... various opinions about her behaviors, grief responses or apparent lack thereof, etc. But though we haven't heard Shonta Cathey's name until today, I'm sure that these are not the happiest days of her life either. Obviously she had a relationship with William... he had been living there, and we've read accounts that identify her as "pregnant." I'm guessing she knew that William and Julia were married, but she figured they were "separated," and probably thought they would be divorced in the near future. Perhaps she had some worries or doubts that she kept to herself, but we can't imagine that she felt good about hearing William's mother make statements on national TV about William's not only "still being together" and "in love" with Julia, but also having another girlfriend too. Participating in framing William for the murders not only "punishes" him for the hurt she may be feeling now, but also helps her rationalize her own situation. Of course, she should be telling herself, "I should not have gotten involved with a marrried man who has another girlfriend besides, since he's clearly not ready for a committed relationship and fatherhood right now." But in real life, it's never easy to be objective about our own emotions, particularly for young people. Perhaps it's easier for her to paint the picture of William as the devil... murderer of a family he'd known since childhood, including the innocent stepchild he'd purported to love as his own... to convince herself, her own family and friends, and the public that she is one of his "victims" too.

I've also thought, like you, that all of this publicity about William being the only "person of interest" known to the public may be a deliberate plan to get the others involved to relax their guard a bit. I still haven't quite figured out how the authorities will make the REAL charges, and get the case to trial, without making some kind of public announcement that will indicate that someone is being held accountable. I guess they haven't figured it out either, so that's why it hasn't happened yet.

42. southside:

Interesting take on the girlfriend. I think you may be on to something. If she was truly eager to see justice served and the guilty be caught, why didn't she call the cops to begin with? I'm absolutely amazed that her name is out there and public.

Since there is reason for his DNA to be all over the house, car, and perhaps the gun, I wonder what sort of evidence the prosecutor would want in order to bring charges? I know they have some sort of test to see if you have recently fired a gun, but I wonder if there is some sort of time limit or way to wash it off?

I do think they are waiting for people to let their guard down and start talking. The more time passes, the more likely they are to do that.

Having said that, it doesn't appear they really have much at this point. Very sad.

43. 26. I don't believe Balfour did this horrible crime, and Chicago police don't either, thats why he hasn't been charged, and he's not "snitching", (which is stupid on his and Julia's part), THATS WHY HE'S IN JAIL!

If it was really a crime for going to jail for drugs, or for parole violation MOSTLY everybody that come on TMZ and including TMZ would be in prision NOW.

LET THIS 5'5 twit go.......

Actually, I think that is one of the funniest things written about this case!

I won't even bother with the "really a crime" part.

We would all be convicted of much less if this board was our justice sytsem! Some things that aren't even illegal!

45. I hate to say this, but I think William's in the right place. At least he has some type of protection in jail. Something tells me that he's serving as an informant and providing the police with significant details concerning this case. If he's disclosing information then they need to put him in some type of witness protection program because as soon as he hits the streets he's a dead man. I really believe he's being set up and his girlfriend is lying on him.

Does anyone have any information about Julian's biological father, Gregory King? I know he's in the same gang as both William and Jason, but I'm interested in learning how much time he served in jail due to the drug bust at the Hudson home back in 2002. Did he just get out recently? The reason I ask is because it seemed kind of weird that he had to serve time while Jason only had to enroll in some sort of drug class. Even Julia was let off the hook. I wonder if they snitched on Greg which is why their cases were dismissed but he was sent to jail. If he was recently released, then he should be looked at as well. It would also be interesting to know whether or not he and Julia were a couple when the bust occured. I'm assuming they were, especially since Julian was only about a year old at the time. Was he expecting Julia to wait for him? Did he feel betrayed because she married one of his fellow gang members? Perhaps he was the one with the grudge. This is just crazy.
