Abdul's Obsessed Fan OD'd There Before

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ Paula Goodspeed, who died of a possible drug overdose/suicide last night, overdosed in the exact same area around one year ago.

We're told cops were called to Paula Abdul's house -- either late last year or early this year -- and found Goodspeed inside her car, unconscious from a drug overdose.

Sources say Goodspeed suffered from "extreme mental illness" that spun out of control in the last two years.

Goodspeed, who was obsessed with Abdul, frightened the "A.I." judge -- LAPD's Threat Management division took the case and there was an active investigation. We're told lots of people tried to get Goodspeed help, but it was all to no avail.

32. This person was mentally ill. Normal people do not do this. I feel sad that this poor woman was not under proper treatment. Watching the video, douchbags like Simon and his commnents about her braces could not have been helpful, but people like this have a brain disease and they cannot help how they feel and act in many cases. They are delusional. I personally beleive that there is a special place in heaven for people who suffer like this--it says that she was a wiccan, but I hope that she was able to find God at some point in her life.

35. God bless Paula and all those with mental illness that suffer ........ The only "hell" is the one we create for ourselves - and being heartless and judgemental must be a hell of it's own.

37. Los Angeles NEEDS to start providing treatment for the mentally ill. And California needs to change its laws to make it mush easier to hospitalize mentally ill people without their agreement. I live in L.A. and there are mentally ill people all over the streets and living in vehicles. ANd I mean, tens of thousands of them. The U.S. used to have genuine mental hospitals and homes, with gates, wide lawns, and locked doors, where people could go for a long while or a lifetime. If you see the pathetic people out living on the streets in L.A., you know this is needed. The notion that mental health treatment can be sought by the mentally ill is false. And so is the notion that people can be treated easily with drugs.

This is all really sad. I am glad this woman did not harm Paula Abdul. It is a shame our society did not assist her in getting the mental health care she needs. Perhaps when we get better health care -- or national health care -- we will have effective mental health care truly available for all. We have no such thing at this time.

I read recently that John Cusack is also having problems with a mentally ill woman stalking him. She is clearly not in her right mind. I keep hoping some effective action is taken before she hurts him -- he is such a favorite actor/ filmmaker. Last I read, there was a warrant out for her arrest, after she had just gotten probation. Come on, she clearly has no control over her actions. She needs to be locked into a mental hospital until if and when she can act sane.

38. I feel so sorry for that family for their loss. Imagine losing a child, or a sibling in this type of nature and it is publicized and criticized. Regardless of the bible's words, which I'm sure is not even necessarily apart of everyone's life who claims it is, try to remember this girl had people who loved her and they are hurting now.

39. This is really sad. I feel for her and her family. Mental illness is such a tragic disease. My roommate was bipolar/manic-depressive and without the ability to afford medication she would just lose it some times. See things.. shakes and cry. I had never seen anything before like it. I watched it progress and only know it is only a matter of time before she becomes a victim of suicide. She has already tried before as it states Paula Goodspeed had as well. They usually do. Again, my thoughts are with the family.

Oh and one last thing... chris? Nothing wrong with being Wiccan. Or for that matter a Jew, Buddhist, Muslim, etc... You don't have to "find god at some point in your life" to 'move on', if that's what you believe. If you would just open your eyes you would see that we ALL believe in a high power, we may just call it different things.

43. Dear lovin la la land,

Go admit yourself right now, cause by MY definition YOU are the dangerous one. Frankly I think they should hand out guns like condoms in Calif. That would solve a LOT of problems.

44. Lots of self-excusing reasons can be advanced to explain away the suicide, but the real reason remains and won't go away: the fundamental premise of the program, which is to brutally insult and humiliate aspiring people before tens of millions of people. This will never be acceptable or justifiable, no matter how far civilization declines, and the consequences for it will eventually descend on those who participate in it, to the extent that they did it willingly, without caring about the fate of the victims, and this includes both the people who make the show and the audience that keeps it alive.

45. This is pretty sad, i cannot imagine how her family feel, on her myspace she gives her account of what went on at the auditions, they edit a lot and put it together to suit themselves, i feel for the girl, she was lead to believe she had a chance by the producers and told she had talent by passing more than one audition, she passed 2 or more auditions (it seems from her account) and performed in front of producers before she got to the final stage of performing in front of the final judges, they (the producers) must have known she would be rejected but thought it would be good entertainment to let her through is how it seems to be, they seemed to be encouraging her and telling her how much they loved her look and i guess her sing/style as well (she did seem to be very artistic so they weren't lying about that), but it seems most of the people are there to be laughed at and a handful really are put through 'cause they have talent, this show should be banned or they should change what they are doing, obviously Paula had an unhealthy obsession with her "Idol" and other deep seated problems that they probably didn't forsee something like this happening so any kind of major event might have had this result for her unfortunately, so you can't blame the show completely but the show should still be careful and screen people before they put them through and not give false hope to people who may or may not be able to handle the rejection at the end, whatever the reason for this poor girls death i hope they learn from it. RIP Paula and Hope her family and friends can heal from this.
