"5th Grade" Winner Goes Belly Up

Kathy Cox may be smarter than a 5th grader, but she's now just as broke as one.

Kathy won $1 million on "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" in September. But here's the deal. She donated her winnings to charity, banking on her husband's construction biz which apparently had been running just fine. But his construction company tanked with the economy, and now they've declared bankruptcy.

Another happy George W memory. 57 days and counting.

46. Now she NEEDS charity. Do you think the charity she gave to will help her out? I highly doubt it. What was she thinking? It is fine to give to charities but give to yourself first. This is not anyone's fault but the teacher who made such a foolish decision. Give to yourself first then to charities. Make sure your own family is safe and will have money for the future before you give it all away. Not real bright.

47. Bush was and still is a unintelligent president. He has put so many people into distress over his deeds. Only racist idiots, rich and poor, put that fool back into office a second time around.

48. Wow. Now remember - I am a fan of TMZ & visit site EVERY day...but I'm about done with that (yes, I know you don't give a ratt's behind) I'm SO SICK of the Bush bashing every where I turn! It's unreal. Everyone wants to forget the basics & try to blame it on the person they just don't like. In the case of the OH SO LIBERAL media (yes, remember not all your fans are liberals!) the Bush bashing & the Obama triumph is shoved down my throat & I am SICK OF IT! Lest you forget about how the Clinton administration relaxed standards for immigrants & low income familes to help them purchase homes...now they can't pay & it adds up. It's pretty basic knowledge that a lot (yes, not all...but A LOT) of the current economy (whether it be Bush years or Clinton or Bush Sr, or Reagan & down the line...) is largely the effect of the PREVIOUS administration because the economy doesn't just belly up in a few years. I am a big supporter of George Bush & I know he is not perfect. No one is. And as I don't like Obama - I will have to turn my attitude towards SUPPORTING OUR PRESIDENT out of respect & just plain ol' decency. I'd be a hypocrite if I did not. But try not to laud your hatred of Bush in every article you can squeeze it into please. This is an article of a woman that made a very loving choice - to give to charity - to turn her back on GREED & in the end...a terrible thing happened to her. Feel sorry for the woman. Or think she should have thought twice about SOME savings. But bottom line - she TRIED to do a good thing & what a nice LIBERAL reach to bring Bush into it. When is the entertainment media going to remember we just want you to stick to entertainment & leave politics out of it. On either side. If I want to hear about Bush pro or con - I'll go elsewhere.
No go ahead & everyone jump on the TMZ bandwagon & lash out at me for daring to be pissed at this...I am quite sure the hate is going to flow my way. Because no one can REALLY have an opinion anymore. (Of course TMZ can have theirs...just leave it out of stories...you're here to entertain BOTH ends of the spectrum...)

49. She should have known that anything could happen and that her husband could have loss his job/business. She should have at least kept half of it. The economy is bad, and jpb losses are coming out of nowhere these days.

Now I understand that she promised that she would give her winning away to charity in her neighboorhood, but I think the people in her town would have been cold hearted to think bad of her for keeping some for herself. It's no secret that things are bad in the economy, and everyone needs to try and save a little something.

This woman should have taken care of herself first and then taken care of the charities.

50. Bad news, Arnold. Obama is not coming to your house to powder your ass and put a fresh diaper on you and then give you a balloon and a sucker. Now read Karen's comments, go to You Tube and watch the C-Span videos, and then come back with something real and intelligent to say. And if you think real hard, you'll find much of your distress is self-inflicted cognitive dissonance.

51. G. Bush was an awful president. He plays with the military like their toy army men that can't die. He makes the dumbest decisions when it comes to how the US spends it's money. That money is not Monopoly Game money, it's real and being put to the wrong use in some areas.

I'll be glad when Bush is long gone too.

52. Bush's fault?? Are you kidding? TMZ, you're almost as ignorant as x17. It was a DEMOCATIC Congress who urged Fannie and Freddie to lower its requirements for home-buying. Bush has been kicked around like a helpless dog while you stupid libs blame everything that was mostly instigated by dems. Time will tell the truth. In the meantime, you should be very afraid of "The One"'s presidency. Well, unless you're a minority deadbeat. Free candy for all!!!

53. Umm - obviously TMZ doesn't do much research - its much easier to blame Bush. Maybe instead it was from the Clinton years when legislation was passed forcing banks to approve loans for people so they could buy houses they ordinarily couldn't afford, eventually putting so much pressure on banks that they collapsed. Ooops - but of course, its Bush's fault - that way you can make a quick post.

54. Ark, I think it's pretty clear you're probably a Barack hater and Bush racist lover.

And I think she should have keep at leat 20,000 for herself.

55. People stop playing the blame game. It is no one's fault but this lady who made the decision to do what she did. Stop bringing politics into this or the state of the economy. Let's start taking personal responsibility for the reason things are the way they are. Is it that the economy is really in that bad of shape or is that people maxed out their credit cards and bought homes and cars they couldn't afford in the first place and deep down you know that is true. It isn't Bush or Obama or anything else. It is our OWN responsibility. We need to get smart about money and stop being so dumb! Live within your means and save some of that hard earned cash instead of buying those damn handbags and stupid a$$ shoes! Think about your future!! Stop living in the now and acting like you have as much money as Oprah.

56. Last laugh, you're a joke. Barack is not "The One" like you meant it. But I hope he helps. Bush is rich white trash. And this white lady above should have kept some of her winning. That was pretty stupid to offer every penny of it to charity. It was nice, but still not a smart move to do.

Posted at 2:37PM on Nov 23rd 2008 by Last Laugh is a joke

57. I don't like Bush.

And this post is about this woman who should have made a better decision to keep some of the money for her own family. Sure, saying that you're going to give all your winnings to charity sounds nice, but it doesn't feel nice. Just look at her situation. She's on the Internet now with her business being told because she made a stupid decision to give every last dime to someone else. This lady should have known better. And her husband is at fault too because they both are adults that knew that his job was not that darn secure.

58. Kevin, your posting only shows your ignorance. So because Ark disagrees, he is a "Barack hater and a Bush racist lover." What the hell does that even mean? I guess I can look forward to the next 4 years of being called a racist because I disagree with Obama on pretty much everything. So much for intelligent discourse.

59. Obama is an elitist who is sending two daughters to private schools at over $28,000 per child. If the schools aren't good enough in quality or safe enough for his daughters, he should considering fixing our public schools. If we demand that all politicians/public servants send their children to public schools, changes in curriculum, quality of teachers, and supplies would happen so quickly that our heads would spin. Instead, they send their children to private schools and ignore the state of public schools.

Kathy Cox should not be handling school funds when she isn't capable of making rational decisions with her own finances.

60. clearly she isnt smarter than a 5th grader! guess she was 'sharing the wealth". see how that works people, get ready for 4 more years of that with the clinton redeaux, err, new obama administration. i guess by 'change' he meant picking the old clinton WH staff! lol @ you bush haters. someone doesnt know how goverement works. might want to check up on who was running the FEC, SEC and freddie/fannie mac....yeah, democrats. sorry, tennesee.
