"5th Grade" Winner Goes Belly Up

Kathy Cox may be smarter than a 5th grader, but she's now just as broke as one.

Kathy won $1 million on "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" in September. But here's the deal. She donated her winnings to charity, banking on her husband's construction biz which apparently had been running just fine. But his construction company tanked with the economy, and now they've declared bankruptcy.

Another happy George W memory. 57 days and counting.

91. Try reading the news - I"m not sure what all you Republicans are reading, maybe you should do a google search for "2008 Election". As I recall, almost every news organization called it a landslide.

I'll take my news from legitimate news organizations than listening to the rants of crackpot Republicans. I'm guessing you all think the wars are also over as well?

92. Really?? Bush's fault???? Who's been running congress the last 2 years, the start of our decline??? The democrats. Nice try.

94. Geez, can the Republicans whine and cry just a little louder?

You have got to be seriously dumb if you think our decline only started 2 years ago. Nice try.

96. OK Dan, I goggled what you said ( I really did). I found nothing from legitimate news organizations calling it a landslide. Just a few biased blogs and websites, and mostly from the days before the election. If we are talking about how the American People voted, then here are the results from Wikipedia; Obama 67,981,686 McCain 59,082,002. Not a landslide, do the math. The electoral vote is meaningless to discuss because in theory, the population could re-distribute itself randomly, and result in the reversing of who takes office, despite the popular vote.

And Dan, referring to factual information as a rant.........geez, I don't know, Dan..

97. You are correct Mr. Jones, it started long before 2 years ago. Even Bill Clinton said the Democrats blocked reform during his administration. And you could watch the C-Span videos on the hearings over the last few years. But I suspect you won't look any of this up because you don't really want to know. It's called willful ignorance. At least look that up. Nice try, Mr. Jones.

98. She gave money to charity, but isn't paying her debt? That isn't generous. She makes 125,000 a year, lives in a 500,000 home which she intends to keep, her husband hasn't had any earnings this year? Obviously his business didn't just fail, they had creditors after them since last year. But instead of paying her bills, she gave money away. Sounds like GREED. Greed has nothing to do with politics. If people lived within their means, then times like this wouldn't hurt so bad. If you are healthy, you can work. And if you have to work 2 or 3 jobs-even at Mcdonalds to pay your debt, that is the price you pay for spending.

There are so many people out there who will NEVER make 125,000 a year , don't live in 500.000 homes, and who haven't rung up their credit cards who work two and three jobs to pay their bills. Make her sell her house. If she can afford the mortgage, she can move to an apt. and use the money she woukd have paid for her mortgage to pay off her bills.

99. This is Duh, responding to the idiots who, like true republicans, want to blame everyone except the one responsible. The King of Idiots, Bush! As I stated before, the president is responsible for what happens under his administration!! I know you people like to pass the buck when you screw up, which seems to be a reoccuring habit, but it is what it is. Otherwise why elect a president? The defination of republican must be, if everything goes right, we did it, but if not, everyone except for us, did it. It would be funny, if it weren't so damn pathic. You republican's have shown your true colors time and time again. I'm positive that on Jan. 20, you'll all be complaining about the economy, and how its all Obama's fault. On the 21st you'll be saying how Obama should be impeached, for not doing his job. Hell you already blame him, and he hasn't even taken office yet! Rest assured, no one could ever do worse than Bush, even if they tried!!

100. the real problem with the economy, and why it was bound to fail:
Most people spend on CC's as if they make 500K a year. Keeping up the illusion.
Illusion is the key word here.
The reality: Most people make about 40K - if that, after taxes.
The majority of Americans were - are - living a lie. How could this go on for long without dire
consequences?

101. Ok...lets blame Bush that a women decided to give all her winnings to charity. Lets blame Bush that her husbands company went belly up. Do you want to blame Bush for the fact that we have a Dem. Congress, that has a 17% approval rating and they are the ones that make the laws. That is why we have 3 branches of government, so that no one branch is to powerful, and yet you want to blame him for everything. Or did you miss learning that in 8th U.S. History and would like to blame Bush for that as well.

102. TMZ makes one reference to George W., and you people start foaming at the mouth. Some of you don't even comment on the story, you just dive right into politics. When are you going to learn?

103. bingo "The Real Problem"

This is all happening because a lot of Americans, and even the government itself has been leveraging itself with credit and financing from lenders, or in the case of our government, from foreign banks.

Get into too much debt, and everything will collapse at some point, as seems to be the case now.

104.
Please tell me how George Bush has anything whatsoever to do with this family's troubles? I beg you to answer my question in an intelligent fashion. If this woman and her husband were wise, they would have invested and saved their earnings, and gave some not ALL of her prize money to charity. Yes, charity is wonderful, and is so very important. However, saving and preparing for one's future needs to be a priority. I hope Obama does well, I really do. But, I am willing to bet that every little that goes wrong during his tenure will not be blamed on him. Unfortuntely, Liberal whackos are quick to blame W for everything. They blame him for everything, yet refuse to give him any credit for all the good he did. How about 6 years without a terrorist attack? How about the great economy during his first 4 years? How about the success of the Iraq war and the surge? The hypocisy of liberals really cracks me up, it really does. One last thing, please TMZ, if you are going to talk economics, at least have the common courtesy to understand how it works. Thanks! xoxo Conservative Cutie!

105. "As I stated before, the president is responsible for what happens under his administration!! " Too bad none of this started during Bush's administration. Notice how the Dems in charge (who actually have a lower approval rating than he does) don't have a whole hell of a lot to say about this being Bush's doing. That's because they know he didn't do this, they did. I can't say I approve of his support of the bailout but to say "blame Bush" on this one is beyond retarded.
