"5th Grade" Winner Goes Belly Up

Kathy Cox may be smarter than a 5th grader, but she's now just as broke as one.

Kathy won $1 million on "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" in September. But here's the deal. She donated her winnings to charity, banking on her husband's construction biz which apparently had been running just fine. But his construction company tanked with the economy, and now they've declared bankruptcy.

Another happy George W memory. 57 days and counting.

121. it's cool to bash Bush...even for issues unrelated to him. how brave of tmz to take this 'speak truth to power stance'. very risky in today's environment. going out on a limb aren't you? you guys are too hip for me. HIPSTERS, yes, that's you cool guys at TMZ

122. Great logical analysis "cowbulls"!

Unfortunately liberals don't see it that way and it is too late now to try to persuade them...their brains are too washed up. The only thing that I fear and I know it will take place is that once Obama takes office and screws up, the stupid liberals will still blame Bush, because the kool-aid they drank already has poisoned them!

Posted at 9:18PM on Nov 23rd 2008 by I was smart and did not drink the kool-aid

123. This is beyond liberals drinking the kool-aid. Now they're giving each other high-colonics with it.

124. 113. Ok...lets blame Bush that a women decided to give all her winnings to charity. Lets blame Bush that her husbands company went belly up. Do you want to blame Bush for the fact that we have a Dem. Congress, that has a 17% approval rating and they are the ones that make the laws. That is why we have 3 branches of government, so that no one branch is to powerful, and yet you want to blame him for everything. Or did you miss learning that in 8th U.S. History and would like to blame Bush for that as well.

I DOUBT MOST LIBERALS UNDERSTAND 8TH GRADE HISTORY...THEY WERE TOO BUSY DOING DRUGS AND BEING PROMISCUOUS (THEY ARE FAMOUS FOR THAT) it is the reason why they were easily brainwashed during the election

Posted at 9:27PM on Nov 23rd 2008 by smarter than a 5th grader

125. Most 5th graders that I know would have kelp at least 25%... I guess that in the long run she really isn't as smart as a 5th grader.

126. I think it may be interesting to have a requirement that to vote you must pass a history, civics and U.S.Constitution test.

127. And YES it's all Bush's fault that the economy sucks!! Until Jan. 20, 2009 he's still the president. As president HE'S responsible for what happens under his administration, no matter how RETARTED his dumb ass is!!

Bush's fault?

Did it occur to you that the housing market has crashed due to one William Jefferson Clinton, who made it possible for more folks, to more easily obtain a home loan, and get into a home the lenders KNEW wouldn't be able to keep up with? That it was predicted for YEARS, that this crash was going to happen as a result of that. And that W inherited this mess from Slick Willie. Not to mention that the Dems have been running things for years now in Congress and we're no better off. Please, do me a favor and get educated. Don't become star struck by a man who reads good teleprompters. Sure, he's our president-elect, and i'm sure 4 years from now, when nothing is better, he'll continue to lay blame on W. All that while he continues to reap the benefits of the kick backs he made on Freddie and Fannie. Get a clue. Please, I'm just asking you to get better educated before you speak because to those of us who have kept an open mind, and not listened to only ONE side, we're sick of folks like you who base you judgements and opinions more-than-likely-based on whatever CNN is reporting.

128. Another George W memory? Please. You just make yourselves look bad by repeatedly using this argument.

A - the economic crises is a direct result of the housing crisis, which is a direct result of BILL CLINTON's policies. It's called research - even pseudo-journalists should be able to do a teeny-tiny bit of that. And Bush and his staff REPEATEDLY warned that these policies would ruin the housing market in the US, but no one listened. Now that what he said would happen did, it's his fault. Of course. Clearly.

B-everything in the entire universe is not GWB's fault! Yes he is the President. President. Not God. Notice how, when we had a Republican congress, all was well with the country? Dems get that majority and we go to hell in a handbasket...but I guess that's Bush's fault, right?

129. I saw this interview live, and here's the quote posted on Newsbusters.

Bill Clinton on Thursday told ABC's Chris Cuomo that Democrats for years have been "resisting any efforts by Republicans in the Congress or by me when I was President to put some standards and tighten up a little on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac" (video available here, relevant section at 2:45).

You can go to YouTube to see C-Span videos showing angry Barney Frank and friends admonishing Bush and the Republicans that there is nothing wrong with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Clinton has never blamed Republicans or Bush, and it was Clinton who set this in motion early on, building on a Carter program.

130. How IGNORANT to blame our president on this idiot's choices. SHAME ON YOU TMZ. Stop drinking the liberal Kool-Aid and think for yourselves. GEEZE, this just pisses me off!

People need to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for their OWN choices! and actions

It's not Bush's or his administration's fault that this woman was a complete and total IDIOT!

Lordie, it amazes me the stupidity of the liberal Hollywood left.

By the way, TMZ, this is an ENTERTAINMENT GOSSIP site anyway, so don't spew your political preferences on the readers here - we're NOT interested that YOU HATE BUSH! Your job is to provide the public with mindless, useless celebrity gossip, and that's it. Don't flatter yourself by believing that your opinions about Bush or any other political figure are even remotely relevant. They're NOT.

STOP WITH THE POLITICAL BIAS ALREADY and stick with what you know best ... mindless drivel and gossip about idiot celebrities that takes us away from the REAL world for a few seconds. GOT IT???!!!

131. The truth is that the current administration is not the most disastrous in our history.

A. George W. Bush's record on running up debt to burden our children is only the worst since Ronald Reagan.

B. His record on government surveillance of citizens is only the worst since Richard Nixon.

C. His record on foreign-military policy has gotten us into only our worst foreign mess since Lyndon Johnson sank us into Vietnam.

D. His economic record on job creation is only the worst since Herbert Hoover.

E. His record of tax favoritism for the rich is only the worst since Calvin Coolidge. His record of trampling on civil liberties is only the worst since Woodrow Wilson or perhaps John Adams.

There was, however, a presidency that was altogether worse than all or any of these: that of James Buchanan, who warmed the president's chair while the Union disintegrated in his term (1857-61). The Civil War was the most calamitous event in our history, and neither George W. Bush nor any other president besides Buchanan has overseen a calamity on that scale.

Here's why Bush's presidency has been a disaster, although not quite the worst in our history. This president has:

Taken, in the wake of the terrorist attacks three years ago, the greatest worldwide outpouring of goodwill the United States has enjoyed at least since World War II and squandered it by insisting on pursuing a foolish go-it-almost-alone invasion of Iraq, thereby transforming almost universal support for the United States into worldwide condemnation.

Promoted the extraordinarily dangerous doctrine of preemptive war.

Presided over the loss of more than a million American jobs, the worst record since Herbert Hoover.

Misled the American public about weapons of mass destruction and alleged ties to Al-Qaida in Iraq and so led us into a war that has plainly and predictably made us less secure, caused a boom in the recruitment of terrorists, is killing American military personnel needlessly and is threatening to suck up all our available military forces and be a bottomless pit for the money of American taxpayers for years to come.

Failed to follow through in Afghanistan, where the Taliban and Al-Qaida are regrouping, once more increasing the threat to our people.

Insulted and ridiculed other nations and international organizations and then found it necessary to go, hat in hand, to those nations and organizations begging for their assistance.

Inherited an annual federal budget surplus of $230 billion and transformed it into a $400-plus billion deficit in less than three years. This negative turnaround of nearly three-quarters of a trillion dollars is without precedent in our history.

Perhaps worst of all, wrapped himself in the flag and used the horrors of 9/11 to divert the voters' attention from the disasters that his policies have produced.

If there's one thing we can take from Bush It has been that he is all-too-successful in producing catastrophe.

132. FYI: Due to taxes, that woman would've gotten only 45% of the money, so it wouldn't have been that big of a deal. Especially with the crappy economy we have now.

Posted at 6:36AM on Nov 24th 2008 by DeepFreeze3

133. I would love to have a million dollars. She wins it and gives it away?? It would have been smarter to put it in the bank and give the interest to charity every year.

Posted at 7:48AM on Nov 24th 2008 by Sue

134. It doesn't take a lot of thought or knowledge to blame it on Bush. Whoever wrote that should start educating themselves on how the economy works. I'm sure they voted for Obama because he is going to fix everything!!!

Posted at 9:54AM on Nov 24th 2008 by bmd

135. Bush's fault. The way I see it the economy is taking due to lack of confidence in the Lord and Savior Obama. Harvey, are you really as stupid as you make yourself look.
