Vatican to Lennon: We'll Let it Be

The Vatican has finally gotten over that little thing John Lennon said back in 1966 -- that The Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ.

The Vatican newspaper, according to MSNBC, now says the remark "sounds only like a 'boast' by a young working-class Englishman faced with unexpected success, after growing up in the legend of Elvis and rock and roll."

The story in Vatican Daily Osservatore Romano went on to praise The Beatles on the 40th anniversary of The White Album -- apparently they're fine with the Charles Manson theme song "Helter Skelter," "Revolution," and "Why Don't We Do it in the Road."

Ob-la-di, ob-la-da.

31. I am so sick of this. Let it be already! It was totally taken the wrong way. And yet, after all these years it is still taken the wrong way. Amd I guess it will always be taken the wrong way. He didn't mean it that way. It was not a power trip John was on. He was simply saying that people have got to stop treating them as if they are gods. By the time he said this, the fans had become too much to bear. Get it straight folks. And then let it be. Stop trashing John's name.

34. These people have some nerve. They should be asking for OUR forgivness for turning their heads for so long as child after child was molested under their watch. Rediculous that they feel so pompous.

35. OMG...really? Now I can sleep better at night knowing this. And I'm sure Lennon would care too if he were ummm....STILL ALIVE. smfh.

Not sure what this is supposed to do considering the man has been deceased for 20+ years. And this isn't the first time the Vatican has "forgiven" someone decades after their death. And for what? What do they hope to gain?

36. 22. Z ... and don't forget that just about every war in history ...all of the millions of people who have died .... did so in the name of religion! It's the old "MY God is better than YOUR God ...so, I'm going to kill you!" Idiot, gullible people!

Religion is used as nothing more than a scapegoat. Wars are fought over greed and "my d*ck is bigger than yours". If there was not religion, there would simply be another scapegoat.

I'm not sure what you are talking about because for one I am not religious by any means. I was simply stating a fact.

40. TMZ should be ashamed of itself here! The correct quote is "...we're more popular than Jesus right now...". Look back at the time, and he was right. The church had gone down in popularity, and the Beatles were in the midst of Beatlemania. The Beatles were drawing thousands into packed stadiums, when churches had half empty pews. This whole thing got way out of hand, because of the publicity generated when radio stations in the South started having "burn the beatles" rallys. They encouraged people to bring their records to the rallys to burn them in protest of what John Lennon said. The irony is that these same people who burned the records would have given their weeks pay to be able to attend a Beatles concert the very next week.
