Carly Simon Gets Wyclef's Boy Outta Prison

11/25/2008 11:58 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

President Bush just cut a break to convicted drug felon/rapper John Forte, allowing the so-called "Fourth Fugee" to get out of jail early -- and it seems like he has Carly Simon to thank for it.

Forte will walk out of Federal prison next month after serving half of the14-year sentence given to him when authorities found 31 pounds of of coke on him at New Jersey's Newark International Airport in 2000.

But it turns out John met Carly's son Ben through prep school pals -- and we're told she's been lobbying several politicians "religiously" on Forte's behalf, including Senators Ted Kennedy and Orrin Hatch.

Forte was one of only 16 people given clemency by George W. Bush out of more than 2,000 who asked.

Wow. John's a brilliant man who has served over 7 years of an unjust sentence. Obviously, there are facts about his arrest and subsequent trial that have been (understandably) left out of this quick news piece. Suffice it to say, he has more than paid his debt to society. Mandatory minimums are archaic and unjust and have no place in our criminal justice system ---- which is why they have been repealed in most cases. jumping to conclusions and premature judgment without the information needed to form an intelligent opinion is ignorant. c'mon, guys.... don't be ignorant.

Before all Bush hating Obama ass kissing whiners out there complain too much, do a little research.. Every prsident has done this. Bill Clinton pardoned almost 400 prisoners so don't get your Obama lovefest panties wadded up..

Just going to add my voice to the chorus- EVERY LAME DUCK PRESIDENT pardons criminals. Bush has pardoned/granted clemency to less than half the number that Clinton did. You could pick any one of the people on that list or any other president's list and say "ROFL shining example of President ______'s brilliant judgment!"
But you wouldn't, because it's not the act that bothers you, but the person acting. If whatever candidate *you* liked did this, you wouldn't be commenting.

Carly Simon is his "godmother". They have known each other for YEARS--since Ben befriended him in HS. John a lot of time in their home and summers with them. She's the first person he called when he was arrested. She's also the one who put up $250,000 towards his bail. This is like a second son to her.

Furthermore, she believes in his innocence. John is, indeed, a brilliant man who made a horrible mistake. In his quest for fast money, he resorted to selling drugs. He did not bring the drugs back through the airport. Instead, he had two women do it for them. Once they were intercepted, they caved and ratted him out. Through taped conversations, agents had enough evidence to pick him up when he arrived at the airport to get the goods.

I don't think he's the most innocent person alive, but I also don't see him as a hardened criminal who will be a danger to society or anyone else. I believe he's learned from this situation and won't go back to the life.

He had/has SO much going for him.

And, yes, he is indeed GORGEOUS!!!

?!?!?!

Just to inform all of you, Ramos and Compean illegally fired at the suspect after the suspect surrendered and it was apparant to the officers that the suspect was not armed and was not of danger. Furthermore, Ramos and Compean hid evidence and did follow standard reporting procedures. These 2 are not hereos just because they were hired drive up and down a border. This is why we have corrupt police officers and a corrupt justice system. Let them sit a jail a while longer.

There is usually more to every story than meets the eye. John Forte is not a drug dealer. He made a gross mistake on one occasion and got caught. Firstly he did not smuggle the liquid cocaine himself, and (if you believe him) he thought that it was currency that was being smuggled in. He was in a desperate financial situation (which does not of course excuse him from his crime in any way shape or form) and agreed to arrange this one off transaction with a couple of girls, and it was them that got caught. They fingered him so they could get off and he was then set up to take the fall. The actual drug dealer who John Forte was obviously too naive to see through got off scot free, so as usual the real villain of the piece went free. Now the reason Carly Simon was actively trying to help him and others in the same situation was not because she thought he was a drug dealer who needed her help! Of course not..... the reason was that he had received a ludicrously long set term mandatory jail sentence for what (believe it or not) was actually a fairly small crime. If the judge was sentencing him then he would of course still gone to jail, but for a much shorter duration. The absurd mandatory sentences dolled out can be put more in to context when you consider that perpetrators of violent crimes and rape etc can often be out of jail far sooner.
Finally, don't get me wrong. I hate and detest drugs. I know people personally who are affected by them. However you also have to see the fact that sometimes people get caught up in something and then they have to pay the price. John Forte has paid the price.

As for Bush? Can't stand him!

Cheers Russell F
