Celebrity Justice
Dixie Chick Maines Sued for Loud Mouth

Dixie Chick Natalie Maines can't keep her mouth shut about a trio of murders in 1993 -- and now she's being hauled into court for allegedly placing the rap on a guy whose stepson was one of the victims.

The inveterate Bush-basher -- and her bandmates -- has been sued in Arkansas by Terry Hobbs, whose then-8-year-old stepson Steve Branch was killed back in 1993 along with two other boys. But, as reports say, Maines is singled out in court papers.

Hobbs has never been charged or implicated in the murders -- three other men were convicted -- but Maines has been outspoken in her belief Hobbs was involved.

Hobbs says in the suit he's lost income and reputation, and that Maines' claims are "so extreme in degree as to be ... atrocious and utterly intolerable." The band couldn't be reached for comment.

46. Anyone familiar with the West Memphis Three case, go to www.wm3.org, knows the heartbreak this tragedy has caused for everyone involved. Hobbs? Well, you read the evidence and make your own decision. Last I heard, this was an allegedly free country with freedom of speech. Natalie is entitled to her opinions, and as a celebrity, she's entitled to use her status to promote her points of view. Hobbs is also entitlted to sue anyone he wants. She's undoubtedly got enough money to defend herself. She's definitely not the only celebrity who's spoken out against Hobbs in regards to the events that occurred. Hopefully, this will cause more awareness to the situation and somehow support the efforts to have the convictions overturned. It seems obvious Hobbs is just out for money. As if he had any kind of reputation to tarnish? That's just my opinion, sue me.

Gee Jersey Girl why don't we just assign you judge, jury and executioner? We in America have a judicial system that has worked for over 200 years. Do they get it wrong sometimes? of course, but making an assumption based on "reading a little bit" is just plain ignorant. Get educated about the case and get involved to help these young men out instead of trolling the internet gleaning bits of information and then shouting from the rooftop who is guilty.

49.

I hate Natalie Maines as well, but she is right to speak up on this. I think it was last year that Damien Echols was on Larry King Live giving an interview from Death Row. For years I truely belived that he and the other 2 men were guilty of murdering these little boys, not because they wore black clothing, or listened to Metallica, Slayer, etc. I myself listen to metal music. I thought they were guilty because they showed no emotion especially Damien Echols. I know now I was wrong in thinking they were guilty of this horrible crime after seeing Echols interview on Larry King. If I remember correcly I think he said that as long as there are appeals, they cannot set a date for execution. I hope that they will get a new trial and be set free. The focus on who did it shoud be Terry Hobbs. If anyone wants to see the interview you can find it on Youtube.

50. To #19 - thank you! They may have the wrong people in prison, but Ms. Maines should know better. What a tragic case - let's hope that justice is actually served one day.

52. Nataline, this has been a god day for Karma. Let's hope that there's some left for your anti-American liberal ass. What a day it would be to have you and OJ both in jail.

53. Has anyone here even read the news to be aware that the only DNA found in relation to the crime scene and those three little boys was identified to belong to Terry Hobbs and a friend of his--the very same friend who Mr. Hobbs was with on the day in question? The hair identified was found bound up in the knots that tied the little boys hands, and on a tree stump by their bodies.
And do you realize that Mr. Hobbs' ex-wife, the mother of the murdered boy, questions his involvement because she found a pocketknife that her son always carried with him (a treasured gift from his grandfather) in Mr. Hobbs' belongings after the murders--and that she was suspicious enough to send that evidence to attorneys?
If you're going to make an attack on someone's right to opinion based on freedom of speech, at least educate yourself on the subject matter a little. The three people in jail right now for this crime, one sentenced to death, were convicted on FAR LESS evidence than they currently have in relation to Terry Hobbs.

54. Too bad you can't put someone away for being a loud-mouthed idiot. This beyotch is irritating.

55. Kensington-
"The three people in jail right now for this crime, one sentenced to death, were convicted on FAR LESS evidence than they currently have in relation to Terry Hobbs."

What a joke. All three murderers confessed, two of them, Echols and Misskelley, multiple times. YOU need to get your facts straight.

Posted at 3:27PM on Dec 5th 2008 by WM3areGuilty

56. Yes, misskelley confessed. He also has an IQ of about 70, which would make him functionally retarded. He was interrogated for hours under duress and changed his accounting of events countless times. He gave information related to the crimes that was not in any way consistent with the evidence. He gave the wrong time of day it could have happened. The police decided to overlook that. He gave the wrong way in which the crimes could have possibly been committed. Investigators decided to ignore that.
DNA does not link any one of those boys to the crime, but it does implicate a man that one of the boy's own mothers has suspicions about.
Do you know ANY of the details? Do you know, for instance, only weeks befoe the murders one of the mothers called the school with suscipions her son was being sexaually abused by someone close to him?
There are so many unanswetred questions in this case, paired with a completed botched job by investigators who lost or destroyed crucial evidence.
Yet an unstable 16 year old boy broke down under police interrogation, and that's the end of it? Send him to death row? That's exactly why innocent people are put to death for crimes they didn't commit.

57. By the way, when you read about Miskelley's damning confession, did it mention the baseball bat that police interrogators had in the room in plain view with them?

Posted at 4:18PM on Dec 5th 2008 by Kensington

58. You completely gloss over the fact that the other two confessed as well, without "police coercion". Echols confessed to VanVickles and Medford, William Jones, and Jesse Hurst, while Baldwin confessed to Mike Carson on two different occasions.

And I don't think there was a baseball bat present at any of these confessions...well, maybe for the softball girls.

Do I know ANY of the details? Yes, I think it's fair to say I could read you this case backwards and forwards and around in circles. Where you, on the other hand, just seem to spew the same old propaganda.

Posted at 4:29PM on Dec 5th 2008 by WM3areGuilty

59. I'm not glossing over anything. Echols was no angel to be sure. He was an extremely troubled teenager who had brushes with the law and suicidal tendancies. He was the weirdo and the outsider in town. And he was a kid who was mystifyingly stupid enough to get off on the attention when fingers were pointing his way at the time. He did confess. You are absolutely correct. He said he did it.
I've been involved in enough criminal cases were some idiot actually gets off on claiming they were the one who did it--especially some punk teenager. He fit the perfect profile of some dumb kid who would want that kind of attention.
This case has always broken my heart, but what kills me the most is the backwards way in which it was investigated and how they were tried. Maybe Echols did it, and his confession at the time is 100% accurate. But there are too many other factors going on here, and too many closer to the case who should have been under suspicion. From some weirdo stumbling into a restaurant a mile away covered in blood and mud that same night (whoops--police lost that evidence, by the way) to two stepfathers who both initially withheld information and had a history of abuse...and now DNA evidence pointing to one of them?
Sorry, but I will never believe that justice was served in this case or that we know the real story.

60. And there was a baseball bat in the interrogation room when they were talking to Misskelley. Sorry to ruin your joke potential. I know this is a laugh outloud funny subject.
