William Balfour -- Troubled Youth

By the looks of WIlliam Balfour's troubled youth -- and his even more troubled family history -- he could be the poster boy for "a product of his environment."

Balfour -- who's been charged with the Hudson triple-murders -- was arrested by the time he was 14-years-old for possession of heroin and possession of a stolen vehicle, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The paper also says Balfour's father went to prison for murder, his grandmother was incarcerated in 1969 for manslaughter and his brother also has a lengthy record.

AJC also says William's mother was abusive, and in 1993 the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services found evidence she was abusing her sons -- including an incident in which she tied up Will's older brother, stuck a sock in his mouth and beat him senseless.

Not that any of this justifies what Balfour may or may not have done -- but it is interesting to see the circumstances that led to his present situation.

17. So many people have had terrible crappy childhoods. I spent most of my teen years in the foster care system due to abuse. I also had a lengthy juvenile record as a teen. But, I grew up and had kids of my own and have no adult criminal record. I don't blame all of my problems on the fact I was abused, rather I believe I learned alot even though the situaton was terrible. I chose not to be stuck protraying myself as a victim a long time ago. I do not blame what I say or do on being abused. I am an adult now and take full responsibility for my actions, and never ever use being abused as a scape goat. I fully believe what happened to me made me a stronger more loving person and maybe even a better mother. I fully believe you can come out in life well if you look at it that way. So bottom line IMO- any trauma in his childhood is a poor excuse for what he did. Hopefully he will have a long time to reflect on that for taking the innocent lives he did that day. I send condolence to the family of the victims, and wish them well.

23. There is no excuse for murder. Yet, hearing his story is incredibly sad. Many children, especially in the African American comunity are abused to an extreme. I have witnessed many incidents where they are beaten for being tired, not walking fast enough, needing to use the restroom and the list goes on........ I know that the way you are raised affects who or what you become as an adult, in many cases. I am also a strong believer of Karma and every single person that was involved in a this tragic crime..... from the mother that beat the child to the man that shot the gun will get whats coming to them.

25. I decided when I was 9 yrs old that I would never let ''them" win. You can choose to be a victim or a survivor. Balfour had a choice. He made bad ones.

26. Dude is getting the death penalty for sure. I'm sure after he thinks about it even he will agree it is for the best. Here is a good example of why low life wenches need to stop abusing their children! Child abuse most often from rageful mothers is very common in this community and no one thinks too much of it, it is tolerated, even respected at times. Well go ahead you freak show moms, just continuing beating the crap out of your helpless children, while your at it why don't you bring home murderous felons for your sons to pal around with, yea that's a really great idea, What could possibly go wrong there? This story is beyond disgusting to me. All this tragedy is self inflicted. Grow the F--- up already and join the rest of us in the civilized world and please stop victimizing your children because no one is safe from them after they grow up. Can this not be a wake up. Are you capable of learning? I mean really!
