32. Good Post Cage Fighter. One other reason for this particular injury: Cory Hill is 6-4 and 155 lbs at weigh-in!!! In order to keep that kind of low body weight (along with the temporary but sever dehydration) he has to have extremely low body fat (under 3%) and even low muscle weight particularly in the legs. Add to that a diet required to maintain this low level of muscle and fat weight, which he is at least 25% below what is normal for a 6-4 trained athlete (about 210+), WILL deplete bone mass. So no cushion (low fat) weak support (low muscle) and light structure (low bone mass) can equal this kind of result.

33. Well said Thor. There is more to this sport than people punching and kicking each other. And, if you check the history,it's MUCH safer than boxing or any other contact sport. Plus, fighters have longer careers than your typical contact sport.

Neither one of these fighters knew what happened until after the fight was stopped. So people please..don't start throwing out the barbarism comments until you know the whole deal.

34. 27 years ago my sister had a similiar injury and I've never forgotten it. I was the first one to get to her and even though no skin was broken, I could tell her ankle was no longer attached to the rest of her leg. Images like that never leave you.

Best of luck on his recovery. Ouch!

35. I was looking forward to seeing the Cory Hill fight and was disappointed it was not televised. I wanted to see how Hartt dealt with the reach disparity and if Hill was going to show signs of being physically weak at this weight. I hope he recovers soon and rethinks his weight class!

36. It's one thing to drop down in weight to 'attempt' to be dominating...but it's another thing to abuse your body and rob your power to do it.

37. If that is the worst thing some of you have seen then I have a little advice, its called life, try it some time. Live it. Leave your block and your work home work home work home cycle.

38. Thorshammer, I'd like to see him come back at a higher weight. Hill is almost as tall as Alistair Overeem.

43. Cory is a fantastic fighter and it really is a terrible blow to his career.

To all these people commenting on the 'brutality' of this event that this sport is 'disgusting' please leave those ignorant comments out. The sport is mixed martial arts, and it is wonderfully complex and invigorating, with some of the most talented and cerebral athletes in the world today. People break bones in basketball, soccer, hockey, boxing any sport. Accidents happen. MMA has a phenomenal track record with this being the most serious injury ever sustained in a sanctioned event. Cory in fact needs to rethink his weight class, although he has an amazing reach and height advantage at 185, obviously this risk is apparent, you need the muscle mass, fatty acids, and weight around your bones to give them strength and nurishment and clearly he is not getting it at 155. 185 would be a much healthier weight and I doubt this would happen to him again.

And people saying his opponent Hartt acting savagely? Ridiculous, neither fighter knew that his leg was injured, cory was in fact STILL fighting from the bottom. The ref QUICKLY intervened and stopped the fight. When Dale Hartt realized cory was injured he actually stayed by his side while Hill was taken out of the arena.

44. I was there last night when the fight too place. It was absolutely sick. About 15-20 minutes later they showed the replay on the big screen and collectively 10k people stood and and "ohhhhhhhhhhh Daayyyuuummm."

45. This is exactly why you should never kick the shins, unless you have shin guards or are a Muay Thai fighter. Even in sparring kicking shins can be painful and that is technique placement, I have had my shins bruised for months when I started training. Example, my trainer has shins like concrete, he tapped me with his shin, I blocked it and he got my knee which was the worst pain I have ever been in--in my life. Imagine a stainless steel baseball bat for a Muay Thai fighter shin. MMA is a combination of different disciplines.
