46. I am embarrassed by all comments here today. I have seen many people in my lifetime with a cold sore or fever blister and they are actually very common. It is very dim-witted and ignorant to read the comments I see regarding the people who get these. Anyone can have a cold sore and not just a slut, etc. Judgemental people make me sick.

47. JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE IT DOESN'T MEAN IT ISN'T AN STD - IT IS !!!!!!!!!! Google It...

Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).

Genital herpes infection is very common and on the increase in the United States. Nationwide 45 million people aged 12 and older (1 out of 5 of the total adolescent and adult population) are infected with HSV-2.

It is more common in women (1 out of 4) than in men (1 out of 5) possibly because male to female transmission is more efficient than female to male transmission.

HSV-2 infection is also more common in areas of high socio-economic disadvantage, facing fundamental issues of health such as:

The Herpes Virus

HSV-type 1

causes fever blisters on the mouth or face (oral herpes)

HSV-type 2

typically affects the genital area (genital herpes)

Both viral types can:

be inactive or 'silent' causing no symptoms

cause either genital or oral infections

cause 'outbreaks' of blisters and ulcers

People can remain infected for life after the first initial episode

48. Is this really the best you TMZ people can do?
Yeah, I suppose none of you have ever had a cold sore before.
I've seen many of your reporters on your tv show, and even with a sore on her lip Nicole still looks better than any of you losers...

49. Judgemental people make me sick. Anyone can have a cold sore. And yes they are contagious but who are you to judge other people and call them sluts, etc.

50. Mandy you are a real a$$hole. A 2 year old child does not get herpes as an STD. It is a virus.

52. from kidshealth.org
"What Causes a Cold Sore?
HSV-1 is very common — if you have it, chances are you picked it up when you were a kid. Most people who are infected with the herpes simplex virus got it during their preschool years, most likely from close contact with someone who has it or getting kissed by an adult with the virus.

Although a person who has HSV-1 doesn't always have sores, the virus stays in the body and there's no permanent cure.

When someone gets infected with HSV-1, the virus makes its way through the skin and into a group of nerve cells called a ganglion (pronounced: gang-glee-in). The virus moves in here, takes a long snooze, and every now and then decides to wake up and cause a cold sore. But not everyone who gets the herpes simplex virus develops cold sores. In some people, the virus stays dormant (asleep) permanently.

What causes the virus to "wake up" or reactivate? The truth is, no one knows for sure. A person doesn't necessarily have to have a cold to get a cold sore — they can be brought on by other infections, fever, stress, sunlight, cold weather, hormone changes in menstruation or pregnancy, tooth extractions, and certain foods and drugs. In a lot of people, the cause is unpredictable."

53. HIV is a Virus too? Want to school me on STDS? My parents informed me about all of this so I was a proper young lady and so my children wouldn't have to deal with these types of things. So really... it's not an STD if a 2 year old has it? YES it is, because the only reason the 2 year old has it is because, the mother/father have it or someone close to them had it and infected them, and passed it through bodily fluids, so in fact the STD was passed to the child, even though not the childs fault now because the parents had it so does the child. Sexually Transmitted... regardless the age of who has it.

Just like HIV is an STD regardless if you get it from sex, childbirth or drug use! STDS Come from a slut (man or woman) one way or another doesn't make the person who has it a slut, but thats where and how its spread uninformed uneducated people who think nothing of it.

Go Kiss someone with a cold sore if its " Not a big deal "

54. Why is this news? And for the record yes cold sores are considered the herpes virus but it's not the same one as you get from screwing around. So get educated before you start typing.

55. MANDY.

I believe SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED means SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED. Therefore, through sexual activities! How in the world is a 2 year old suppose to get a STD if they didn't have sexual activities. There is a reason for these terms. Please use them correctly.

And as for HIV. You could can that if you have a cut and someone with HIV's blood gets into your bloodstream, causing you to have HIV. Therefore, NOT SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED. Tell me where is the sexual intercourse or transmission in this?

You are ridiculous.

AND FYI. A STD which means Sexually Transmitted Disease is an illness that is spread through sexual contact.

If you were educated about these things...this is sad because you were educated incorrectly. It's okay. It happens to the best of us.

56. this is the shiit that just feeds the stigma of herpes.

ferraripryncess..when's the last time you got an STD test? next time you go in, ASK them to test you for HSV and HPV.
when you go in to get an STD test, HSV isn't normally tested since so many of the population has the virus (yes, virus NOT disease). you might be surprised by your results you fugly bitch.

57. Whether you consider cold sores STD's or just a virus makes no difference to me. I used to get them all the time starting when I was a child. Anything would bring them on...a cold, a fever, a stomach ache, the cold weather, the sun, stress, just about anything. At times they were so bad I could barely open my mourth.

Then about 25 years ago a friend told me she had seen a naturalist doctor on tv who talked about how to prevent cold sores . He said a daily dose of Lecithin, which is a vitamin/mineral type supplement, would not cure herpes simplex but would keep the virus dorment thereby preventing outbreaks.. I can honestly say since I have been taking Lecithin daily for about 25 years , I have had maybe 3 or 4 cold sores . They popped up only when I ran out of Lecithin and forgot to buy more for several days.. Even then they were very small and went away when I started taking it again.

No I don't sell it or get any kind of kick back from the sale of it. You can buy Lecithin at any drugstore or wherever vitamins and minerals are sold. I am just so gratefull my friend was watching tv that day. It has saved me a lot of pain, agony and embarresement..

58. Heide-
Simple question - How did the person who gave the virus to the child or unsuspecting person most likely get it? Regardless of what you say, it stems from Sexual Activity somewhere down the line, thats why it is considered an STD regardless of how you contracted the "virus" They don't call HIV - DTD ( Drugs Transmitted Disease ) or ACD ( Accidentally Transimitted Disease) for a reason, its a sad chain of events that stems from loose legs. Ask any doctor, it is still considered an STD no matter how you got it, not only because of how it came to play, but also because you can spread it to genitals and your partner sexually, even if you didn't get it that way. Stop defending it because you have it.

" STD Illness spread through sexual contact " - Exactly...... it can be spread through sexual contact, leaving it to be... an STD. Suprise!

59. Clearly, this Mandy person has little to do with his/her life than start flame wars over a virus that he/she probably has. Statistics aren't on her side, and karma is funny that way. She may never get a cold sore, but I look forward to the day when she gets a nasty case of shingles from the dormant herpes zoster (chicken pox) virus in her body.

"Mandy" is undoubtedly either a 15-year-old bored teenager, or a 45-year-old fat guy living in mom's basement. Under no circumstance is this mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging extremist an educated or enlightened person. Being able to read a Wikipedia entry does not qualify one as "educated."
