Shark Commits Suicide on Waterslide

There's nothing quite like taking a cool trip down the water slide at the Atlantis Resort in The Bahamas, plunging into the refreshing pool at the end, and ... HOLY CRAP!! THAT'S A SHARK!

But it was all too real when hotel staff saw that one of the sharks from the famous resort aquarium had somehow jumped out of its tank and onto a nearby water slide -- where it managed to slide down into the pool.

It all went down before the pool opened Tuesday -- so nobody was in the water -- but here's where it gets tragic: A rep for the Atlantis tells TMZ the shark died a short time after swimming in the chlorinated water. Here's the heartbreaking statement:

"Yesterday morning at around 9:30 AM, prior to the resort's waterscape opening to guests, a 12+-year-old female reef shark jumped over an 18 inch wide and 1 foot high sustaining structure into the resort's Leap of Faith water slide.

The Atlantis Aquarists believe the shark was startled by an unusual circumstance that we have no way of defining completely. In the over ten years guests have experienced the Leap of Faith, the reef shark itself, harmless to humans as it is fed regularly by our staff, had shown no previous incidences of leaping out of the water in the marine habitat ...

... The habitat itself is part of the resort's open system which filters water from the Atlantic Ocean and is completely separated from the chlorinated water system on the slides. Once the shark fell onto the slide and into the chlorinated water, it was in significant distress.

The Marine Aquarium Operations team responded immediately and was able to retrieve the animal at the bottom of the slide and return the animal to the main marine habitat in an attempt to resuscitate her. Despite the team's best efforts to recover the animal, it died shortly after the occurrence.

There was no danger to our guests or staff, both of whom interact with these sharks daily in our various interactive programs (we have guests enter the shark habitat to swim and interact with the sharks in bathing attire only).

In fact, our concern was for the animal itself who defied nature to take this leap. The entire team at Atlantis is truly saddened by the loss of this animal who had resided in the Atlantis marine habitat for over ten years."

31. I've been on that slide I would have peed my pants if there was a shark in the pool when I got to the bottom. I feel bad for the shark, why I don't know I hate sharks, but it probably died pretty awful, like suffocating has chlorine was not meant for sharks. They were talking about this on the radio and saying comparing it to Shamu, these animals are ocean animals and are not meant for pools. While it was neat to see the sharks at Atlantis on the two slides (one a tube ride and the big slide), you don't enjoy them as the big slide you see nothing on the way down, it goes to fast and the tube ride, the sharks just swim around the pool sometimes coming close to the tube around you but really not worth it. I would have been happy with a pretty tropical scene.

34. There is some resorts use salt water for swimming and all that fun water stuff. I think it is more eco-friendly.

35. How in the hell did #3 make this story a bad indictment on Barack Obama? This country is in trouble, if you can turn this story into an anti-Obama commercial. Amazing!

36. And also - Atlantis has many salt water swimming pools as well as chlorinated, which I'm assuming the salt water pools also have a level of chlorination as would any public water swimming area, salt or not!

37. Ingy, you are extremely insensitive! Perhaps if it somehow affected your life, you may feel different, but I doubt it! Stay out of the human population!

38. maybe that shark was married and lost his wife and he wanted to go and be with her and he knew for certain that the pool water would get him where he wanted to go but wanted to have a little fun going down that slide first! maybe he had been plotting this for years so don't be sad people....its what he wanted!!! seriously....why don't you try being more concerned for our soldiers fighting for our freedom rather than this shark that jumped water!

41. This would have been a better story if it happend while the pool was full of tourists.

42. Yeah! Full of tourists would have made it really interesting!

43. Okay, so yeah, this is a pretty stupid story. Poor shark... sucky way to die, but what can you do? Life goes on. And for everyone who's complaining about how we shouldn't care about this shark and start caring about our country and our troops, I got news for you - I care about my country and about every single soldier overseas. I care about them immensely. Just because I feel bad for a shark does not mean I can't feel compassion for anything else. When I come on TMZ, I don't expect to read news reports about the war, Obama, gas prices, what have you. I come on here to read mindless stories about the idiots that inhabit Hollywood. If I want to read about serious stuff, I pick up a newspaper or head on over to cnn.com or something.

44. The shark committed suicide because it heard that Macky's back in town.

45. #2 at least someone here has a brain and doesn't listen to the crap spewed by the media....It's a shark. Tragic? Yes. News Worthy? Maybe. Something to get excited about? not really. And for all you PETA people how come you have a problem with it jumping down a slide but not being contained in an aquarium. Wild creatures are meant to be in the wild in an exhibit for tourists in the Bahamas. By the way don't really care if they are on exhibit just playing devils advocate.
