Shark Commits Suicide on Waterslide

There's nothing quite like taking a cool trip down the water slide at the Atlantis Resort in The Bahamas, plunging into the refreshing pool at the end, and ... HOLY CRAP!! THAT'S A SHARK!

But it was all too real when hotel staff saw that one of the sharks from the famous resort aquarium had somehow jumped out of its tank and onto a nearby water slide -- where it managed to slide down into the pool.

It all went down before the pool opened Tuesday -- so nobody was in the water -- but here's where it gets tragic: A rep for the Atlantis tells TMZ the shark died a short time after swimming in the chlorinated water. Here's the heartbreaking statement:

"Yesterday morning at around 9:30 AM, prior to the resort's waterscape opening to guests, a 12+-year-old female reef shark jumped over an 18 inch wide and 1 foot high sustaining structure into the resort's Leap of Faith water slide.

The Atlantis Aquarists believe the shark was startled by an unusual circumstance that we have no way of defining completely. In the over ten years guests have experienced the Leap of Faith, the reef shark itself, harmless to humans as it is fed regularly by our staff, had shown no previous incidences of leaping out of the water in the marine habitat ...

... The habitat itself is part of the resort's open system which filters water from the Atlantic Ocean and is completely separated from the chlorinated water system on the slides. Once the shark fell onto the slide and into the chlorinated water, it was in significant distress.

The Marine Aquarium Operations team responded immediately and was able to retrieve the animal at the bottom of the slide and return the animal to the main marine habitat in an attempt to resuscitate her. Despite the team's best efforts to recover the animal, it died shortly after the occurrence.

There was no danger to our guests or staff, both of whom interact with these sharks daily in our various interactive programs (we have guests enter the shark habitat to swim and interact with the sharks in bathing attire only).

In fact, our concern was for the animal itself who defied nature to take this leap. The entire team at Atlantis is truly saddened by the loss of this animal who had resided in the Atlantis marine habitat for over ten years."

49. Pretty elaborate slide, and what I find strange is this "retaining" wall, it looks like a street curb. I guess they didn't know fish could jump out of their water. Oh well, and I like how they stressed the fact that these sharks aren't dangerous, as they're "hand fed" by the staff. Well ya know what, Pitbulls are owned and cared for by humans, and they STILL bite people, and tear them to shreds. These are wild animals people, why you think it's safe to have them so close to where people (adults AND children) go flying down into a pool of water is beyond me. It may look pretty, but not everything that's pretty is a good idea. Maybe now you'll rethink your architecture and build a REAL tank for these animals to live in, or better yet, leave them in the f*cking ocean where they belong.

55. This is EXACTLY why sharks should be taken in like this. There are too many dangers imposed on them while in captivity... Just SAD!!!

56. It is just a shark. Thousands of dogs, cats, squirrels, chipmunks, racoons, deer, moose, and birds are killed every day. Why would you put a story about a shark up? Is this shark a D-list celebrity? Does it have a sex tape? Does it belong to Heidi or Spencer or Paris or Britney? NO! Why do you people care so much? I am not glad that the shark died. I'm not happy about it, but really who cares? It is just an animal, it is not a human, so what gives? Heck I bet there were a few humans who died yesterday while on vacation from drowning, why aren't there stories up here? I rarely comment on these sites, because honestly, who cares what you say. But this is just ridiculous. No one here would of cared that a shark had died if tmz hadn't put it up on its site. Get real people.

57. All my prayers and wishes are with the "TMZ" staff for the loss of your boss and mentor; Mr. Levin. To die so tragically while on vacation. Was Shark his cute office nickname? My condolences.

58. WOW HOW SAD, I HATE THAT IT DIED, BUT I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO SEE IT JUMP. ID LOVE TO GO TO SOUTH AFRICA AND SEE THE GREAT WHITES JUMP OUT OF WATER AND TURN FLIPS , HOW COOL WOULD THAT BE. NUMBER TWO, GOSH MAN OR WOMAN TAKE A PILL , ANIMALS STILL HAVE RIGHTS TOO , TO SAY YOUR GOING TO KICK A DOG, HOW MEAN AND SELFISH OF YOU. I WILL PRAY FOR YOU, YOU NEED IT. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE,. AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.

59. Chrisa, LOVED the sushi-slide! How clever! As for the shark, be it an animal or not, I still feel bad about it. Can you imagine flipping through the air, landing on a hard surface, and sliding fast paced into a pool of death...especially for an animal that has no clue what's going on? Scary! But, $hit happens. Such is life.

60. that shark was watchin all those people havin so much fun on the slide that he just had to try it!! Oh well im sure it was worth it. Even though my only fear is of SHARKS, I don't think its cool to put these animals that are suppose to have the entire ocean at their fin tips in small tanks. NOT COOL!!!
