Shark Commits Suicide on Waterslide

There's nothing quite like taking a cool trip down the water slide at the Atlantis Resort in The Bahamas, plunging into the refreshing pool at the end, and ... HOLY CRAP!! THAT'S A SHARK!

But it was all too real when hotel staff saw that one of the sharks from the famous resort aquarium had somehow jumped out of its tank and onto a nearby water slide -- where it managed to slide down into the pool.

It all went down before the pool opened Tuesday -- so nobody was in the water -- but here's where it gets tragic: A rep for the Atlantis tells TMZ the shark died a short time after swimming in the chlorinated water. Here's the heartbreaking statement:

"Yesterday morning at around 9:30 AM, prior to the resort's waterscape opening to guests, a 12+-year-old female reef shark jumped over an 18 inch wide and 1 foot high sustaining structure into the resort's Leap of Faith water slide.

The Atlantis Aquarists believe the shark was startled by an unusual circumstance that we have no way of defining completely. In the over ten years guests have experienced the Leap of Faith, the reef shark itself, harmless to humans as it is fed regularly by our staff, had shown no previous incidences of leaping out of the water in the marine habitat ...

... The habitat itself is part of the resort's open system which filters water from the Atlantic Ocean and is completely separated from the chlorinated water system on the slides. Once the shark fell onto the slide and into the chlorinated water, it was in significant distress.

The Marine Aquarium Operations team responded immediately and was able to retrieve the animal at the bottom of the slide and return the animal to the main marine habitat in an attempt to resuscitate her. Despite the team's best efforts to recover the animal, it died shortly after the occurrence.

There was no danger to our guests or staff, both of whom interact with these sharks daily in our various interactive programs (we have guests enter the shark habitat to swim and interact with the sharks in bathing attire only).

In fact, our concern was for the animal itself who defied nature to take this leap. The entire team at Atlantis is truly saddened by the loss of this animal who had resided in the Atlantis marine habitat for over ten years."

61. Thats crazy what the shark did.. Poor thing :(

BTW some of you people are really depressed and emotionally lacking. I would roast you fools but I dont want to make you feel even worse about yourselves. There are reasons why you dont care when an animal or person is suffering or dies, so I guess I cant get to heated because how else can you people react. You dont know any better!

63. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE??? DID YOUR PARENTS NOT RAISE YOU THE RIGHT WAY??? HAVE SOME COMPASSION! WHETHER IT'S A HUMAN OR AN ANIMAL THAT DIED, WE SHOULD ALL HAVE SOME RESPECT TOWARDS THEM!! DON'T YOU THINK?! IF YOU WERE RAISED WITH HAVING NO COMPASSION, THEN YOU SHOULDN'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT THIS ARTICLE! BUT JUST REMEMBER WHAT COMES AROUND GOES AROUND! KARMA IS A BITCH! AND IF THAT RESORT WAS SMART ENOUGH, THEY SHOULD PLACE A HIGHER WALL, OTHERWISE SOMEONE WILL GET HURT IF ANOTHER SHARK HAPPENS TO JUMP OUT AGAIN. YOU WOULD THINK PEOPLE WOULD HAVE A BRAIN IF IT HAPPENED ONCE, INSTEAD OF JUST BLOWING IT OFF.

65. "Survival of the fittest, people."

Incorrect. Survival of the fittest actually refers to the creature that produces the most offspring. For example, an animal that lived for only three years but had five offspring would be "fitter" than an animal that lived ten years but only had two babies. The popular misconception that survival of the fittest somehow refers to the strongest creature is false. Of course, a stronger, fasster creature has more of a chance to survive long enough to reproduce many times, but it's not a done deal.

As this article makes no mention of how many (if any) offspring the shark reproduced, your statement is irrevelant.

And it's sad that the shark died this way. Compassion shouldn't be limited by current events.

66. Why are the comments here so extreme? Let's all hate animals or lets all join Peta? WTF? What does Peta have to do with anything? Just because Peta is made up of idiots (idiots who KILL animals - see www.petakillsanimals.com ), doesn't mean anti-peta people should hate animals. What did the animals do to you to deserve hate and abuse? The animal life on this planet far outnumbers the human life - show some respect. And I can't help but laugh at people who come to TMZ - a PAPARAZZI/TABLOID website to complain about the economy. Seriously, did you idiots expect to find serious news stories here?

67. I disagree with AS. Herbert Spencer coined the term "survival of the fittest" to denote the heritable characteristics that increase or decrease the chances of survival and reproduction. The characteristics that improve survival and reproduction will increase in frequency over generations.

It's not about the quantity of offspring.

72.
I say we feed INGY to the sharks. That was the stupidest account on animal rights that I have seen on here. He could have shown more grace and persuasion by, say, LAYING OFF THE CAPLOCKS.

Anyway, this is a tragic situation. I hate theme parks. Ugly obese Americans wherever you go.

73. The shark was very likely about to die before jumping out of the tank in the first place. It was in pain and wanted to "escape" the pain. Its instinct was to flee the danger, so it jumped out of the water. So, in a way, the fish actually did commit suicide rather than face a painful demise.

BS MARB Texas A&M Galveston

On a side note, the story is in no way related to the economy, politics, or religion.

74. I agree with #13. Poor shark ! we shouldn't take these species out of their natural habitat.

75. I think #2 is an inconciderate jerk who should be kicked because THEY are the moron! Who cares if it was just a shark? It was still a living being.
