Shark Commits Suicide on Waterslide

There's nothing quite like taking a cool trip down the water slide at the Atlantis Resort in The Bahamas, plunging into the refreshing pool at the end, and ... HOLY CRAP!! THAT'S A SHARK!

But it was all too real when hotel staff saw that one of the sharks from the famous resort aquarium had somehow jumped out of its tank and onto a nearby water slide -- where it managed to slide down into the pool.

It all went down before the pool opened Tuesday -- so nobody was in the water -- but here's where it gets tragic: A rep for the Atlantis tells TMZ the shark died a short time after swimming in the chlorinated water. Here's the heartbreaking statement:

"Yesterday morning at around 9:30 AM, prior to the resort's waterscape opening to guests, a 12+-year-old female reef shark jumped over an 18 inch wide and 1 foot high sustaining structure into the resort's Leap of Faith water slide.

The Atlantis Aquarists believe the shark was startled by an unusual circumstance that we have no way of defining completely. In the over ten years guests have experienced the Leap of Faith, the reef shark itself, harmless to humans as it is fed regularly by our staff, had shown no previous incidences of leaping out of the water in the marine habitat ...

... The habitat itself is part of the resort's open system which filters water from the Atlantic Ocean and is completely separated from the chlorinated water system on the slides. Once the shark fell onto the slide and into the chlorinated water, it was in significant distress.

The Marine Aquarium Operations team responded immediately and was able to retrieve the animal at the bottom of the slide and return the animal to the main marine habitat in an attempt to resuscitate her. Despite the team's best efforts to recover the animal, it died shortly after the occurrence.

There was no danger to our guests or staff, both of whom interact with these sharks daily in our various interactive programs (we have guests enter the shark habitat to swim and interact with the sharks in bathing attire only).

In fact, our concern was for the animal itself who defied nature to take this leap. The entire team at Atlantis is truly saddened by the loss of this animal who had resided in the Atlantis marine habitat for over ten years."

106. THANK YOU, #15!!! Preaching about a recession on TMZ.com... GIVE ME A BREAK! Let's all harp over this God-Awful, never ending recession.... there should be no other news in the world except for the recession... It really is the end of the world. All we should think about and talk about is this awful economy and our savior, Obama.
Economies go up and down. Yes, it's bad. No, you shouldn't be on TMZ whining about a recession. there ARE other stories in the world... get off here if you don't want to read about it. Animals are part of this world that you obviously care so much about.

Visited your hotel earlier this year! It was GORGEOUS!!! We LOVED your little island paradise and Chub Cay also! You are blessed to live in such a great place.....but about the news, I can only imagine TMZ was snooping on the supposed new headstone on the SMITH family graves? Haven't found that story on here yet, I read that on another blog.

110. 2, Moronic would be believing because there's a recession that no one should care about animals.

Forunately for animals not to mentio nthe human race not all humans are self aborbed and selfish like you. If they where, it would be a very sad world we live in.

113. To post#105 (by msroncon): Right on.
To post#109 (by microbe): The shark was in real pain, and obviously danger, after landing in clorinated water. Dieing in her own tank would've been must less painful. At least then she would've been able to breath "painlessly".
Poor, innocent being, having to suffer like that. All due to man.

114. It is not the fault of animals that our economy stinks. It is a lot of things but all the result of PEOPLE and their choices (Greed, stupidity?) Do you want to take your anger out on an animal? Sounds cowardly and immature. Try writing an intelligent letter to PETA if they annoy you so much. That is if you have an intelligent thing to say.

117. I wish that somehow we could use the national stimulus funds and develop a shark psychotherapy program. All of these animals are clearly in distress due to global warming and the economic situation, and it is only a matter of time before this epidemic moves to the ocean itself. This will affect commercial fishing and gas prices on a national level! Everyone please pray for these sharks! As the most sensitive animals of the sea, obviously they are feeling our global pain and screaming out for change. It's the same thing as suicide bombing, only it's shark jumping. What a horrible way to die. LMFAO!!!! Muwahahahahahahaha!

118. I think "the story" isnt that a shark died...as someone stated animals including humans die everyday...Perhaps the fact that it jumped from its containment area, onto a waterslide built for humans, then slid into the humans' pool was the story....yes animals die evryday....people die everyday....but come on...how often does a shark slide down the waterslide into a pool used by people.....its actually an interesting story....imagine wading in the pool, enjoying your vacation, then you look up to see a shark ripping it down the waterslide into the pool you are currently standing in....THAT doesnt happen everyday... and to the guy who said if #2 came to their neighborhood they'd release theirs dogs on them and that PETA rocks....keep in mind that if PETA had it their way,you wouldnt be allowed to own any dogs to release...PETA manifest states that even domesticated animals such as dogs and cats shouldnt be unlawful to own...No animals at all...Peta doesnt believe in pets...actually stated they were better off dead than live as a pet....Read PETA's fine print before you say they rock

120. For all of you who are ranting about how the shark isnt important. It is a much deeper dynamic that you are not understanding. You will never understand. Someday, right before you take your last breath. Kiss your money. Kiss your materials. Its all you will have, because you have not been enriched by life.
