"Sopranos" Actor Beats Murder Rap

Lillo Brancato, who played Matt Bevilaqua on "The Sopranos," was acquitted of second degree murder today in the 2005 shooting of an off-duty police officer.

Brancato was convicted on a lesser charge of attempted burglary. He faces a minimum of three years -- but since he's been in jail for nearly that long already, he could get credit for time served.

Brancato's accomplice, Steven Armento, was convicted earlier this year of first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

31. The NY Post has an interview with 2 jurors that said this:
Still, two jurors interviewed by The Post, Arnaldo Nuñez, 44, and a 50-year-old widower who asked that his name not be published, said the main reason he was not convicted of murder was sloppy police work.

The evidence police developed did not conclusively prove Brancato knew his junkie pal Steven Armento, 52, was carrying the .357 Magnum that killed Enchautegui.

"A lot of the police investigation was simply sloppy. It was sloppy police work," the widower said.

Both men said they could not believe that two teams of four detectives did not take notes when they interviewed Brancato in the hospital.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family!

33. a lot of sensitive cops on here today......cologino didn't kill anyone, therefore he got off. no one wanted a cop to die in vain, but the guy that did it is in jail. everyone moves on.

34. Your name speaks for itself, eat poo. Next time some crackhead junkie breaks into your home and holds you and your family hostage, don't call the cops. If that time comes, remember that we cops are all corrupt. The fact is, you would be hitting 911 so hard on your phone your hand would bleed. You would be praying some "corrupt" cop like me would be willing to enter your home and kill the SOB harming your family. Like in any profession, you have your good ones and you have your bad ones. Unfortunately, the bad ones get all the press. You don't hear of the guy that rescued a family in a hostage crisis. So to you, eat poo, f--- you. To the rest of you, Merry Christmas, and be safe this holiday season.

35. See the funny thing about drugs is they make you desperate and desperate people do desperate things so whether or not he pulled the trigger he was in a situation that could have been avoided he was there to commit a crime and to get drugs and I am sure at all cost was the attitude so I do believe that he should have been convicted as a murderer and I wish Drug addicts would stop using their addiction as a crutch like they have cancer or some disease they have no control over if it's a disease then it's a selfish disease. I wonder how many Rehabs this guy was in and out of before this happened and how many more he will be in after his release Drug Addicts allways make things worse because now he will have to deakl with this and what really happened for the rest of his life GOOD LUCK!

38. Responding to Colleen - The success rate is so slim for an Ex actor he will always want the life he had and took for granted therefore will have chip on his shoulder like people owe him something like most druggies so instead I wish he had cherished what talent was given to him and the oppertunities that he had. he will now have to work an average Joe job. So when he is working McDonalds will or would you still feel the same way. And I agree with Big G what come around goes around I will give him 2 weeks after release and he will OD

44. There are no winners here. It's all very sad that a police officer lost his life in the line of duty. Mr. Brancato does not have to serve life in prison for a murder that he did not commit, but a police officer is still dead. There is nothing to celebrate here.
