Paris' Psycho Shopping -- OK for Aussie Pols

Paris Hilton enraged Australians by spending almost 100 bucks a minute at a boutique Down Under the other day -- but none other than the Deputy Prime Minister says it's actually a good thing.

Hiltie got skewered in the Aussie press for shelling out around US$4000 at the Wayne Cooper boutique in 40 minutes on Monday, but Deputy PM Julia Gillard tells AdelaideNow.com it's good for tourism. "I'm obviously not as well practiced at shopping as Ms Hilton is," says the pol, "but Australia's a great place to do it."

Social workers in Australia told media earlier Paris' free spending was "obscene."

16. Yeah, and if I ownes a high-end store, I'd be REALLY pissed off if someone bought a lot of stuff from me and paid for it. This would mean I'd have to go through the trouble of hiring - and paying - extra people, submitting more tax receipts to the government and ordering more inventory.

How terrible.

19. I don't care how much money one drops in 40 minutes. What I do care about is where the money was dropped and what country those products were made in. What is wrong with buying American products in America? Granted they are more expensive than the ones made in Communist China, but she has the money for it. Spending money in Australia does nothing to boost the AMERICAN economy.

22. Er what? I live there and nothing's been on the media except for a tiny article in Adeliade Now ...which is a backwater paper struggling on a slow news week for gods sake...no one's giving a toss how much she spends.

24. Hey Paris,

If you are sick of people thinking that you are stupid (per the People article a week ago) - stop acting like it! You can't expect to act like a blonde, dumb slut and hope that people think you're intelligent. If you are serious about being regarded as intelligent, write a (serious) book!, say smart things to the media, run for congress (for real and not as a publicity stunt), start a non-profit that you actually oversee, take the reins at your own company, try to act your IQ every time you set foot out your door. We don't expect you to be perfect, but if you actually want us to believe that you are smart, then you have to give us a little proof. I'm guessing that being a smart, blonde, inspirational heiress doesn't attract as much attention (or pay as well) as the blonde, dumb slut schtick, but you still gotta live with yourself right? I'm guessing you're scared to do it, scared that after all those years of acting dumb that you aren't really as smart as you think you are. Give it a try, you just might surprise yourself. And maybe one day we can all have an intelligent, wise, blonde "smart Paris".

Cheers,
Kat
