Conflict Over Travolta Death

UPDATE 1/5 -- Within hours, an autoposy will be performed and the coroner is expected to release the cause of death. Stay tuned.

There's a conflict brewing between the Bahama PD and John Travolta's camp regarding the time line of Jett Travolta's death.

People who are with Travolta are bristling at the suggestion Jett might have been left unattended for more than 10 hours, but this morning cops say they are sticking to their story. Meanwhile, we've learned Jett had suffered from grand mal seizures in the past and had taken anti-seizure medicine which the Travolta's say did not work, so the medication was stopped.

As for the time line, we're told Jett, his family and his two nannies had been boating on January 1. They returned to their townhouse at the Old Bahama Bay Hotel at around 6 PM. Jett was tired, went into his bedroom and went to sleep.

We're told nanny Jeff Kathrein watched TV in the adjoining room. The other nanny, Eli, returned to the townhouse at around 11:30 PM. Both Jeff and Eli turned in at around that time. After Jeff got up, he went into the bathroom and discovered Jett laying on the floor.

As for when Jett was last seen, cops say it was the at around 11:30 the night of January 1, when he went to the bathroom. Michael McDermott, John Travolta's lawyer and close friend, says Eli or Jeff may have gone into that bathroom during the middle of the night so the time frame would have been compressed.

McDermott also tells TMZ when Jeff and John Travolta administered CPR there may have been signs of life -- as in there may have been some respiratory function -- though that is not confirmed.

We're told Jett's disabilities included the inability to communicate well, in addition to some physical disabilities. As a result, there was a baby monitor in his room as well as a chime on the bathroom door. It's unclear if the two nannies slept through any signs of movement. The townhouse is relatively small -- around 1,000 square feet -- and the nannies and Jett were all on the bottom floor.

McDermott told us it's not unusual for Jett to sleep 12, even 16 hours a day, so Jett not being present is not unusual.

As for cause of death, the coroner will presumably determine that tomorrow.

As for John Travolta and Kelly Preston, McDermott tells us "they stopped crying long enough last night to try to write a press statement, which they haven't finished."

A number of celebrities, including Tom Cruise, have called Travolta and Preston offering condolences.

UPDATE: 12:38 ET -- Cops in the Bahamas PD tell TMZ "With lots of emotion that goes through a family in a time like this, it's understandable to come to your own ideas or terms, but we have an obligation to assure and convey with our public that the information we give is solid. The investigation is ongoing, but we stand by what we have said."

256. My heart goes out to any family that goes through a tragedy like this. It is uncomprehensible. However, I have had a seizure disorder since I was born and I am almost 50 years old. There are hundreds of medications that treat seizures and sometimes it is trial and error before the right one is determined. I find it difficult to believe that there was not one medication out there that would help with Jett's seizure disorder.

In any event, it is so sad and my my heart is aching for the family. I hope they can live with their beliefs for the rest of their lives because guilt can be a horrible thing.

257. John Travolta and his wife have just lost a child, they have watched over and protected this child for years, yet they spoke of him with love all the time. How can people be so cruel, let them grieve, show some compassion, it doesn't matter if they are wealthy, a tragity can strike anyone at anytime. Two nannies is reasonable care, it was his fate. Now we live in the United States of America, a democratic nation under which we have the right to practise any religion, our fore fathers left their countries so that we could live in peace and freedom. I am getting real tired of the religious right telling everyone what to believe and how to act. If you can not follow our bill of rights and allow everyone the right to follow their own faith without fear of prosicution then you need to leave our country.

I am so sorry for your great loss and the stupidity you will have to endure from the ignorant.

258. This whole thing is really very sad, no one deserves to lose a chld. We here were not there and we do not know what happen so it is not fair to speculate on something when one does not know the real truth.
But I will say this, if I made the amount of money the Travoltas do, I would make sure my son had the best medical care money could buy and I would keep trying until we found the correct medicines.

259. "had taken anti-seizure medicine which the Travolta's say did not work,"

Of COURSE the Travoltas would say it didn't work, it was Depakote, a psychiatric drug which of course they are highly opposed to. Kid would have still been alive if these freaks of nature had given him medication and the REAL help he needed. Another innocent victim of a greedy sick cult.

260. God puts a tear in your eyes, so he can put a rainbow in your heart. There is a better promise for Jett. Our hearts are with you and your family at this time. Peace be with You!

261. Negativity is all I ever read anymore. I rarely blog, but, this deserves a positive post. These people (famous OR not) LOST A CHILD! Regardless of your faith, the fact is that a child is dead and there are parents,a sister and many who loved this sweet little boy. I am a Christian and I believe in GOD - He is in control. They have their beliefs -so what. A real Christian prays for all and the negative remarks are typical of hypocritical people - stop it. Mourn the lost of a sweet little boy and pray for his family. PERIOD.

262. Wake up people! John Travolta is gay and has been for years. Scientology covers for him and his buddy Tom Cruise who is also gay. If these guys ever decide to quit schilling for the church you will all find out about their private lives real quick, trust me. My sister is an actress and has worked with Travolta many times. Little boys down to the trailer all day long, is how she described it. I grieve for Jett, not Johnny. For some reason being an a-list star and being gay, doesn't work in Hollyweird, but I can only imagine what living within this c harade must have been like for Jett. Learn about Scientology thru google and you'll see many more deaths due to this multimillion dollar cult which was started by a drug addicted hack science fiction writer. For all we know maybe Jett was trying to get away from the charade and when anyone in the c hurch tries that , serious trouble soon follows. Especially when your dad is that entrenched in the c ult. And that rich and famous.

263. I can only say one thing, that is I know how they feel as I lost my son in 2001 and the grieving still goes on. My son was 26 and no matter how old your child is they will always be your child. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family. It is a deep whole that will never close and time helps but never heals.

264. As soon as I heard this story I knew Scientology would be in the picture While we are free to worship in any way we like as long as it does not hurt others, Travolta and Preston should be arrested. Poor Jett. Imagine being born to these two... all that money and Jett was born into a family incapable of caring for his very special needs.

265. I am truly amazed that people are without compassion anymore. For goodness sake, these parents have lost their child. This is why celebrities do want to keep things private. people are so judemental, The people who are speaking out need to look at their own lives. How would we feel if a tradet like this was to happen to us and your friends and neighbors started talking about you so negative. The Travoltas are celebrities and but they are also human beings with feelings, they have lost their child. My heart goes out to them, may god be with them through this difficult time. You negative people out there, what a shame.

266. I have several years working with autistic children of this age. My first impression, on seeing Jett on TV, was that he was autistic. His blank expression and looking down made me wonder about autism. The 'red flags' went up upon reading that he had few communication skills. Yet, the Travolta's, by all reports, seemed to have tried to confront whatever his disorder was.

However, I wonder about the "nannies". Although we do not have a well- established timeline for the last 10-12 hours of Jett's life we should have a better idea about the activities of the nannies. Did they open Jett's door to see if he was sleeping? How often did they check on him? Or, do the Travolta's pay them to watch Wheel of Fortune or re-runs?

In any case, I would want to know more if I were his parent. Perhaps, after the Travolta's return to some more normal state they will confront these questions.

268. I am appalled by all of the non-compassionate statements given to the Travolta family during their time of grief.
All of you should be ashamed of yourselves. How dare you do this when the family is in pain over their loved one.
John, Preston and Ella my sincere condolences and love go out to you during your time of grief.
May the light of love, peace and faith be with you
Sincerely

269. they are parents who lost their son. what is wrong with some of you? I am sure they loved their son as much as any parents do and the pain must be horrible. I really dont care what religion they are at this point. God Bless them and their son who is with god now.

270. Imagine this, one of kate gosselin's children dies under a nanny's care...Idon't think she is going to ask for public understanding...she is going to be mad as hell...if the nannyt survives long enough to get out of the house, then kate will not quietly go willingly to her child's funeral without a fight. xox kate
