Conflict Over Travolta Death

UPDATE 1/5 -- Within hours, an autoposy will be performed and the coroner is expected to release the cause of death. Stay tuned.

There's a conflict brewing between the Bahama PD and John Travolta's camp regarding the time line of Jett Travolta's death.

People who are with Travolta are bristling at the suggestion Jett might have been left unattended for more than 10 hours, but this morning cops say they are sticking to their story. Meanwhile, we've learned Jett had suffered from grand mal seizures in the past and had taken anti-seizure medicine which the Travolta's say did not work, so the medication was stopped.

As for the time line, we're told Jett, his family and his two nannies had been boating on January 1. They returned to their townhouse at the Old Bahama Bay Hotel at around 6 PM. Jett was tired, went into his bedroom and went to sleep.

We're told nanny Jeff Kathrein watched TV in the adjoining room. The other nanny, Eli, returned to the townhouse at around 11:30 PM. Both Jeff and Eli turned in at around that time. After Jeff got up, he went into the bathroom and discovered Jett laying on the floor.

As for when Jett was last seen, cops say it was the at around 11:30 the night of January 1, when he went to the bathroom. Michael McDermott, John Travolta's lawyer and close friend, says Eli or Jeff may have gone into that bathroom during the middle of the night so the time frame would have been compressed.

McDermott also tells TMZ when Jeff and John Travolta administered CPR there may have been signs of life -- as in there may have been some respiratory function -- though that is not confirmed.

We're told Jett's disabilities included the inability to communicate well, in addition to some physical disabilities. As a result, there was a baby monitor in his room as well as a chime on the bathroom door. It's unclear if the two nannies slept through any signs of movement. The townhouse is relatively small -- around 1,000 square feet -- and the nannies and Jett were all on the bottom floor.

McDermott told us it's not unusual for Jett to sleep 12, even 16 hours a day, so Jett not being present is not unusual.

As for cause of death, the coroner will presumably determine that tomorrow.

As for John Travolta and Kelly Preston, McDermott tells us "they stopped crying long enough last night to try to write a press statement, which they haven't finished."

A number of celebrities, including Tom Cruise, have called Travolta and Preston offering condolences.

UPDATE: 12:38 ET -- Cops in the Bahamas PD tell TMZ "With lots of emotion that goes through a family in a time like this, it's understandable to come to your own ideas or terms, but we have an obligation to assure and convey with our public that the information we give is solid. The investigation is ongoing, but we stand by what we have said."

16. the kid had severe Autism/fragile X & they were embarrassed, it is a blessing in disguise now he can RIP & the family can not worry about their girls's safety,,autism become s violent & most need to be institutionalized.
nothing fishy about it..
many kids with autism "run off" as sick animals run off from their groups,,natures way of eliminating the very sick to ease the suffering

17. it's a shame. Clearly Jett was Autisitc. having an Autistic child myself, it is very easy to see his symptoms...deciding whether to medicate your child for the condition is your own personal decision. but the fact that he has 2 nannies for his son shows his immense love. Autisitc children cannot be left alone, they have a tendency of hurting themselves in various ways. if I had the finances, my child would have 24 hour care also. so please don't pass judgement on something you do not understand. you would have to walk in their shoes to understand them, and believe me, you don't want that. my condolances to the Travolta family and regardless of their religious beliefs, I pray God keeps watch over them.

18. All clues as of this moment point to Scientology and the cult-like attitudes toward modern medicine. They are like the Amish, backward toward doctors and hospitals. I feel bad whenever a child dies, but look inside toward the cause, ignoring modern medical techniques.

19. You bunch of blathering idiots!! Always want to spout your negative comments as if you have no flaws. I bet some of you are the same ones with no jobs sitting on your fat asses in front of a computer screen eating cheetohs. Downing your neighbors and people on the internet.
Travolta has in the past tried giving him medicine for the seizures. It did not work. That is not uncommon btw. He made sure his son was taken care of by not 1 but 2 nannies. A baby monitor and door chimes. Jett was never alone that day. They had all been boating.
You negative people NEED to get out from behind a computer screen and do something productive. It's not hard ... get some fresh air and quit trying to see drama where there isn't any. KARMA ...

20. Just the fact that they practice Scientology will add sensationalism to this sad event. Sounds like the Travoltas were extremely loving parents. Unfortunately, their religion may have actually played a part in this sad event. The end result is that they no longer have a son and will have to live with that fact forever. My heart bleeds for them. They will have no comfort from the Lord because they renounced him long ago. I just hope they can find solace somewhere.

21. And where were the parents for all these hours. Did they never look in on him or was it the nannies that looked after him 100% of the time. They are parents that pay to have their children looked after because they don't want to do it themselves. I am sure they must have a lot of guilt.

22. How on Gods name can you act as if your child is ill but not needing the only known treatments to prevent this sort of tragedy? I have a seizure issue as well. The meds didn't work, but I KEPT LOOKING TO FIND THE MIX THAT WOULD. I have been seizure free for eleven years, and off meds now for six of those. The brain will re-wire, per se, when there is a disorder such as mine. I obviously didn't know Jett and his condition, but SHAME on any parent who doesn't seek the complete treatment to save this disastor from happening. I seized once, Grand Mal, while pumping gas into my truck at a station by my home. Next thing I knew was three days later and alot of stitches to the head where I crashed into the gas pump and curb on my weay down to the ground. Thank God I wasn't driving, and didn't drive again til I had 12 months seizure free with meds.

Sometimes we do things against our better thoughts because there is a smarter way. The meds could have stopped this from being his death.

23. Is this really shocking? No meds and left alone for 16 hours at a time to sleep? When there is smoke there is fire. They neglected this poor kid and should be in jail. They killed him.

24. to AJ< of course it worked, it didn't work to them because they are Scientologists!

25. I hope they burn in hell. I don't care what anyone says. I don't care about their loss, I just care about the child that lost his life. I don't care how that comes across. They should have found a medicine that worked if it possibly didn't. Which I don't even believe it didn't work. that's all I'm going to say about this.

26. This behavior from the Travolta's is criminal! Not giving him meds, hiding him away due to embarrassment, stating the kid was watched when he clearly wasn't.....I hope they are punished to the fullest extent of the law. Scientology is a dangerous cult for the children of theses freaks!

27. It should be noted that anti-seizure medication does not always work. There have many, many cases where people prescribed these meds took them and continued to suffer from seizures. So it is not uncommon for the medication to have been discontinued.

It is apparent that the Travoltas did everything they could to safeguard against their son being unsupervised -- baby monitor and two nannies.

This is such a sad story.

28. #10 perhaps Autism isn't a stigma but a condition that IF his son suffered from it was none of our business. Maybe they wished not to publicize their son's illness and to only protect him from the media and this very circus that is surounding his death. If they were NOT in that stupid cult and this had happened it would simply be a tragedy. Shame on everyone who thinks its their place to say how the Travolta's should live their lives.

29. LOL. He "was on medication and it didn't work". Suuuuure it didn't work. Gee, would they have cut off his meds about the time they joined the bloody cult??? This smells all right.

30. I'm sure in the end it will be the mannies held responsible for Jett's death instead of his parents....sad
