Conflict Over Travolta Death

UPDATE 1/5 -- Within hours, an autoposy will be performed and the coroner is expected to release the cause of death. Stay tuned.

There's a conflict brewing between the Bahama PD and John Travolta's camp regarding the time line of Jett Travolta's death.

People who are with Travolta are bristling at the suggestion Jett might have been left unattended for more than 10 hours, but this morning cops say they are sticking to their story. Meanwhile, we've learned Jett had suffered from grand mal seizures in the past and had taken anti-seizure medicine which the Travolta's say did not work, so the medication was stopped.

As for the time line, we're told Jett, his family and his two nannies had been boating on January 1. They returned to their townhouse at the Old Bahama Bay Hotel at around 6 PM. Jett was tired, went into his bedroom and went to sleep.

We're told nanny Jeff Kathrein watched TV in the adjoining room. The other nanny, Eli, returned to the townhouse at around 11:30 PM. Both Jeff and Eli turned in at around that time. After Jeff got up, he went into the bathroom and discovered Jett laying on the floor.

As for when Jett was last seen, cops say it was the at around 11:30 the night of January 1, when he went to the bathroom. Michael McDermott, John Travolta's lawyer and close friend, says Eli or Jeff may have gone into that bathroom during the middle of the night so the time frame would have been compressed.

McDermott also tells TMZ when Jeff and John Travolta administered CPR there may have been signs of life -- as in there may have been some respiratory function -- though that is not confirmed.

We're told Jett's disabilities included the inability to communicate well, in addition to some physical disabilities. As a result, there was a baby monitor in his room as well as a chime on the bathroom door. It's unclear if the two nannies slept through any signs of movement. The townhouse is relatively small -- around 1,000 square feet -- and the nannies and Jett were all on the bottom floor.

McDermott told us it's not unusual for Jett to sleep 12, even 16 hours a day, so Jett not being present is not unusual.

As for cause of death, the coroner will presumably determine that tomorrow.

As for John Travolta and Kelly Preston, McDermott tells us "they stopped crying long enough last night to try to write a press statement, which they haven't finished."

A number of celebrities, including Tom Cruise, have called Travolta and Preston offering condolences.

UPDATE: 12:38 ET -- Cops in the Bahamas PD tell TMZ "With lots of emotion that goes through a family in a time like this, it's understandable to come to your own ideas or terms, but we have an obligation to assure and convey with our public that the information we give is solid. The investigation is ongoing, but we stand by what we have said."

32. how sad! This wonderful child left to die alone on a bathroom floor with all this "help" around...where were the parents! It's their child with disabilities - it's their responsibility!

33. I see the Scientologists are flocking here to defend the Travoltas.

The truth is their religion doestn't believe that "AUTISM" actually exists. They don't believe any mental illness exists. They also don't believe in psychological disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, psychosis, sociopathy, etc. They ALSO don't believe that ADHD, a neurobehavioral developmental disorder, exists, or that EPILEPS, a chronic neurological disorder, exists.

In addition, they think that all psychiatric drugs are toxic and dangerous, and that one should never take any kind of mood-altering medication, or even such drugs as Tylenol and Advil.

The “Church” of Scientology actually blames psychiatry for the Holocaust, as well as school shootings & even September 11th (this is not a joke).

Scientology claims to be able to treat those struggling with substance abuse, but their “treatment” of substance abuse includes little more than massive, often dangerous doses of vitamins and unhealthy extended sessions in a sauna. The Travoltas have admit Jett was treated with the se Scientology methods.

35. I could be way off here but in my opnion, when they say he was "on medication but it didnt work" they mean the vitamin packs that the scientology "dr.'s" hand out to replace modern medicine, and of course those aren't going to work.

I feel for Jett, and I do feel for the entire family as no one should have to lose a child and a child should never have to die, especially alone. (assuming he did pass away alone) Im a mother to a 10 year old boy, so I am not heartless here.

That being said - I knew Jett not being medicated would come out - and it saddens me. I think there is so much more to this story that we will never know. As some of you have said.... 'and the cover up begins'.

36. Why does TMZ have to be so nosy? Let them mourn in private. Stop making assumptions and prying for info. Why would complete strangers give TMZ info.

37. As the parent of a 21 year old son with Down syndrome, I felt that the Travolta's did try to keep Jett's autism a secret when they could have been such good advocates for the disabled.

I wonder what Jenny McCarthy thinks about this terrible tragedy......

38. Anti seizure meds DO work. If they don't, you try something else. Withholding meds. seems like child abuse. Scientology or not, the courts should have been protecting this child. Lucky for them it happened in the Bahamas.

39. Bullydog, because I refuse to judge this family based on a gossip site and media coverage that makes me a scientologist?

Christianity may sometimes allow for medication, but is sure does allow for judgmental creeps to spout their garbage and "faith" as if they are better than everyone else on the planet. In fact Evangelicals make Scientologists look sane.

You are probably right, but even THAT would be a stretch because they still haven't quite been open about the photog/personal trainer/ nanny that found Jett.. I'm sure, as a family, his butt will get covered too.

42. My condolences to the Travolta/Preston family on the death of their child. That said....No meds for seizures? Scientologists don't believe in them. There are many different anti-seizure meds. All of them work to some degree or another. None of them are perfect, however Scientologists don't believe in using them, so no meds. Kawasaki's Disease has nothing to do with an inability to communicate or the obvious disabilities that this child had. Autism does, but Scientologists don't believe in autism, so...poof! It doesn't exist.......except when your child dies. A very sad reality check. I say go the way of Germany and much of Europe. Ban or sharply restrict this destructive cult.

43. I am glad that no one from the Travolta family will read these comments. I feel sorry for people who can't let other people live their life the way they want to. Do you live such a peaceful wonderful life, that you can stand in judgement? I don't. I also wouldn't want to bury my child. Would you? Have you? What people believe to get through this life is their own business. NOT YOURS! I am happy, that they believe in something. Many people walk this earth just losted and believe in nothing. They are the ones that should concern you. This family has a lot to go through with this death and we should all feel sorrow for the family and pray in what ever way you do, for them to find peace. The rest is not our business.

44. The people that are questioning leaving Jett to sleep for 16 hours and calling it neglect have obviously NEVER been teenagers or don't know anything about a 16 year old's sleeping habits! It amazes me how closed minded people are when presented with something 'different' - so Scientology is 'different' to traditional christian religions - so what. We live in a free country where freedom of worship is highly treasured. Somehow as 'christians' we tend to get bent out of shape when someone challenges our beliefs and Scientology obviously challenges tradition. It really is ALL ok. You are free to worship and believe whatever you wish. John Travolta does NOT push his religion off on you - why do you insist on pushing your religion off on him?

45. I feel sad for the parents- No one deserves this. Death is something we are never prepared to handle, when a parent loses a child it is especially tragic. There is no scandal here- Just tragedy. John Travolta seems like a great guy.
