Conflict Over Travolta Death

UPDATE 1/5 -- Within hours, an autoposy will be performed and the coroner is expected to release the cause of death. Stay tuned.

There's a conflict brewing between the Bahama PD and John Travolta's camp regarding the time line of Jett Travolta's death.

People who are with Travolta are bristling at the suggestion Jett might have been left unattended for more than 10 hours, but this morning cops say they are sticking to their story. Meanwhile, we've learned Jett had suffered from grand mal seizures in the past and had taken anti-seizure medicine which the Travolta's say did not work, so the medication was stopped.

As for the time line, we're told Jett, his family and his two nannies had been boating on January 1. They returned to their townhouse at the Old Bahama Bay Hotel at around 6 PM. Jett was tired, went into his bedroom and went to sleep.

We're told nanny Jeff Kathrein watched TV in the adjoining room. The other nanny, Eli, returned to the townhouse at around 11:30 PM. Both Jeff and Eli turned in at around that time. After Jeff got up, he went into the bathroom and discovered Jett laying on the floor.

As for when Jett was last seen, cops say it was the at around 11:30 the night of January 1, when he went to the bathroom. Michael McDermott, John Travolta's lawyer and close friend, says Eli or Jeff may have gone into that bathroom during the middle of the night so the time frame would have been compressed.

McDermott also tells TMZ when Jeff and John Travolta administered CPR there may have been signs of life -- as in there may have been some respiratory function -- though that is not confirmed.

We're told Jett's disabilities included the inability to communicate well, in addition to some physical disabilities. As a result, there was a baby monitor in his room as well as a chime on the bathroom door. It's unclear if the two nannies slept through any signs of movement. The townhouse is relatively small -- around 1,000 square feet -- and the nannies and Jett were all on the bottom floor.

McDermott told us it's not unusual for Jett to sleep 12, even 16 hours a day, so Jett not being present is not unusual.

As for cause of death, the coroner will presumably determine that tomorrow.

As for John Travolta and Kelly Preston, McDermott tells us "they stopped crying long enough last night to try to write a press statement, which they haven't finished."

A number of celebrities, including Tom Cruise, have called Travolta and Preston offering condolences.

UPDATE: 12:38 ET -- Cops in the Bahamas PD tell TMZ "With lots of emotion that goes through a family in a time like this, it's understandable to come to your own ideas or terms, but we have an obligation to assure and convey with our public that the information we give is solid. The investigation is ongoing, but we stand by what we have said."

76. Their cult prevented them from having Jett on meds for his seizures. For those of you who keep saying "who cares what their beliefs were", some of us do care because too many people have died because of this cult. And now the Scientologists are on this message board and others trying to do damage control. It's not working anymore Scientologists.

78. This is so incredibly sad. If he suffered from grand mal seizures and the medication did not work, you don't just stop meds. You stay in constant contact with a neurologist ~ believe me, the neurologist would not condone giving up. You keep trying.

For the record, he could have been on meds and this whole ordeal could have played out the same way. Who knows if this is the absolute truth. We will probably never really know.

79. You people are evil! To actually be glad that this happened to the Travoltas just because of their faith, If they were Baptist or Mormons, would it have made a difference? No, They LOST their child. That is the bottom line. Maybe they kept Jett shielded from the press, because they didn't want idiots like the ones that have posted such horrible things, to be able to make comments about him. They are allowed to have a PRIVATE life.

80. #21 Judy: I agree completely with your comments. It seems very odd to me that they left their son alone all their hours with two MALE nannies. If he was that disabled and needed 24 hour care why would they need two nannies and why would the Travoltas not care for him themself? Lots of children have seizures and take anti-seizure medication (epilepsy) and do not require 24 hour care by TWO nannies. I would never trust two MEN (sorry guys!) to look after any child of mine...just sayin!

81. It is amazing to me how little the public knows about autism, considering it is happening in epidemic proportions.
Not all people with autism require being put into a nursing home type facility.

We do not know what type of autism Jett had. We do not know anything about Jett.

It concerns me that if he had a history of seizures, and one medicine did not work, you keep trying others until you find one that does. The answer is not no medicine at all.

Right about now, I am sure everyone in the Travolta family as well as staff, is saying what if I . . .

I believe the Travolta's are brainwashed when it comes to this so called "religion" of theirs.

My thoughts and prayers are with Jett.

83. I am saddened at what people are writting about. I don't care what religion they are, they are great parents. One of few who still love eachother and act normal! My heart goes out to them! I don't think that there was anything anyone could have done. Just a freak accident. I hope everyone leaves them alone so they can greive properly. There is nothing wrong with 2 male nannies either. This was a big boy! I hope the family all sticks together and doesn't pay any attention to some of the stories that are and will circulate about this.

84. Carol,

They don't believe in any medication including Tylenol, Advil, Ibuprofin etc etc. When one has a fever, they are asked to hold an object very still and tight - if that doesn't bring the fever down then you are doing it wrong. If you fall and skin your knee, you are taken back to the place that you skinned your knee and are to press your knee against the object that harmed you. That is supposed to put the injury back into the object.

They do not take antibiotics either - if they are ill they are given vitamin packs, sauna therapies and such. It is a very sad brainwashing organization that calls itself a church to avoid paying taxes on the millions of dollars they bring in by the day. I have spent far too much of my time gathering information about this cult lol Not just from reading about it but from ex members as well.

It is a very scary, sad, disgusting cult - it isn't a religion.

85. It is sad when a child dies, and I pray to God that he help ease their pain even though they don't believe in him.

86. If the nannies had not been doing their jobs, Jett would not have made it thru 16 years of life. The nannies were there for Jett's care and they did it well for many years. You need to remember, his parents were also in their rooms as well. Anyone could have gone to check on Jett. That means his mom and his dad. They took Jett off his medication because it wasn't working. As a parent of a child with seizures, when they are to the point that are as bad as the kind jett suffered, there are 2 options. You either have to medicate the life out of them to literally stop the seizures, if they can be stopped or you have to maintain a level that doesn't zonk them out 24/7 but allows them to halfway function and you are constantly watching for seizures because they are going to happen, regardless. i am not saying, their choice to stop all seizure medication is the correct one. I am saying they made their choice. You have to walk in their shoes to understand the choices that parents make. Let's stop the guessing at what happend and wait to see the final report.

87. None of you know what really happened. You're making assumptions based on what the press is saying. You don't know exactly how many meds their son was on, nor do you know what the nannies were doing while this traumatic event happened. Let's not pretend that we know everything when even the family of this poor boy don't know exactly what went on. I'm going to assume that they were doing what they honestly, truly believed was right for their son. So what if they're Scientologists? That's their choice to make. It's not something I'd ever believe in, although I DO belong to a church (Christian Reformed), and I don't expect to be judged for it. Now, from what I understand, Scientologists don't believe in meds. It's my (limited) understanding that neither do Christian Scientists, nor Jehovah's Witnesses. Do the same people accusing the Travolta's of 'killing' their son, judge other religions with such hostility? How devestating it must be to lose a child and have such horrible accusations spewed at the parents.

89. GOODNESS GRACIOUS! CAN'T ANYONE GRIEVE IN PEACE ANYMORE. HE JUST LOST HIS SON AND ALL THIS SPECULATION IS NOT GOING TO BRING HIM BACK. I BET U HALF OF THE PEOPLE MAKING THESE COMMENTS HAVE NO RELIGION IN THIER LIFE SO WHY DON'T THEY TAKE A GOOD HARD LOOK AT THEMSELVES FIRST. MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO ALL HIS FAMILY AND MAY THE LORD GIVE HIM PEACE DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME. THINGS DON'T ALWAYS HAVE AN EXPLANTION IT WAS JUST HIS TIME TO MEET THE MOST HIGH!

90. Why is it necessary for all celebrity parents to give information about their children? Some people are advocates and some are private. No one knows for sure what the child's diagnosis was. He could have had febrile seizures (from his original fever) that can recur, do not respond well to medication, and in an albeit small percentage of cases, can cause brain injury. I wonder if his behaviors changed after his illness. That could make his diagnosis different. It seems to me that the parents were doing a great deal within their understanding. Stuff happpens with good plans in place. People are human.
