Conflict Over Travolta Death

UPDATE 1/5 -- Within hours, an autoposy will be performed and the coroner is expected to release the cause of death. Stay tuned.

There's a conflict brewing between the Bahama PD and John Travolta's camp regarding the time line of Jett Travolta's death.

People who are with Travolta are bristling at the suggestion Jett might have been left unattended for more than 10 hours, but this morning cops say they are sticking to their story. Meanwhile, we've learned Jett had suffered from grand mal seizures in the past and had taken anti-seizure medicine which the Travolta's say did not work, so the medication was stopped.

As for the time line, we're told Jett, his family and his two nannies had been boating on January 1. They returned to their townhouse at the Old Bahama Bay Hotel at around 6 PM. Jett was tired, went into his bedroom and went to sleep.

We're told nanny Jeff Kathrein watched TV in the adjoining room. The other nanny, Eli, returned to the townhouse at around 11:30 PM. Both Jeff and Eli turned in at around that time. After Jeff got up, he went into the bathroom and discovered Jett laying on the floor.

As for when Jett was last seen, cops say it was the at around 11:30 the night of January 1, when he went to the bathroom. Michael McDermott, John Travolta's lawyer and close friend, says Eli or Jeff may have gone into that bathroom during the middle of the night so the time frame would have been compressed.

McDermott also tells TMZ when Jeff and John Travolta administered CPR there may have been signs of life -- as in there may have been some respiratory function -- though that is not confirmed.

We're told Jett's disabilities included the inability to communicate well, in addition to some physical disabilities. As a result, there was a baby monitor in his room as well as a chime on the bathroom door. It's unclear if the two nannies slept through any signs of movement. The townhouse is relatively small -- around 1,000 square feet -- and the nannies and Jett were all on the bottom floor.

McDermott told us it's not unusual for Jett to sleep 12, even 16 hours a day, so Jett not being present is not unusual.

As for cause of death, the coroner will presumably determine that tomorrow.

As for John Travolta and Kelly Preston, McDermott tells us "they stopped crying long enough last night to try to write a press statement, which they haven't finished."

A number of celebrities, including Tom Cruise, have called Travolta and Preston offering condolences.

UPDATE: 12:38 ET -- Cops in the Bahamas PD tell TMZ "With lots of emotion that goes through a family in a time like this, it's understandable to come to your own ideas or terms, but we have an obligation to assure and convey with our public that the information we give is solid. The investigation is ongoing, but we stand by what we have said."

91. Funny how that thanks to the internet, everyone thinks they have superior medical knowledge. Good gawd I bet y'all can become doctors now!!!!!!!

92. The family was wealthy, instead of two nannies, how about an RN traveling with him? As far as seizures, there are many medications and surgery that can correct it.Did they try them all? This is the first I have heard that Jett had disabilities (i.e difficulty communicating) so what were they hiding? Jenny McCarthy and other celebs have been up front about their kids that have autism or other problems...something doesn't smell right.

93. There *is* more than one type of medication for seizures. Depakote is NOT the only anti-seizure medication in the world. There are tons more anticonvulsant medications. Why didn't Jett try one of those, rather than just take him off the Depakote and just "give up" and let the cards fall where they may? That's just crazy, and negligent.

My heart breaks for the child and the pain he must've lived in. I do think his parents loved him, though. I've seen interviews where I saw his father speak of him. However, I think Scientology is a dangerous cult and can warp people's minds. I pray that Jett is now able to rest in peace, and that is family can come to terms with what happened to their precious child.

94. My heart goes out to the family. Everyone please stop speculating and have a little class.

95. Okie Doke,

I did not know that about t he tylenol, aspirin, etc. but I do know this. If it were not for antibiotics, both John and Kelly would have been dead by the age of 20 years old. The only thing that is making man live longer is modern medicine.

I`m sure if there were errors made, ie: the nanny fell asleep when he should have been listening to the door chime for Jett`s exit from the bathroom in a reasonable amount of time, both Kelly and John will be living with that guilt for the rest of their lives.

And to everyone that thinks having a nanny is weird. Everyone in my neighborhood has a nanny and a housekeeper and some people have drivers as well. I guess if you don`t live in that world you have no clue how other people live. The nanny is basically a baby sitter and dog walker, if you have a dog of course. They also run errands like pick up the dry cleaning or pick up groceries at the store. Most people with money have them. While not in a majority, there are still a lot of people that have a lot of money.

96. You gossip mongers need to get a grip! Think about it.. the Travoltas are wealthy beyond stature! They could have locked this boy up somewhere 1/2 way across the world from them and be done with it. Or paid another family millions to raise him. Many different things they could have done. Yet look! They kept this boy with them, with his family, for SIXTEEN YEARS!! HELLO?!!! Whatever their religion, it's obvious to me that they did indeed love their son. You guys need to keep it in perspective!
Also.. all you pro and anti Scientology trolls need to stop acting like your christians, or here with no agenda, or whatever. You are not helping. It's not fair to come on here and lie and try to manipulate people's perceptions! You guys are repugnant to a freedom loving society. Why can't you just be real and say "I'm a scientologist, and yada yada yada is what I think"... why you gotta' lie, and try to manipulate?? You should stand up for your religion and beliefs, and be open about it! Why does Scientology hide their tenets and beliefs from the general public?! It's shady... and quite frankly creeps me out.

Now let's see how long it takes these scientologists to start posting as scientologists.. and what the new lie will be. We're all ears. Dazzle us.

God Bless you Travolta family! Peace be unto you, in Jesus' name! Jesus loves you!

97. ANY "religion" that would have you sign legal papers; non disclosure clauses and CHARGE $$$ to "learn" about it is a SHAM! Kelly & John are now paying a price for their foolishness. A terrible price for sure, GOD will not be mocked. HE has HIS ways to make mockers pay. We humans cannot begin to see HOW or WHY, as long as faithlessness remains "Ye shall reap what you sow". Bitter is only the beginning of the rest of the Travolta's "family" life. Men forget that GOD uses people for HIS own purposes. Do you presume to know the mind of GOD? If so, I feel sorry for you, you're already lost.

98. "McDermott told us it's not unusual for Jett to sleep 12, even 16 hours a day, so Jett not being present is not unusual."...That in itself is frightening. Wouldn't you miss your child if he were missing for 16 hours out of the day??

99. Good grief, all of you are so full of crap, making assumptions about things you know NOTHING about. I am sure it was tricky to give him some privacy while maintaining his safety with supervision at his age. It does NOT matter what titles they gave him (autistic, etc). I have NO doubt they did everything they could in his best interest.

Don't point your finger at them - you have 3 more pointing back at yourself.

Judgmental morons.

100.
I am sickened by the possibility that a Father would leave his son,who needs protection,ever...for any reason! If Travolta had a movie to do he should have taken his son on EVERY SINGLE FILM AND KEPT HIM CLOSE.
That little boy is a gift from GOD and the parents took him for granted.I am no longer surprised by ANYTHING when it comes to CHILD NEGLECT! SHAME.

101. Here is the thing with depacote, if you just stop taking it, you will have seizures. You need to be taken off of it slowly.
And you do need to have tests done to keep an eye on your liver. Because it can cause damage if it is taken for long periods of time. But if Jett's body grew used to this medication, there is other medication that can be just as affective as depacote.

And yes I know a lot about this medication, because my 10 yr old is on it for bipolar disorder. And if he is just taken off of it, he can start to have seizures as well. And every 6 months we check his liver via a blood test.

So these parents should be held accountable for this.

102. If this ends up being another situation of "blame the parents" I'm going to puke. I do no know the Travoltas personally, but I do know John is a good guy. That's one thing he has conveyed to me over the years.
Let's give the Travoltas a break. Their child is dead. IF they made some mistakes, which anyone can make, let it pass.
With the way police departments do their jobs these days, absolutely anyone can be made out as negligent. Let's stop the nonsense and let John and his wife alone to grieve as long as they wish.

103. If Jett slept 12 - 16 hrs per day, it's probable that they had some sort of "schedule" going with him. Autistic children require a lot of care - and can be physically draining to their caretaker. It makes sense that they both slept while he did - so they could both be fully present while he was awake. It doesn't make sense that with all the "precautions" in place no one heard him get up and NOT come back to bed. Perhaps if he had been found within 15 minutes of not returning, the story would have had a different outcome. Sadly, we'll never know.

My stepdad has seizures. He has tried every possible medication out there - and although they do reduce the incidents, they don't completely stop them from happening (for him). Even with the meds, he suffers small visual seizures almost daily. He has to be watched out in public, cannot go anywhere alone. There are always signs before the seizure happens - he starts twitching a finger, his balance goes, his vision starts going, then he gets a blank look on his face. We can only get him some place "safe" at this point. He had a really bad one in the mall while we were Christmas shopping and it freaked out a lot of people - if you have never seen a seizure, it can be a scary thing. I cannot imagine a parent watching their child go through that, and not be willing to try every possible avenue to help their child overcome the seizures.

That said, my stepdad also has issues with the meds - the ones that work well make him "dopey" and feeling out of sorts for several hours. Yet he takes them - simply because they do prevent him from having really bad episodes most of the time.

I think most parents do the best they can in the moment. It's easy for others to sit back and condemn them for their actions in hindsight, and we may not agree with the Sci stance on medicine, but I don't think that changes the fact they loved their son and did what they - as his parents - felt was best for him (even if we disagree about their motivations for their child's treatment - it's not our choice to make). Not for a minute do I think they mistreated their son in any way. I think they - John and Kelly - are also victims, being caught up in the Co$.

I do think something good can come of this - and that is a more public awareness of the dangers of the Co$. It's scary how much clout this cult really has - they are bigger than one can ever imagine. There is a lot of money and power behind them and many people have suffered at their hands.

104. No one has mentioned the fact that a hotel manager was the first on the scene with the male nanny. How does that happen when these houses are not connected on this island? Pull up the photos of this place. Unless his parents were not home at the time. How could a manager beat John or Kelly to do CPR in a 1000 sq. foot house? Just lots of questions that seem really strange. I don't know the full story, but I sure can't wait to hear it. As a parent of 3 children, I bet there is a lot of guilty feelings right now. I just can't imagine not checking on my child in the morning (or at bedtime), even if they are 16. Very strange.

105. they do need time to grieve in peace, i agree with that. But when it comes to this medication they should have had him checked every 6 months and when the doctor say that his liver was being damaged, they should have changed his medication. And the family should not have taken him off the medication right away, they should have slowly taken him off.
