Piven's Fish Line Doesn't Fly with Producers

TMZ has learned Jeremy Piven's mercury-poisoning story isn't holding water with the producers of his show -- and they've filed an official grievance with Actors' Equity, the union that handles Broadway stars.

In a statement, one of the the show's producers, Jeffrey Richards, announced, "The producers of SPEED-THE-PLOW have officially filed a grievance with Actors' Equity re: Jeremy Piven's departure. A date for these proceedings is to be determined."

As we first reported, Piv ditched the show two months early, claiming he was suffering from a sushi-induced "mercury poisoning."

We know he was examined by another set of doctors for a second opinion. The results of that exam aren't yet known.

UPDATE -- Jeremy's rep tells TMZ, "The claims made by the producers of Speed-the-Plow are absurd and outrageous. Mr. Piven's serious medical condition has been well documented by multiple physicians. He withdrew from the play due to medical necessity on the advice of his doctors, after he was hospitalized and warned by his physicians that enforced rest was necessary in order to avoid serious medical problems, including a heart attack.

"His symptoms included extreme fatigue, spacial problems, difficulty remembering his lines, difficulty maintaining his balance, and an alarmingly low resting heart rate. Mr. Piven followed his doctors' advice, although his forced withdrawal from the show was an enormous personal disappointment since it was a life-long dream to perform on Broadway."

17. I don't necessarily believe the mercury story, but come on people! OJ Simpson murdered two people and is walking around free. So, maybe Jeremy let down some people who were going to see him on stage. Whether he was tired from partying too much, or he was bored with the play, or whatever... it's not like he murdered anyone. As a matter-of-fact, the only person who has lost anything from Jeremy's decision to leave the play early, is Jeremy. He will not recover from this, and it's too bad, because he is brilliant as Ari in Entourage. For those of you hate him, you won't see him much in the media, if at all, after Entourage ends or is cancelled.

18. Its amazing how narrow minded the public can be. Mercury poison is a legitimate and troubling diagnosis. Google it and you will find this is true. Mainstream, pill pushing medicine is not the only authority in healthcare. Those who don’t think beyond their narrow little field of vision or who have not had a serious medical condition for which modern American medicine could not find a cure will never know.

19. I found his story to be suspect from the start. Even more so after he said to Diane Sawyer that he found about the mecury thing 5 months ago and hasn't eaten fish since. That was way before rehearsals started for Speed The Plow. So seeing how fast he has "recovered", he sure would have been fine for the show if he supposedly stopped eating fish 5 months ago.

20. Piven was out carousing every night after his show. Doen't sound like a sick man to me.
He got bored, and wanted to leave the production early.
He's full of something other than mercury.
Leave Broadway to the real actors!

22. To those of you who think his story is legit: The dude was soooo sick, right? But, he was able to take a 14 hour flight to Thailand for a holdiay one week after pulling out of the play. He got back to the USA in time to make the rounds at the Golden Globe pre-parties and ceremonies. He did not want to work 8 shows a week, but rather, have a vacation until he starts playing himself again in February when Entourage starts filming again. He is just arrogant enough to think he could come up with this story of being sick -and= that Mamet, etc would buy it hook line and sinker. Problem is he is TOO STUPID to lay low and "recuperate"...He is flying all over the world, partying away -and- thinks no one is watching. What an idiot.

27. Doing 8 shows per week is a lot harder than working on a TV show, where most of the time you're sitting around waiting for shots to be set up.

As someone else wrote, he wasn't too sick or tired to go partying every night while he was in the play! And he hasn't been too sick to travel or party since he's left the show.

If the doctor can diagnose mercury poisoning, the doctor can fix it. Why couldn't his doctor? A friend of mine recently had the diagnosis and she was treated with supplements. She didn' t have to stop working! Of course, she doesn't drink and run around every night, so she had an "unfair" advantage!
