Piven's Fish Line Doesn't Fly with Producers

TMZ has learned Jeremy Piven's mercury-poisoning story isn't holding water with the producers of his show -- and they've filed an official grievance with Actors' Equity, the union that handles Broadway stars.

In a statement, one of the the show's producers, Jeffrey Richards, announced, "The producers of SPEED-THE-PLOW have officially filed a grievance with Actors' Equity re: Jeremy Piven's departure. A date for these proceedings is to be determined."

As we first reported, Piv ditched the show two months early, claiming he was suffering from a sushi-induced "mercury poisoning."

We know he was examined by another set of doctors for a second opinion. The results of that exam aren't yet known.

UPDATE -- Jeremy's rep tells TMZ, "The claims made by the producers of Speed-the-Plow are absurd and outrageous. Mr. Piven's serious medical condition has been well documented by multiple physicians. He withdrew from the play due to medical necessity on the advice of his doctors, after he was hospitalized and warned by his physicians that enforced rest was necessary in order to avoid serious medical problems, including a heart attack.

"His symptoms included extreme fatigue, spacial problems, difficulty remembering his lines, difficulty maintaining his balance, and an alarmingly low resting heart rate. Mr. Piven followed his doctors' advice, although his forced withdrawal from the show was an enormous personal disappointment since it was a life-long dream to perform on Broadway."

31. #15. I think you nailed it.

Piven didn't want to be bothered doing the play, good reviews or not. It wasn't about reviews. It was about...oh gosh...he had to do the same thing night after night. Two nights of standing Os? Fun, fun, fun. Third night? Not so fun, get me out of here, this is boring, on to something else.

33. The producer commented that Mr. Piven had left Broadway to pursue a career as a thermometer.
(Would that be Farenheit or Celcius?)

34. piven was a regular on ellen degenere's old sitcom a few years ago; maybe it was ellen's prolonged exposure to this dbag that drove her into becoming a lesbian...

35. Are you kidding me, does anyone know how much fish one would have to eat to get "mercury poisoning" ? Did this schmuk just happen to get the only tainted pieces out of all the people that ate at the same places he did ? Anyone who believes this guy is a begger idiot than the story teller for believing it. Next time, the producers will have to think long and hard about considering hin. With so many other half talents out there his chances are limited to voice overs if he is lucky. Also he is not funny, just like Sinbad has never been funny.

39. Perhaps pulling out of the project was all that bad of a decision for Piven to make. I sure as hell won't pay to go see a movie called 'Mow the Plow' or whatever the hell. I might use one of my free Blockbuster rentals to see it, but that's about it.

40. Did he provide the producers with a "doctor's note". Even we little people have to have a doctor's note after missing three days in a row. My big curiousity is why the only date you see him with is his mother? There is nothing wrong with being gay, but the mother thing always gives it away if you aren't out of the closet.

43. Wow! You people are brutal. It is likely that this young man had mercury poisoning and was advised to drop out of the play. However, you just seem to hate him and decided to post a lot of crap. LOL!

45. Jeremy Piven is the most talented, exceptional actor he's ever known. How could he be expected to perform the exact same lines---whether it's for a Broadway show or not!---on stage night after night after night?!! How droll! How drab! I mean, PLEASE!! He's just oh-so much better than that!! But as all good narcissists know, if you want to get people to side with you, you have to evoke their sympathy. Ooh, poor Jeremy! Mercury poisoning!?! How utterly AWFUL!!! Of COURSE it would be something extremely rare and unique...so just like Jeremy himself! So, naturally, the mere commoners would question it!
