Piven's Fish Line Doesn't Fly with Producers

TMZ has learned Jeremy Piven's mercury-poisoning story isn't holding water with the producers of his show -- and they've filed an official grievance with Actors' Equity, the union that handles Broadway stars.

In a statement, one of the the show's producers, Jeffrey Richards, announced, "The producers of SPEED-THE-PLOW have officially filed a grievance with Actors' Equity re: Jeremy Piven's departure. A date for these proceedings is to be determined."

As we first reported, Piv ditched the show two months early, claiming he was suffering from a sushi-induced "mercury poisoning."

We know he was examined by another set of doctors for a second opinion. The results of that exam aren't yet known.

UPDATE -- Jeremy's rep tells TMZ, "The claims made by the producers of Speed-the-Plow are absurd and outrageous. Mr. Piven's serious medical condition has been well documented by multiple physicians. He withdrew from the play due to medical necessity on the advice of his doctors, after he was hospitalized and warned by his physicians that enforced rest was necessary in order to avoid serious medical problems, including a heart attack.

"His symptoms included extreme fatigue, spacial problems, difficulty remembering his lines, difficulty maintaining his balance, and an alarmingly low resting heart rate. Mr. Piven followed his doctors' advice, although his forced withdrawal from the show was an enormous personal disappointment since it was a life-long dream to perform on Broadway."

46. Jeremy is no longer buddies with John Cusack because his ego got in the way.
Once his Ari Gold gig is over, he'll be a has been.
Or hey, maybe he can make a comeback down the road, like Mickey Rourke! HA!

47. Why drop out?
Cause Broadway isn't as much fun as TV. Broadway can be grueling when you have to do the same lines 8 times a week. he had been whining about the show before dropping. I work on B'way (stage managing, not acting) and the rumor has been he is a LA hack that thought it would be 'good' for his career but found it too much of a grind, especially in light of his tepid reviews. Really, he may never work on B'way again, but ti's not going to hurt his money machine onTV/Cable.
Why not drop out? Another reason to keep TV and Stage on different coasts.....

48. he was never on time to work. He hung out all night. Every night. If you want an TRUTH come to the theater and ask anyone backstage. I hope someone comes to talk to them. You can't hide from people who know what he was really like.

49. The truth is, he is a one dimensional actor at best. He is comfortable doing Ari Gold because he doesn't have to act. He can come to work every day and act like an ass, how much prepping does he have to do for that? That's his real persona. Hig ego has overtaken his common sense. He doesn't realize that your reputation can make or break you in Hollywood. He thinks he is in the same league with the likes of Clint Eastwood or brad Pitt, he's not and never will be. He should be grateful he had a chance to do Broadway. His questionable sex life in Hollywood and lack of dates at events is always a source of jokes, What grown man always brings his mother? Other than Tom Cruise, and everyone knows the rumors he dodged for years.
