Asian Group Not Mad at One of These People

When Miley Cyrus transformed herself into Hanoi Montana for this photo -- she had to know it would turn into bad fortune.

The OCA -- a group "dedicated to advancing the social, political and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans" -- is fuming at this photo of Miley and pals for using what they have deemed an offensive, stereotypical gesture.

The OCA sent us this statement: "The photograph of Miley Cyrus and other individuals slanting their eyes currently circulating the Internet is offensive to the Asian Pacific American community and sets a terrible example for her many young fans. This image falls within a long and unfortunate history of people mocking and denigrating individuals of Asian descent...

...Not only has Miley Cyrus and the other individuals in the photograph encouraged and legitimized the taunting and mocking of people of Asian descent, she has also insulted her many Asian Pacific American fans," said George Wu, executive director of OCA. "The inclusion of an Asian Pacific American individual in the photo does not make it acceptable."

"OCA hopes that Miley Cyrus will apologize to her fans and the APA community for this lapse in judgment and takes the opportunity to better understand why the gesture is offensive."

1789. Haha, I'm Asian-American and all of my friends, myself included, just thought it was a laugh. Honestly, the OCA made us look worse than what Miley did - now people think we're overaggressive and care and cry about this crap. George Wu, you don't represent us.

1790. "But obviously, Miley Cyrus knows that its racist and simply doesnt care."
I didn't realize this was so serious, but I know better now. Who knows whether she knew it was racist or not?

"So for anyone who says "who cares" and are of any ethnicity other than WHITE, you should be ashamed."
Sorry. Guess I should have voted the other way, but not until I read the comments did I realize that this seriously offends some people. See, I'm apologizing. And maybe whites aren't discriminated against (I'm not white) but that doesn't mean they're the only race capable of it. I could have made the same mistake. I'll make sure not to.

By the way, chalk the red eyes up to camera flash. But the wine glass had me wondering.

1791. "It's unfortunate that ignorant, close-minded people don't understand how disrespectful this is to Asians."

I understand your frustration, although I'n not Asian. Ignorant I will accept, because I assumed this wasn't disrespectful, just silly. Close-minded, however, I will not. Apparently different people (even Asians) respond differently to the same photograph, so there's a bit of a grey area as to whether this is racist or not. I was never clear on whether it was all right to slant your eyes or not.

After this, I would avoid it for the sake of those who don't like it, but is there a point where I have to allow some ignorance on the part of people who aren't sure what offends me personally?

1792. Haha, the Asian guy is the only one in the photo whose eyes look Caucasian. This would be an issue if the world of teen starlets were the real world. Fortunately, it isn't.

1793. i think ppl need to stop over reacting and stop hatting on the talent and love of fans she has ..... I think it was all of them having fun in a group with friends like everyone else but because she's famous she's not aloud to have fun.... I don't think it's right ppl for get she's just a girl still and thats really, really sad they are other famous ppl out there don't worst.

1794. FWIW, I think the first 2 lines of this story is far more racist than anyone making slanty eyes ever could be. I used to date a guy from malaysia and he said they make fun of english speakers all the time by saying "blah bleh blah" and stuff like that. It happens everywhere guys, and for an adult to come out and say they're offended by what a child does in a picture?!!?!? Pathetic.
