To those screeching about the benefits of breastfeeding, I have 3 children, and breastfed them all. With my 1st baby it was not a bonding thing at all, and not pleasant for many months. Blisters, bleeding nipples, etc. I stuck with it out of pure guilt because I was surrounded by breast feeding nazis guilt trippers like yourselves and was too young, naive and suffering badly from post partum depression, a 43 hour labor followed by an emergency c-section and had an extremely colicky baby who projectile vomited for 3 months. My son and I both would have been far better off if his dad could have fed him by bottle while I freaking recovered my health and my sanity. He'd have kept down more calories, not gotten repeatedly dehydrated, etc. The 2nd and 3rd children were a completely different story, I wasn't ill, they fed well and didn't have the gastric problems, and all was fine. Breast feeding is an individual choice and it's nazis like you who are so rabid about it that you insist even starving children who could be saved by formula are "better off" getting 1 oz of milk from a movie star than the regular calories they and their starved mothers lack. Insanity. Take a hike and let women determine for themselves and their babies - each individual baby - and what is healthiest for each situation.

"Mmmmm, how can I get people to look at me and my already-too-familiar tatas all while looking like a nice, generous person rather than a desperate, publicity seeking slut? Let's breast feed an orphan and then circulate the photos! Yessssssssss"

DORIAN....Did you see the actual story or know anythng about their situation? I'll guess not, because if you did you wouldn't be so dumb as to suggest formula for those people. They cannot afford formula and even if they did in their unsanitary conditions they would be worse off. If women there weren't afraid to breastfeed then they wouldn't have the problem of malnutrition and would therefore be thriving.

Sometimes Hollywood needs to leave their glands at home. I suppose she felt she was going the right thing. But what happened to the hungry baby when she she left the next day ...... I wish these people that visit these third world countries would promote birth control and bring a case of Trojans and make them understand if they have babies they go hungry not for one day but for years.

Awesome. She not only provided nutrition, but comfort too. My only concern is...what now? I hope and pray this baby is still getting the many benefits of breastfeeding.

Dorian: It sounds like your baby had GERD and breastmilk is best for it. Things, most likely, would have been even worse if you had used formula. My youngest had it and it does take a toll...I still haven't recovered and I had some help! Anyhow, I attempted to switch to formula (thinking it was an allergy to something I was eating/drinking and knowing nothing about GERD) and it didn't go well at all. I agree though...while I support and encourage breastfeeding, it is a personal choice.

The way you compare formula with breast milk is outrageous! They are not the same and poor countries/families cannot afford formula. The health damage alone, not just the cost of the powder and the sometimes not so clean water used to make it with, is horrendous.
Shame on you!

I love Salma. I think it's wonderful what she did. The baby looks so content. This isn't something that's unheard of. Grandmothers have actually jump started their milk for their grandchildren when the mom was unable to breast feed. I think it's great! Kudos to Salma. Love her!

Nursing mom of two

Good for her! But shame on you TMZ for acting like formula is the way to feed a baby! Formula is nasty and was meant for infants who did not have access to breastmilk. Then some greedy white men decided to market it to all so they could become multi-billionares and jeapordize the health of infants across the world.

HIV is the virus that can cause AIDS. It is transmitted in blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk. A person can get HIV by having unprotected sexual intercourse with someone who has the virus

sharing needles or syringes with someone who has the virus
receiving transfusions of blood products donated by someone who has the virus
getting HIV-infected blood, semen, or vaginal secretions into open wounds or sores
being deeply punctured with a needle or surgical instrument contaminated with the virus
passing from a woman to her fetus during pregnancy or birth
HIV cannot be transmitted by exchanging saliva. Casual contact such as kissing, sharing water glasses, or hugging does not pass HIV.

HIV infection or HTLV-1: Breastfeeding is not recommended.

Infectious (contagious) tuberculosis: Breastfeeding is safe after the mother has undergone treatment and is no longer contagious.

Hepatitis A: Breastfeeding is safe after the mother receives a dose of gamma globulin.

Hepatitis B: Breastfeeding is safe after the baby receives a dose of Hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG). The baby should also be started on the first of three doses of Hepatitis B vaccine.

Herpes simplex: Breastfeeding is safe if there are no lesions on the breast.

Chicken pox: Breastfeeding is safe as soon as the mother is noninfectious, meaning all spots are crusted over.

toShelley - you are partly correct. the toxins passed through cigarette smoke will certainly not benefit the child any, but the positives of breast milk far outweigh any effects the smoking could have. If you are a mom who is a smoker, try to cut back but STILL feed your baby breast milk. It's very good for them. I quit when I was pregnant and nursing for the health of my baby and other women should do so too.
