No Pot Charges

for Phelps

2/16/2009 5:15 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Michael PhelpsThe ridiculously stupid Michael Phelps pot investigation is finally over.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said today he was not going to charge Michael Phelps over that photo of him smoking a bong.

The photo was taken at a party in November when Phelps visited the University of South Carolina. Sheriff Lot defended his investigation by saying, "Michael Phelps is truly an American hero ... but even with his star status, he is still obligated to obey the laws of our state."

Eight other people were arrested in connection with the photo -- seven for possession and one for dealing.

UPDATE -- On his Facebook page, Michael Phelps released this statement: "I'm glad this matter is put to rest. But there are also some important lessons that I've learned. For me, it's all about recognizing that I used bad judgment and it's a mistake I won't make again. For young people especially -- be careful about the decisions you make. One bad decision can really hurt you and the people you care about. I really appreciate the support my family and fans have shown me and now I will move forward and dive back into the pool, having put this whole thing behind me."

People, the ones who got arrested were the ones who #1 lived there (so they are automatically responsible under the law for the drug being in their residence), and the one who the mj supposedly belonged to, and I think some of them that supposedly sold it to the person who brought the mj to the party. They didn't charge Michael because it didn't belong to him and he didn't live there. It was a stupid witch-hunt though, that was blown so far out of proportion it isn't even funny.

Sheriff must be a big fan of Phelps
It's like the LA Jail systems
If you are wasted space in print and wasted air time in all types of media and do not have a profession of course you may get away with anything from smoking drugs, drinking driving and murder.
Please either get all charges dropped or stay in our waiting overbooked cells for a few hours. The choice is always yours

Michael should send a note to the sheriff with the following:

Dear dumbass,

Trying to get some pub off my fame? Nice try douche.... now stop being a playground cop and investigate some real crimes, say murder, robberies, etc..

Sincerely,

Michael Phelps

CORRECTION TO PREVIOUS: I do agree with #15's comment, but it was #17's that I thought said it best. All these hypocrites can tell their spouses that they no longer want head because (oh my god!) it's illegal. Soon enough, these martini swilling hypocrites will die off and we can make things right. And, #26, you have a unique perspective, glad you recognize the difference between the substances you are addicted to and MJ. If only everyone could be as intelligently open-minded.

Lott stated that he has seen people die from marijuana. Really?

Not one death has ever been directly linked to marijuana itself. Although, many legal drugs cause hundreds to hundreds of thousands of deaths per year, foremost among them are alcohol, nicotine, valium, aspirin, and caffeine. This isnt even including the many deaths/abuse from prescription meds.

Doctors determine how safe a drug is by measuring how much it takes to kill a person (they call this the LD50) and comparing it to the amount of the drug which is usually taken (ED50). This shows that marijuana is hundreds of times safer than alcohol, tobacco, or caffeine. A DEA Judge even states, ``marijuana is the safest therapeutically active substance known to mankind.''

Then Lott had the audacity to use an example to point that marijuana causes you to murder, as he said that inmates had confessed to.

What is this? Reefer Madness? Really, murder? What a poor excuse for a scare tactic that hasn't even been used since the 20's and was thrown out of the govt's "reasons to not smoke pot". The chose not to use this angle due to users and experimental results proving false to this accusation.

Cannabis was given the name marijuana to make this herb sound foreign as a way to bring the people to fear the use and users of this harmless herb, another "bullet" in the war on drugs. Cannabis is NOT a gateway drug. There is NO such thing as a "gateway" drug. If you are curious to try substances, that is your decision. There is nothing in cannabis causes you to try other drugs.

In 1999, There were 40 million people in this country (U.S.) who have smoked marijuana for a period of their lives -- why aren't there tens of millions of heroin users, then? In Amsterdam, both marijuana use and heroin use declined after marijuana was decriminalized, even though there was a short rise in cannabis use right after decriminalization.

When Nixon was in office, being as determined as he was to stop the use of cannabis, he noticed the exceedingly high reported use of heroin and heroin addiction to individual users. The soldiers were coming back from Vietnam smuggling this drug and helped bring it in to the states. Nixon found this was a perfect opportunity to use this for the war on marijuana and stated that with the use of marijuana, users turned to a harder drug, heroin, which started the "gateway" idea.

From hero to zero in just one hit.

He got away with it, 8 others didn't.
How do we know it was weed in the bowl? Why the ___ else would he be publicly apologizing?

In the long run, this will most likely still cost him. He's tainted goods now for sponsors. Same as the Dell Dude.

Are you kidding me. They are not gonna charge him, but have arrested 8 others. Why is he so damn special. He is no hero. He is a loser. If you are going to charge one you need to charge them all which would include his sorry asss.

just wondering

He should be prosecuted. He broke the law. If you don't like a specific law, get busy and have it legally taken off the books. But as long as it's the law, every good citizen is obligated to obey. Don't rationalize his actions or your actions by saying "everybody does it". As your dear old mother probably said to you while you were a teen-ager, "If all your friends jumped off a bridge, would you, too??" So put on your big-boy pants, grow up and obey the law or suffer the consequences. And stop making excuses for law-breakers, famous or not. Nothing personal against Michael, he's a phenomenal athlete but he needs to be a law-abiding citizen if he's being used as a role model.

Wow ... i think this is hilarious! Not only did every late night talk show host bash the media and the law/ but every american (except the prude excuses for human beings) that witnessed the announcement of this "oh so unbelievable" news thought it was ridiculous! He shouldn't have been taking pictures of it/ but even if so, what is the big deal? He wasn't sniffing a line of NOSE CANDY or shooting up hard-core drugs?! Even Bill Clinton once said "i didn't inhale" and that was just to please the other 30% of americans who need to shut up and smoke!
