Todd Marinovich -- Sacked By the Law Again

4/3/2009 7:32 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Todd MarinovichAt this point, Todd Marinovich has more mug shots than football cards.

TMZ has learned the former USC superstar quarterback turned NFL bust was arrested for the billionth time in Newport Beach today -- this time for skipping out on drug court.

Marinovich was scheduled to face charges of possession of dangerous drugs, possession of a hypodermic needle, and resisting arrest.

The 39-year-old was arrested outside of his mother's home and hauled off to jail -- where he's currently being held with no bail.

TMZ STAFF: Do you happen to know if this failure to appear in drug court was from his arrest in '07? I have several calls in to friends and family of Todd, but nobody knows for sure whether or not this was a new charge. He has been doing so well since being released after that incident...he's even engaged and expecting a baby in May. It may not matter to anyone who doesn't know him, but anyone who has been with him through all these years will be relieved to know that he didn't fall off the wagon again, if that is the case. Todd is an amazing, kind hearted man with talents (even in his worst of days) that most people only dream of having. Is there any way that you could clarify what the charges are this time? Thank you!!!

I feel bad for this guy. Some of you may be too young to remember, but his Dad, former NFL lineman Marv Marinovich, was famously portrayed (in a weirdly upbeat 1988 Sports Illustrated article) as exercising total contol over Todd's life from infancy through High School in order to "breed" the "perfect quarterback." In the same article, Marv admitted that he was a "tyrant" and a "fanatic," and Todd was described as "America's first test tube athelete."
Marv's fanaticism suceeded . . . sort of. After being drafted in the first round by the Los Angeles Raiders, Todd did well for a few games, but then, after losing a couple of games in which he played poorly, he very publically imploded and never took the field in the NFL again. In the end he was released by the Raiders and went on to similarly checkered careers in the Canadian Football League and, finally, in the Arena Football League --- dogged by drug problems and legal problems all the way down. His football career arguably hitting bottom when he was arrested on drug charges during a Los Angeles Avengers practice. Most sports commentators attributed Todd's downfall to psychological problems caused by his strange, hypercontrolled upbringing.
So now this (aging) kid not only has to deal with what, in retrospect, appears to have been the childhood from hell, he also has to deal with the humiliation of his own public meltdown and fall from grace. No wonder he's on drugs. I would be too.
Good luck, Todd.
