Michelle Obama -- Fashion Diva or Disaster?

4/4/2009 1:29 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Sweatergate 2009! Michelle Obama wore a sweater when she met with Queen Elizabeth II this week, and her wardrobe choice has kicked up major drama in the fashion world.

The First Lady often wears affordable American brand clothes to events, and apparently Oscar de la Renta isn't happy about it. He told Women's Wear Daily, "You don't...go to Buckingham Palace in a sweater."

But in this economy, if the First Lady wears clothes most Americans can afford -- isn't that a good thing?

I really like Michelle Obama’s style - sometimes classic, sometimes elegant, sometimes a little funky - and she doesn’t seem to care what people think about it. I saw this slideshow of some of her fashion highlights for the first 100 days in the White House if you want to check it out too:

They're so fake! Affordable?? Not many people can pay $140 or more for a cardigan sweater. Much less the $540 tennis shoes she wore to feed the homeless this week. Give me a break.

As president, Obama should never offer an Ipod or DVD collection as a gift. Obama, a graduate of Harvard, should have the intelligence or staff to think of a tasteful gift. As for the First Lady, if this were an outdoor lunch the outfit is fine. As for meeting the Queen of England, she should have had enough respect for herself, husband, the United States, and England's Queen to wear a superb outfit.

Change? For the worst, yes. Hope? I don't think so.

I A-am jus glad she did not show her shoulders meeting the QUEEN. can someone show me if the QUEEN of ENGLAND ever showed up with a strapless dress or one strap. There is a elegant glamour when our women in power have left some mystery of their physic. Attention should be emphasize on intelligent, practical, appropiately modest attire.
