Mel Gibson's Wife

Files for Divorce

4/13/2009 12:37 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

We've learned Mel Gibson's wife Robyn has just filed legal papers to divorce Mel Gibson, her husband of 28 years, citing "irreconcilable differences." Pretty ironic -- Robyn signed the papers the day before Good Friday.

Mel Gibson

Sources tell us there is no prenuptial agreement -- they were married in 1980, before Mel Gibson amassed a fortune estimated at $900 million back in 2006. Under the laws of California, community property -- which includes earnings -- is divided 50/50.

The Gibsons have 7 children, but only one -- Tom, who turns 10 tomorrow -- is a minor. In Robyn's legal papers, filed this morning in L.A. County Superior Court, she seeks joint physical and legal custody of Tom.

Robyn is also asking for spousal support and attorneys fees.

Robyn lists the date of separation as "to be determined." This is important, because earnings generally cease to be community property when the couple separates. There could be a skirmish over this. We're told the couple grew increasingly apart over the last few years, especially since Mel's drunk driving arrest in 2006.

There have been reports that Mel has been involved with another woman, which the actor denies, but we're told the reasons for the divorce go beyond any third party.

Launch PhotosIf there is a fight, Robyn is in good hands -- she's repped by disso-queen Laura Wasser, who has handled divorces for the likes of Angelina Jolie, Britney Spears and Stevie Wonder.

UPDATE: Robyn and Mel Gibson just issued a statement: "Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so."

Sources tell TMZ the couple has been separated for more than 2 1/2 years. We'll see if Robyn agrees. Again, the separation date is important in dividing assets.

OMG THE ALMIGHTY CHRISTIAN MAN WAS UNFAITHFUL. HE IS A WONDERFUL ROLE MODEL FOR THE CATHOLICS. WHY DONT HE JUST BECOME A PRIEST THEY WILL JUST PLACE HIM SOMEWHERE ELSE ONCE HE IS CAUGHT DOING THE WRONG THING AND LIFE WOULD GO ON LIKE NORMAL.

So in Mel's terminology, he now has to hire a jew lawyer to prevent being jewed over in court :)

I am thinking he isn't going to get a very favorable hourly rate! "Oh, I will represent you - but it will cost ya putz!"

I'm always amazed when great looking actors/actresses marry ugly people. I always thought she was so unattractive. Don't know why he married her. Maybe it was for her sugar tits.

So much for Catholicism having any meaning interms of marriage, and that goes for all religions as well. The Human animal does what it does because it wants to do as it does!
God has really done a poor, if not failing job with planet earth when it comes to Humans.

The divorce is a shame, but unlike so many other children, their kids will still grow up in safety and security. I feel that the U.S. should do more to help those unfortunate kids around the world. The Borgen Project has good info on the estimated cost of ending global poverty:

$30 billion: Annual shortfall to end world hunger.

$550 billion: U.S. Defense budget.

Wow! I thought every woman wanted Mel Gibson and here she is giving him the old heave-ho. So, the dude was having an affair. What else is new. Studs like that can't help but have a few flings with the way women are always waving their little behinds at him. As soon as most women see Mel Gibson, they break into a sweat. Robyn should understand that much. She'll probably be sorry when she does, because she probably isn't going to find another Mel Gibson anytime soon. She probably married him before he became famous, so she lucked into a good thing. Now she'll take half of his money away and relax for the rest of her life. So all you jealous, desperate women out there, now's your chance. Oh, he'll cheat on you, too. No one woman is enough for THE ROAD WARRIOR.

I'm sad to see their marriage end, so few marriages in Hollywierd last past just a few years. Unfortunately people do often grow apart, and lets face it...hollywood doesn't exactly promote healthy marriages.

To Each Their Own

A former associate/friend of mine was previously employed by Avjet Corporation (Charter Airline Corporation) in Burbank California; she told me that Robyn Gibson was very demanding, arogant, used bad language, and complained quite a bit. (What a good Catholic she makes, don't you think?) I have no doubts about what my friend told me because she is one of the most patient, calm people I know, plus the fact that she has good people skills, and it would take a lot for her to sit in judgement or criticize someone. And good old Mel, well, what a great guy he his....not! No explanations need, his recent antics and reputation speak for themselves. A reflection of his Father, which must make him very proud! And dear old Dad, well, what can you say about Pop, huh? He left the USA with his brood of 11, to ensure that his oldest (and those following) wouldn't be drafted. But they came back to at just the right time..to cash in on Mel's booming career, here in the good US of A!

>>That's okay, I hate Mel Gibson and ignorant f**kwits like you. By the way, at last count, Jews only made up 10% of the Hollywood entertainment industry. So if people didn't want to see The Passion of the Mel, it was those anti-religious nut jobs you should be identifying in your "modern day Sanhedrin."

A little advice for Robyn, go out with a Jew, that would really twist Mel's panties in a bunch.

It must be horrible to be married to philandering neo-nazi. My sincere best wishes to the soon to be ex-Mrs. Mel Gibson. Take him for all you can get - you;re entitled to after 28 years and all those children.

Former Movie Publicist

I worked for MGM/UA and handled Mel's publicity during 1982-1983 when the studio thought THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY was going to make him a major star. I spent a week with Mel in NYC before the movie started filming; a year later, he came back to New York for the opening and this time he brought his wife Robyn with him. They were a lovely, devoted young couple and showed me pictures of their children. Mel was a sweet, modest, down-to-earth guy, and everyone at the studio (and the media) loved him. But people change over time, especially when celebrity is thrust upon them, and I'm saddened to hear Mel & Robyn are divorcing.
