I am not the kind of guy to follow celebrity gossip. Personally, celebrity gossip and the entire industry it spawns of tabloid television, print media, paparazzi, and sleazy journalism disgusts me to the core of my existence. I don’t care what fashion trend is hot, what status Lindsay Lohan’s relationship is in, what Suri Cruise’s new toy is, or what is the new hot trendy restaurant in LA and who is eating there. I don’t care. I have real world personal issues and problems I am dealing with on a daily basis. You give me what any top Hollywood actor makes for one film and I would never have to work another day in my life and 99% of my personal problems would disappear over night. I don’t have time to care about what some Hollywood duesh bag has got going on in their lives. I’m so sorry that in your celebrity trailer they only have Evian bottled water and not Fuji bottle water. Sorry that you tried to kill yourself Owen Wilson, but my check book balance is probably 1/100000 of yours, I don’t have your personal resources, and I am getting along just fine in this life.

But today is different. Today Mel Gibson’s wife Robyn Gibson filed for divorce. Now normally a celebrity divorce does not phase or shock me at all. We all know 50% of all marriages end in divorce, 75% of all second marriages end in divorce. Celebrities are no different. They probably buck the trend and their rate of divorce is probably like 85% for the first marriage alone. (Anybody want to bet when Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are going to get divorced? I will give 7:2 odds it will be within the next year.) This should not be a shocker to any of us. What the shocker is how this divorce is being handled.

Mel Gibson’s estimated value is 900 million dollars. In today’s world that may not sound like much due to how the government is throwing around billions of dollars daily on bail outs to the banks, car manufacturers, and any other industry that seems to be slumping, but to us normal folks in everyday dollars that is more money than we would make in our entire lifetime multiplied by 900.

Now I don’t have a problem with divorce, what I have a problem with is how these two are going at it. Already Robyn Gibson is asking for parental custody, jewelry, land holdings, spousal support, child support, and paying of legal fees. Wait one minute. You live in LA, California. Barring some type of iron clad prenuptial agreement (Which I have not heard exists in this marriage and we are talking that this prenuptial would have to be more iron clad that Iron Man), Robyn Gibson is probably going to get 450 million dollars of this 900 million estate. So I must ask, why the does she need to have child support and spousal support paid to her? If I had 450 million dollars in various assets I would not need anything from anybody. I wouldn’t need monthly payments for child support or spousal support if I had 450 million in various assets.

But I am not blaming Robyn either. Mel is to be blamed equally. Mel, you have 900 million dollars, now all of a sudden you have 450 million instead. Really, how does this really decrease your standard of living? Please explain this to me. How is your standard of living going to decrease at all? Is it going to be harder for you to retire on 450 million instead of 900 million. Please explain to me, the working class, how this will decrease your quality of life.

If anything, Mel should walk into court tomorrow and say, “Yes our marriage is over she can have half my stuff.” That would end it quick and clean. It would remove years of legal battles in which lawyers are going to probably take 30% of his estate due to legal fees, put a huge strain on the already burdened legal system, and not to mention giving the tabloid media years of press coverage and media scrutiny of his every move. Instead Mel is going to tear this marriage apart like a scabbed over bandage; slow and painfully.

Not to mention the most horrible truth. Right now almost every American (who is worth less than 900 million dollars) is going through horrible financial times. We are struggling to make ends meet. We are facing lay offs, pay cuts, rising insurance premiums, increased prices on fuel and food, and facing an economic slow down that has not been seen since the 1930’s. But at the end of every day we are going to go home, turn on the TV, and see these two clowns fighting over every penny of 900 million dollars. This is going to be a tough pill to swallow.

So Mel, I ask you, no I urge you, for the sake of your career, please put this problem to rest before it destroys you and ends our celluloid relationship. Because if this divorce drags out over years and you are fighting over an amount that would take me 900 lifetimes to earn, I don’t think I could bear to watch you in any more films.

110. I agree with #11...the Catholicism angle alone means this thing is going to get ugly real soon. No matter how civil and considerate they want to be in this, the reality of divorce is another thing entirely. Good intentions get you screwed, not in a good way.

I like Mel Gibson as an actor.I'm pretty sure both he and his wife are going through tough times right now.Divorce is not fun,especially when children are involved and they have been together for such a long time.NOBODY here knows what actually happened......so NOBODY has any right to judge.People many times act like they have never done anything wrong and are so quick to judge anyone without even knowing them or the facts.Maybe Mel's wife is with someone, maybe not,maybe Mel did not cheat,maybe he did-WHO knows?I simply only saw a picture of Mel giving a hug to a young woman.I hug people also-does not mean I sleep with them.
I wish Mel and his wife the best and who knows maybe they can work it out between them still.
