The life of Phil Spector is one of countless tragedies. The first and foremost, being the senseless murder of Lana Clarkson, a star-crossed woman in the wrong place at the wrong time. Secondly is, of course, the tragedy of mental illness. And, ever-more common-place, is what can become the tragic consequences of the over-inflated egos and influences of the rich and powerful. I first learned of secrets being hidden behind the gates of Spector’s castle many years ago, in an article published in the Rolling Stone, if I’m not mistaken. It told of his child or children being kept behind locked doors while Spector carried on throughout the night with his other “chosen captives”. Basically, to me, it was a tale of terror. It was my first glimpse of the demons that possessed a man I once idolized as a true genius in the recording industry. I’m sure, that on more than one occasion, throughout the many years of “Dr. Phil’s” rantings and ravings, he was advised to seek help with his demons. I’m just as sure that his over-inflated ego kept him from seeing the insanity of his ways and from seeking much needed psychological help. I’ve also almost got to believe that Ms. Clarkson was probably not the first to meet and un-timely death at his hands. I’m sure that there have been countless cover-ups, known only to a select few. People bought and sold, if not by wealth, then by the power and influence of Spector’s fame. Undoubtedly, his wealth influenced at least one juror during his first trial and bought him an additional six months of debauchery. I’m also sure that his ego kept him from allowing a plea of “not guilty, due to the reason of insanity.” The later, a blessing for the poor souls who suffered at this madman’s hands. A life, and lives, undone by mental illness, coupled with the excesses of wealth, power and influence. Truly a “Hollywood” story…. coming soon to a theater near you!!!!

Spector the piece of Sh_t should have been in jail years ago and if it hadn't been for some IDIOT Engineer that convinced another woman on the last jury to hold out with him to set Spector free because he could not have done it according to his engineering computations. What a piece of Sh_t all three of them turned out to be. Spector is long overdue for what he has done to women over the years just because he has money and a music industry. Long live Spector in jail.

What a strange trip this has been...... From top of the world to being sentenced to jail for murder. To me its all quite depressing. Phil Spector for every sense of the word was a musical genius. His 'Wall of Sound' for which he created is one the most important parts in Pop Music History. He deserves to be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame as much as anyone there for which he is. But for years he has been on that downward spiral from genius to someone who seems to most as 'mad'. Maybe the space between genius and madman is closer than we think. I don't blame others here for dissing Spector for the crime hes been found guilty of by a court of law, but to those of us who appreciates all the good he did in this world its a surreal kind of day. Sad, yet mind-boggling. If a man is guilty he deserves his verdict and needs to pay for his crime. Still though its painful to see someone fall from such heights.
So many celebrities have gotten away with murder or unlawful misconduct....... some see this as a way to rejoice that finally one has been found guilty. I can understand that but I for one still find it uneasy to feel good about this whole event. But I guess on the other hand the family and friends of Lana Clarkson do feel justice and are rejoicing that the verdict went down today as it did.
Its just a sad closing chapter to someone who was once considered "Great". His strange, seclusive, isolated, mad, gun loving and eccentric life has come to an end. The mind & man behind such such classic music has found his closure and there is no encore.

I agree with your comment Delta Bluesman, a very surreal day indeed. Everyone should pay for their crimes. But as a musician and fan of music it is a bit sad. The downfall of a music legend. Perhaps mad, but a musical genius nevertheless.

Well, friends and family always want to blame someone. Sad to see that someone blew their brains out in his home and this jury found him liable, just as if she had slipped and hurt her back. What was he supposed to do? Try to take a gun from a mentally unstable woman? Would you? This society has gone to f.....n hell, kitty kats. You can be blamed and put away for damn near anything.

To #112 taylorbee
I agree. Phil Spector is a musical genius. Many people out there are probably listening to music that Spector wrote, produced or created in some way and not know it. We all put celebrities in a world to themselves and think that they are above and beyond the things that normal everyday people do but sad to say they are just like us in many respects. They are human too and do make mistakes. Sad to see this happen to Phil Spector. He is a great legend and to see it all end this way really makes me sad. I am not condoning murder but it is sad to see that he will be remembered for this murder and not what he has done musically.

I remember in the seventies when there were shocking reports of Spector being abusive to his wife, Ronnie. He just sharpened his woman-hating skills all these years until they got so out of control that he killed Lana. May this little hothead get life in prison and his gold-digging wifey get absolutely nothing, since the appeals and other fees are going to totally drain out what's left of his money. Then, she will be all alone with nothing but memories of being married to a madman, with a bunch of clothes that went out of style and no money to replace them with. Boo freakin' hoo. No waving at the cameras now, huh Rochelle? Rest in peace, Lana. What goes around, came around and Spectors are now paying the piper.

I can't believe this dangerous misogynist has the gall to appeal.

At least he is now off the streets and away from women.

Here's a few facts about his marriage to Ronnie:
On the morning after marrying Phil, Ronnie looked outside and two men were putting barbed wire and gates around the mansion. From that moment on her family and friends were barred from visiting the home. During one spell she was granted permission to leave but once a year on their wedding anniversary. She wanted to leave but there was barbed wire and dogs and she didn't know how.
Phil's paranoia was legend. He once insisted that Ronnie always place an inflatable life size model of himself in the back seat of the car while she drove around Los Angeles. He also wouldn't let Ronnie see her kids after they divorced.
But the strangest thing Ronnie ever said was after he was arrested. She said, "I had never seen him violent like that, with a gun or anything. I don't think he would do anything like this." When reminded by a reporter of her previous court testimony that her ex-husband had once tried to kill her, she added " Not personally, though, that was a hit man."
