Stupid people who are circling Michael Phelps as if he's washed up. So, he lost the backstroke to Aaron Peirsol yesterday at the North Carolina meet. But here's the deal -- the backstroke is not his thing -- he didn't even compete in the backstroke in the Olympics.
P.S. he won the 200m freestyle and the 100m butterfly at the N.C. meet ... cynics!
46. #32: It's called a kickboard and is used for training purposes to focus on just the kick and body position in the water. People that don't understand swimming and the components of the sport need to stop trying to "call him out" because it's making you look silly. Also, who cares if he's not attractive or a good public speaker? He's an ATHLETE. Have you heard/seen half the players in the NFL and NBA? Lay off the kid! And, so what if he came in 2nd on a few races? It happens in swimming! Some days you're on and some days the person you're racing is on...that's what makes it an exciting sport! And, placing 2nd is a huge difference than "losing." Swimmers compete against other swimmers as well as the clock, it's not always about coming in 1st. Sorry for the mini rant, I've been involved in swimming for 19 years and it's frustrating to hear people bash on a phenomenal swimmer that has finally brought the sport to a more prominent position in America for silly things such as his looks and speech. 49. Phelps didn't lose the race because he's off his game, he lost the race because Piersol has been and continues to be the BEST BACKSTROKER IN THE WORLD. Yes, Phelps is a phenomenal swimmer, but USA Swimming has MANY phenomenal swimmers, Aaron Piersol being one of them. Sad that so much publicity is surrounding Phelps now because he lost a race and everyone is wondering what's wrong with him..but no one is praising Aaron for continuing to dominate.

51. So I haven't read all the comments, but Michael is actually very strong in the backstroke. That's not to say that he should feel bad for losing to Aaron Peirsol who is solely a backstroker, but he did place second at the Olympic Trials in 2004 for the 200m back. So it's not like this is completely new and foreign for him. But again, Aaron's a backstroker, who's first loss in that race in like 7 years was at the 2008 Olympics.
