Brandy Settles Fatal Car Crash with Victim's Kids

Brandy We've learned Brandy has just reached a settlement with the kids whose mother died in the singer's 2006 car crash.

Awatef Aboudihaj's two children will receive a total of $600,000 -- $300,000 each -- according to court documents filed in L.A. County Superior Court moments ago.

Aboudihaj died in 2006 after her car was struck by Brandy's Range Rover near the interchange of the 405 and 101 freeways in Los Angeles.

Her husband, Marouane Hdidou -- who has yet to settle with Brandy -- rejected his part of a $1.2 million settlement offer in February.

61. 4. $300,000. each and the lawyer will get 90% of that ... not enough!

Posted at 1:02PM on Jun 2nd 2009 by scarlett

Exactly! Lawyer gets 1/3rd usually, but then charges you "costs" that make the lawyer's total take more like 50 percent. In this case those costs are no doubt significantly higher since Brandi spent 3 years litigating this with the best lawyers. Think if Brandi had given the kids the money that's going to her lawyers and theirs? THAT might have been the decent thing to do.

62. The Husband rejecting 1.2 mil just shows he's out for a payday. I hope he gets nothing!

1.2 million minus at the very minimum half for the attorney fees plus costs. I had a settlement that did NOT go to trial (so no trial costs) and the attorneys plus their fees were more than 50 percent. However, you still have to pay taxes on the total settlement. So he has to pay taxes on the 1.2 mill, out of the 500K he'll probably get after attorneys and costs. That means the dad will come out with about 200K. And he has to support his kids for the rest of his life without his wife's income. I'll bet in her lifetime she'd have earned more than 200K. He isn't exactly getting rich on that amount.

Nope.
1.2 million
minus taxes of around $400K
minus attorney's fees plus costs totally roughly 50% or 600K
leaves the dad with around 200K.

That 200K is supposed to make up for what his wife would have earned the entire rest of her life, as well
as any insurance benefits his wife's employment would have provided for their kids for the rest of her life.
If she'd lived to be average age for her race in America, that means compensating Dad as if mom would have made
$29K per year for the rest of her life. And that doesn't even begin to cover the loss of the wife's employer paid medical insurance for the kids, which can be $800 per month for a family in my state.
Dad is far from coming out ahead on losing his wife's life-long earnings and benefits potential.

64. 53. She wasn't drunk, and as far as the whole talking on the phone thing goes, everyone does it. Everyone. Maybe not all the time, but everyone has done it. So that isn't just some "stupid celebrity thing" Bottom line is, this could have happened to anyone. Brandy was in the wrong place at the wrong time and now she is paying the price. But she doesn't deserve to be called a murderer. It was an accident. A terrible one, but an accident none the less.

Posted at 2:38PM on Jun 2nd 2009 by elliemarie

Elliemarie - by that amazingly faulty logic I should be able to drive drunk and kill your mother, and have no consequences other than my insurance paying a pittance. I mean hell, everyone does it, right? Everyone has driven buzzed, right? Thus no one should pay when it causes a death. That's your baffling logic. Everyone does not talk on their phone, become distracted, speed and kill someone with their car. Those who do should be punished. Brandi should have done jail time and she should have to pay the family's legal costs as well as the settlement. Just as YOU would have to do if YOU were reckless in your car and killed someone.

The "everyone does it" defense is simply mind boggling. Keep it in mind when someone harms you or your family by being negligent and reckless. I'm sure it will be great comfort.

65. All the talk some of you guys are saying jail or money can't soothe the pain of Awatef Aboudihaj's family members. It was just an unfortunate accident.

66. I believe that there's more to this story. I read that it was the mother's fault too. Somebody else in the accident *A third party* explained that it was Awatef Aboudiha's fault too. It just sucks for Brandy cause she's a celebrity and the blame is on her and she has to deal with the crap and the media. I'm not excuses the fact of what she did but people might be blowing it out of proportion just because she's a celebrity, Brandy, I love you girl, but what's done is done and you paid your dues and money won't bring back an innocents life.

68. If people would go back to the initial articles...we would see that Brandy was not at fault. There was a key witness saying that Awatef Aboudihaj hit the back of Donald Lite's car which then in turn caused Brandy to hit the both of them. If anything, Brandy should be the one going after Aboudihaj (family) and Lite. They were the ones disobeying the laws of the road; not her. It was also shown in the police reports that when they performed an autopsy on Aboudihaj body, they found traces of marijuana in her system.

So in conclusion, the Aboudihaj Family is out for money. The settlement offer between Marouane Hdidou (the husband) and Brandy's camp was rejected. Marouane Hdidou lawyers were furious he rejected the claim and left him because he would not listen to reason. He would of gotten a piece of the 1.2 million dollar offer.

At least the two kids are hip to reality and know this is the best offer they are gonna get and took it.

Donald Lite was also going after Brandy and Aboudihaj Family for the accident as well. What the amount was is still yet to be determined.

70. omg.lmao.lol#7..that's mean.lollol

71. BRANDY SHOULD BE IN PRISON !!! She makes me sick. Her and Rebecca Gayheart. KILLERS. Dumb ho's spending too much time texting or putting on their mascara and not paying attention to other cars. This makes me so angry. Honestly, I wish Brandy and Rebecca would have been paralyzed. THAT would be justice for killing.

Posted at 5:24PM on Jun 2nd 2009 by Dang it this really makes me mad

72. Brandy killed Awatef Aboudihaj. She was then able to use her fame and fortune to keep herself from going to prison. Brandy will always have her talent and her fame. But after keeping herself out of prison, she should have given all of her fortune at the time, every last penny to the children and husband of the woman.
That is fair and her husband knows this.

73. It's a shame she messed up and killed someone. It could have been avoided by watching her speed and keeping focused. I cannot see how she didn't see the vehicle unless she was either on her cell yapping away or doing her nails or something distracting. For this I have little sympathy for her, sorry.

74. If you have ever driven the 405 in LA then you know what an incredibly scary and dangerous road that is! I can see how accidents happen on it all the time. I've been all over the US and that's the WORST road I've been on. I live in NJ.

75. It's sad that this woman lost her life. Brandie, was found not guilty, she wasn't under the influence nor was she speeding. This man wants money and is very greedy, his children got paid and honestly I think thats enough. GOD BLESS THAT WOMAN AND HER CHILDREN. No amount of money will bring her back, let her rest in peace.
