Second Autopsy Critical in Carradine Death

David CarradineSources tell TMZ the second autopsy of David Carradine's body will be conducted in a matter of days, and two issues are on the line -- cause of death and life insurance.

As for cause of death, here's what we're hearing ... if this is truly a case of auto-erotica, typically people who do this will put a cloth or something between the neck and the skin to avoid marks that would be difficult to explain. There's a picture that was published in a Thai newspaper showing the body hanging. We will not publish it, but we do not see evidence of anything between the neck and rope. To the contrary, the photo shows redness in the right shoulder area, next to the neck.

Another issue -- if this is truly a case of auto-erotica, generally there would be a magazine, video or something of a sexual nature within eyeshot to stimulate arousal. If nothing like that is around, it's suspicious. The photo does not show any obvious signs of sexual material in the area, however there appears to be something that looks like some sort of picture that may have been taped on the wall. We can't see exactly what it is.

Also -- the notion behind auto-erotica is that oxygen is restricted to heighten orgasm, but the subject generally has a ladder, stool or something like it to restore oxygen. The photo does not show a ladder or stool, but the body is almost in a sitting position. We do not know if any items were moved before the picture was taken.

One of the biggest mysteries -- the photo in the Thai newspaper shows that Carradine's hands are tied above his head (which we reported Friday), yet Thai police say no one was with him in the room. The question -- how's that possible?

As for the second autopsy, it's often harder to determine cause of death because the body has already been through a procedure, but the advantage of the second autopsy is that there's more info and, as one source put it, "you can be more focused in terms of what the issues are."

David CarradineNow, as for life insurance -- most policies provide that the policy is void if the cause of death is suicide, but if it's an accidental death insurance companies are not only required to pay out ... some policies provide that the beneficiaries get twice the payout.

Short story .. a lot will be riding on the second autopsy.

18.

TMZ's posting is full of conjecture that sounds like it came from a junior high lunch room. People who are seasoned at auto-erotica do NOT "typically" or "generally" have any sort of pornography around. Not seeing sexual reading material does NOT make it suspicious. Secondly, they don't need a stool either. They often tie a tether to their wrists in such a way as to be able to quickly undo the tightness by using their wrists.

All TMZ is doing is sitting around in their nasty offices with a box of donuts and gossiping amongst themselves and then posting it as if it has some sort of researched validity. I did not look at the picture, but from the posts who said that they did, it doesn't sound like TMZ was even in a position to notice whether there was something between the rope and the skin on the neck.

Leave the subject alone, TMZ. You don't have anything new or even knowledgeable to add.

19. A friend of mine and I have been talking about this... we think he probably hired a hooker, who would have tied him up and also acted as the sexual arousal... about the lack of a cloth around the neck, we're not sure about that.

20. YOU can see the hanging photo on utube. its apparent his hands are "way" tied above his head. the lower half of his body is purple from the blood pooling downward. -- just because the police say he was alone in his room; doesn't mean he was; i mean anyone can lock the door when they leave. right? anyway, i don't see how he could tie his hands that way and also hang himself. it seems odd. remember................thailand has lots of tourism -- and some of it is for cheap sex; they don't want people to be afraid a sex worker is going to kill them (read: bad for tourism $$$); or they won't visit and spend their american dollars there/and euro's too. the police have this reason to make it look like there was no foul play.

21. How can a second autopsy done in the U.S. by a "for hire" forensics expert be "critical". The Thai investigators will make their own determination of the circumstances surrounding the death. From what I've read it appears that Mr. Carradine tried a risky action and took it a bit too far, paying a price for his actions. Once source said that there may be two motives behind the family's actions: 1. That his killing himself doing kinky sex solo is humiliating to the survivors, and 2, If his death is ruled a suicide, they'll play hell getting a life insurance company to pay off. I doubt that Mr.,Geragos will be able to sue the Thai government in the first place. Getting a suicide finding overturned in order to collect on insurance will make an interesting case, especially if the family insists on a finding of "foul play" in order to collect on double indemnity.

23. tmz, you are not being considerate or noble by stating that you will not publish the picture, you are simply covering your collective asses so you don't get prosecuted! if you thought for a second you could get away with publishing it you would!

so please, don't try to come across as something you are not...you are not scrupulous or noble.

get a grip!!!

25. TMZ you have some wrong info. Most people engaging in AutoErotic Asphixiation do NOT use a stool or ladder.. most if using hanging 'feel' they are safe becaue the noose is shorter than they are standing up.. this way they can just bend their knees or squat a bit to get the rush. They falsely feel they are safe from hanging because they can 'stand up' at any time, sad part is once you pass out there is no 'standing up'. Many even die from this sitting down using things like a towel bar or bed headboard or even a door knob, they just lean forward thinking if they pass out they are sitting so even safer right? Wrong.. the weight of your head will still cause you to suffocate against the rope. Sadly this happens alot with younger people thinking it's the safest way to experiement. It's not. As for a cloth being used.. wrong again. Especially someone who has been engaging in this activity for awhile they know what sort of material and what sort of 'pressure' will or won't leave a mark. The statement that he used a curtain cord makes sense because they are usually of a soft material.

As for the hands tied over his head.. I just don't know. Maybe he had some safety idea that if he started to black out he could hook the rope on his hands to something, thus keeping him from hanging himself? You can't really tell much from the picture but if there is a distance in the rope on his wrists I'd bet it's something like that.

26. I've done studies on auto-erotica for school (I'm a criminal justice major) and had a teacher who worked homicide for a local PD and there is a chance that this really was an accident. Before he would have placed the rope around his neck, he could have tired his hands using various methods that maybe the Thai police weren't aware of. TMZ said that the pictures they viewed had him in a somewhat sitting position, and from everything I've learned about accidental deaths resulting from auto-erotica, this is THE most common way people accidentally die. They think they have enough time and proper leverage to push themselves back up to regain enough oxygen but the fact of the matter is they don't. This is a truly tragic story no matter the outcome!!

27. The notion that life insurance policies don't pay out for suicide is not correct; there is usually a 2-year waiting period (although sometimes shorter or longer depending upon the policy itself. That's only in place to prevent suicidal people from buying a policy and then offing themselves for the payout to family. The only problem here would be if he purchased a life insurance policy recently. How do I know this? I work for a life insurance company.

28. #11 is right. Suicide generally negates a policy only during the first two years.
Also, TMZ would do well to responsibly remind its readers that "auto erotica" frequently results in unintended death. I know of two teenagers who have died from this practice. No orgasm is worth your life.

29. Thanks TMZ for stating the facts! We dont know what happened 2 this wonderful man. And,as pointed out by many, how is it possible 2 kill yourself w your hands tied above your head or behind your back? There are plenty of other stories 2 cover while the truth comes 2 light. One thing we do know? It's tragic.

30. This guy always seemed odd and spooky to me. Just his looks along were scary.
It probably went too far, and he died by accident. The person who tied him up needs to be found and held for involuntary manslaugter.
