Becoming a Man -- The Process

Chastity BonoA lot is involved in the sex reassignment process. Here's the lowdown, according to Dr. Gary Alter from "Dr. 90210" -- he's an expert. Here's what Chastity Bono is going through right now.

-- First step ... A psychiatrist evaluates the patient. If appropriate, the doctor prescribes male hormones.

-- The hormones change the body makeup, which includes hair growth. The clitoris also grows larger.

-- Removal of breasts. Dr. Alter said most states will recognize the person as a male once this occurs. A hysterectomy can also be performed during this process.

-- Dr. Alter said the decision about changing the genitalia can take several years, while the patient is taking hormones. Dr. Alter says most people stop at this point.

-- Dr. Alter says if the patient goes forward, the surgeon often makes a small penis out of the clitoris and a scrotum by joining both labia majors. Testicle implants can then be inserted. The most sophisticated option is microsurgery in which skin, arteries and nerves are taken from the forearm and made into a phallus.

As for cost, Dr. Alter said it's all over the place, depending on how far the person wants to go. We've spoken to people who have had it done, and they say the full deal costs more than $100,000.

46. The age of the subject doesn`t make it plausible sHE should just run with what she`s got and get some help>it`s understandable at some levels but on other points it seems unrealistic. She wants some attention and doe`snt know how to get it.IF she must man up she will be a mutulated walking wounded and I don`t think she be happy there either.Want the life you have Don`t want something you can`t have

47. I think Chastity is sick in the head and needs psychiatric help for her mental problems.

48. Okay, if she keeps her vagina and has a monthly cycle and a small penis, what will this accomplish? The penis will not work like a mans, and she cannot ejaculate, they just use implants to create balls, like a woamn who has her breasts enlarged. I am not understanding how this will make her feel normal, if she keeps her vagina. The male hormones, may affect her cycles some, but those things are harsh, so not getting the point.

49. Price can be as high as a hundred grand? I'd think twice, but maybe Chaz can afford it. Otherwise, someone may offer to do it "pro Bono."

50. I believe gay people are born that way, but they don't need to have what they want to do with themselves be publicly known, even if SHE does have famous parents. To me it's a sad commentary on the state of our society, but I think it should be kept private unless SHE wants it to be known. Just thought I'd express my take on the situation.

51. w.t.f. another whack job looking for publicity because they have no marketable skills- need to somehow stay relevant-b.s.

52. Whilst I understand that some people feel uncomfortable with their gender, shouldn't we help them accept who they are rather than support the mutilation of their bodies? Like what if a white man felt black or what if a 40 year old felt that they were truly a 10 year old? Don't we at all times feel like we should have been something else? Surgery is not the answer!!!

me: That is what im saying. I support her choice to be gay, its not about that, i just don't like the idea of surgery to change who a person is. Surgery may look easy but it takes a lot more emotional effort as well as physical to heal im sure.... Seriously, ellen & rosie didn't need to do sex changes & people support them. Its just weird she decides to do this now at 40. The older you get, the harder surgery can be for someone. Its a huge risk. And i sure wouldn't want to be castrated *which is basically what she is doing*

55. As hard as this is for me to comprehend, I don't feel it is my place to judge. On the other hand, I find it odd that this is legal, but two taxpaying consenting adults of the same gender can't get married?!

56. Chastity, good luck and hope you will be very happy. What a lot of
ignorant people don't stop to realize is, yes this is REAL. People
are born feeling as if they are in the wrong bodies. Who would just
CHOOSE that sort of personal hell ? No one. They are STUCK with it.
So people need to shut ,get a little compassion and try to imagine
what it's like. If you're a male, what would you feel like if
tomorrow you woke up but you were suddenly a woman ? Except in your
brain, you felt 100% as if you were still a man ? And vice
versa...any women out there, imagine waking up looking male but not
feeling male. And sex change people pretty much know they are
different from childhood on. It's hell, so quit acting as if they do
it because they want to be "weird" or that they give want to offend
"normal" people. Personally, I'm straight. But I have a family member
who is like Chastity. And I know what what they suffer through.
Problem with much of this world is, not enough people appreciate the
differences we have, or how much we really are alike {just wanting to
be happy and have a life... } and they don't stop to try to
understand.

57. there's a lot more to gender-identity than what is or isn't dangling between your legs. as the doctor stated, there are many trangendered people who do not alter their genitals at all and we don't know, nor is it really any of our business, what chaz plans to do. we all deserve to find out what makes us happy and to go for it regardless of what anybody else thinks.

58. Good grief...I don't care how she mutilates the gift God and her mother gave her...she still a girl...messed up as she may be...God intended her to be a girl...otherwise she'd be a boy. I did not think God made mistakes...ok...it may appear so...but in hind site...it is probably a test, and she failed.

59. I think this is really dumb. It's as if God made a mistake making her a woman.
