Cher -- I Support Chaz's Transition

Cher & ChazCher has made her first statement regarding her daughter's decision to become a man.

She tells PEOPLE: "Chaz is embarking on a difficult journey, but one that I will support. I respect the courage it takes to go through this transition in the glare of public scrutiny, and although I may not understand, I will strive to be understanding ... The one thing that will never change is my abiding love for my child."

As TMZ first reported, Cher has known about Chaz's decision for a year.

77. Don't worry. Cher will still be parading around almost naked after this is over. I am so sick of seeing her doing that. I feel bad for Chastity. I really do. The mother almost 65 and prancing around like she is 18. Something is very very wrong there. She wants that attention. She is so fake it makes me want to throw up. If I could Chastity I would try to talk you out of this sweetie. You are a beautiful soul. I wish you happiness in whatever you want to do. God Bless.

79. too bad people have to be so judgemental, and I am possitive Cher and Chaz need no sympathy from any of you!
The most wonderful thing about living in the Good 'ol US of A is that we have the FREEDOM and ABILITY to make decisions for ourselves, and we have the FREEDOM of CHOICE!!
Thank our Military men and women for that, and say a prayer for yourselves to be more forgiving of what others do!
AMEN!

A publication from the American Psychological Association includes an admission that there is no "gay" gene, according to a doctor who has written about the issue on the website of National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality.

A. Dean Byrd, the past president of NARTH, confirmed that the statement from the American Psychological Association came in a brochure that updates what the APA has advocated for years.

Specifically, in a brochure that first came out about 1998, the APA stated: "There is considerable recent evidence to suggest that biology, including genetic or inborn hormonal factors, play a significant role in a person's sexuality."

However, in the update: a brochure now called, "Answers to Your Questions for a Better Understanding of Sexual Orientation & Homosexuality," the APA's position changed.

The new statement says:

"There is no consensus among scientists about the exact reasons that an individual develops a heterosexual, bisexual, gay or lesbian orientation. Although much research has examined the possible genetic, hormonal, developmental, social, and cultural influences on sexual orientation, no findings have emerged that permit scientists to conclude that sexual orientation is determined by any particular factor or factors. Many think that nature and nurture both play complex roles. ..."

83. No one in my family is gay, or transgendered yet I believe in 25 years from now we will accept from a scientific certainty that true gender reassessment & sexual orientation ARE biological. This is proven today; via chemicals in the womb, cellular division, pet scans, & the study that examined the brains of gay men and straight women. Scientists discovered the brains of gay men are more like women’s brains than straight men’s. This finding points to another study that shows a definite connection between sexual orientation & biology. With doctrines & our immaturity to the word “sex” the populace has YET come to terms with such scientific facts. Look to history to see other scientific facts rejected by the church hence the masses such as the world was flat & evolution... still debated today. I understand there has to be trailblazers when new scientific facts are being presented BUT my heart goes out to ALL that must struggle with such issues as the world waits to catch up.

87. According to the state of California, cutting off your tits and having your clit shaped into a penis can grant you rights to marry the same sex. Chastity Bono, a.k.a Chaz, has just completed the necessary steps to legally marry a girl.
Somewhere near a tree, Sonny is trying to roll over.
I feel sorry for the ignorance, distaste and unnatural choice.

88. #60: Cher had two failed marriages and 11 boyfriends while "Chaz" grew up. At least 3 lived with the child in the home. She was a huge and outspoken advocate for gay rights. Sonny married twice.....once from 1981-1984 and again in 1986 until his death in 1998. He was Mayor of Palm Springs and US Representative......a bit of a difference.

89. I'm sure the family and friends aren't wasting their time reading the horrible comments people are leaving here - at least I hope not. You all should educate yourself and try to be more loving of your fellow people than this. Do you think he did not try for years to get past this? He did not possibly go to God for help with this? That he did not want it to be different, too? This is who he is, this is what he must do to simply be who he is and live happily. He has always been a boy. But nobody here can understand that. But I guess in a way that's okay - you don't need to. This is HIS experience. It just disgusts and angers me to see such close-minded, ignorant people who are also arrogant enough to think they should have any say in what he is going through.

My best wishes to go Chaz and his family during this change. And thank you TMZ for the respectful coverage here, despite what so many of your bigoted readers are saying. You all should be ashamed of yourselves.
