46. Yes, anal cancer IS attributable to anal sex, just as cervical cancer is sexually transmitted through exposure to the HPV virus. Look it up. I'm not saying that Farrah deserves to die, and frankly, when she was exposed there was no Gardasil and HPV wasn't as widely known as HIV etc.so there wasn't much she could have done anyway. But anal cancer is usually caught from sexual activity.

47. Maybe she did get anal cancer from the HPV virus -- and lots of people die every day from diseases that are created and/or exacerbated by smoking, or by eating a diet heavy in animal products (which is just about everyone consuming the traditional American diet), or consuming too much alcohol which can encourage a whole host of cancers -- can we just, for a minute, focus on the fact that she was a lovely lady and a popular actress with many people who are sorry for her suffering and wish her peace after so much suffering???

49. It's ludicrous to go around saying that Farrah is dying because of anal sex. That is like saying everyone with lung cancer got it because they were smokers, which is completely untrue. While I applaud attempts to educate the public on HPV and so on, it's ridiculous for some to come on here and diagnose Farrah. You are not one of her doctors and you've never shared any part of your life with her other than admiring her on TV. Having said this, just let it be that Farrah has terminal cancer and it happened because sometimes bad things happen to good people, even angels.

50. Is Ryan O'Neal still trying to get her to marry him even though she might be able to only nod her head?

52. God bless your soul Farrah. You are an Angel and an INSPIRATION.
I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER!

The insensitive jerks who are now writing about anal sex and the reasons ones get it should watch out. You may get it too for having awful karma.

53. BTW i doubt farrah got cancer from having anal sex!!!!! WHILE yes, some strains of HPV do cause cervical cancer (but even if you use a condom, hpv can spread...its a very very very common STD), i haven't heard anything about it causing anal cancer!!..especially in her case, i doubt it. Anal cancer can be caused from other things. Maybe she had cancer somewhere else like the colon that spread or something. We don't know how it started. So its rude to make crude comments like that!!!

55. What is wrong with some people? Farrah has the rare anal Cancer. No one has said she has HPV or HIV/AIDs and it was not caused by ANY kind of sex. No wonder people are in denial and wait too late to get care when people are assuming all kinds of nasty stuff. Let the lady die in peace!

57. Thank you Jenny..maybe her cancer was from anal sex, maybe not -- prett much all Americans do lots of things that put themselves at risk for one kind of cancer or another (drinking, smoking, eating a diet that's loaded with animal products, filling their environments with all kinds of chemicals that the human body was never meant to process, etc, etc, etc, etc,). For now can we just focus on the fact that she has millions of fans who are sorry for her suffering and wish her peace?? I for one will never forget watching her in "The Burning Bed", a great performance that enlightened many people about domestic violence.

58. You people writing about what brought on her disease are truly the sick ones. Will you write such sick things when your loved ones are diagnosed???????

Sick people!

59. #8: 85% of anal cancer patients got it from getting HPV. But that means 15% did not. Since over 5000 people get diagnosed with it every single year, that means over 700 did NOT have HPV. Also, wearing a condom by no means prevents the spread of HPV. Roughly 30% of the time its still passed from person to person, there just isnt enough skin protection to fully prevent the spread. This is exactly why the disease is so common. The only way to prevent HPV is complete and total abstinence, not even a simple kiss, and both people have to have lived that way to be 100% sure they wont get it. Not great odds- Its estimated roughly 75% of the sexually active population has it, whether they know it not.

Bottom line, dont be so harsh.

60. -Not saying Farrah does have HPV .. but it is indeed associated with not only cervical cancer but anal and throat cancer as well.

From WebMD -

While anal cancer is far less common than breast cancer—1 in 640 women will be diagnosed during their lifetime, compared with 1 in 8 with breast cancer—only about half of anal cancers are detected in their earliest stage, when they're most treatable. Partly for this reason, only about 67 percent of people diagnosed with anal cancer survive five or more years.

There are, though, several ways women can protect themselves, says Johnson. Younger women can get the Gardasil vaccine, which is approved for those up to age 27. By blocking the transmission of two common cancer-causing HPV strains, she says, the vaccine presumably protects against anal cancers, throat cancers, and oral cancers that are associated with HPV infections.

"The HPV virus associated with cervical cancer is also associated with anal cancer, so it's a very reasonable expectation that incidence of anal cancer should decrease further if the population gets vaccinated," says Leonard Saltz, MD, an attending physician at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

This is probably one more good reason for people to get the HPV vaccine, he tells WebMD.

In addition to HPV infection, smoking, multiple sex partners, and having a weakened immune system may increase risk for anal cancer.

However, some patients who develop anal cancer don't have any risk factors.
