Jackson Family Feared Morphine OD

6/26/2009 10:09 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Michael Jackson Morphine ODMembers of Michael Jackson's family told us the singer was given a "heavy dose of morphine" prior to his death, and family members were alarmed.

We're told Joe Jackson recently wanted to put Michael in a rehab facility in Palmdale, California for what he considered an "addiction" to morphine and prescription drugs.

Family members say they felt he was unable to perform for his upcoming concerts because of his drug use.

Members of the upcoming tour tell TMZ Jackson was generally lethargic and very late for rehearsals.

There are reports Jackson OD'd yesterday on Demerol, a drug similar to morphine.

Interestingly, Jackson wrote a song called "Morphine" in 1997. One of the lyrics -- "Demerol. Demerol. Oh God he's taking Demerol."

This Anna Nicole all over again, with the people close to him looking the other way and enabling him for YEARS as he spiraled out of control. And now they are all coming forward to say they thought he had a drug problem. A little to late!

Michael has been taking opiates for years we know that. His torloance for them was probbably very high.
i don't think a single dose would have killed him. Unless he was given a bigger amount to get the effects needed.
i would think he would have a doctor to dose him at the correct times to get the effective actions needed.
also we don't know if Michael may have taken something else the doc did'nt know about.

you have to be careful using opiates, you can't drink alcohol and must eat right and excerise when using them.
i use them everyday, but of course not in the quanity as MJ since he can get what ever he wants. He was under constant stress with nobody helping him! just having evil hangers-on around 24-7 using him for thier own needs

It just gives people who use them a bad name, when millions can use these drugs daily and not OD or lose the quality of like, so most think EVERYONE who takes them is a bubbling drug addict idiot.

I wish the Jackson family well and i feel the world is a little dimmer today.

Whyuhere, you hit the nail on the head. But putting blame on anyone would be wrong. It has been proven so many times over that different drugs interact in weird ways and can easily cause death. We can't blame doctors, or family members, or anyone for that matter, because no one knows how every drug interacts with everything.
Even different foods can cause adverse affects with some drugs. When my Mom was put on heart meds, the doc NEVER told her NOT to eat grapefruit with it. But I have researched it online and found that grapefruit makes a lot of different drugs react weird. Most people do not research the meds they take. And doctors do not think it is their responsibility to watch over their patients that much. Some doctors are so busy that they can't keep up with patients that well.
So people need to learn about life a little better and quit thinking that everything is all black and white, forgive me, no pun intended.
Not everyone becomes addicted to painkillers. I for one have never been addicted to anything. And believe me, I have been on so many different types of meds for depression and back pain. While in the hospital, they gave me morphine. Was sent home with Demerol and took it for about 6 months. Changed to a different painkiller because the Demerol quit working.
The past year I have been on Lorcet and I have lived with the pain for so long, that it is normal to be in pain. So I take less meds.
If MJ's doc would have changed his meds every so often, it would have been better.
But hindsight is 20/20.

RIP Michael--God Bless and keep the family in peace

All this talk about overdose is quite ridiculous. When you are having a heart attack (I have had 2) they give you morphine to stop the attack.

From Elvis Presley, to Don Simpson, to Anna Nicole to Michael Jackson. When will we teach that just because someone has a license to practice medicine, that this does not make him or her qualified to control a man or a woman's life with dangerous drugs? As a 10-year sober speaker on addiction, I have heard many stories and when it comes to out of control drug use, this is not uncommon. In the end, taking the drug is a conscious choice however and becomes less controllable as the addiction progresses and this is where I blame the doctors. They know their actions have weakened the state of their own patient and they choose to ignore this critical fact. This is why I personally would like to ask this doctor a few questions of my own. One would be: What makes you think the human body is so unreliable that it needs a shot of Demerol every day? In Michael Jackson's case, he needed to rely on his body as a dancer. Why immobilize him with drugs? I have a sneaking suspicion that Attorney General Brown is going to take a real good look at this doctor and perhaps many others who had something to do with prescribing drugs to Michael Jackson.
