Pelosi Shoots Down Jackson Resolution

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee promised fans she'd get a resolution passed in Congress honoring Michael Jackson -- but Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi just 86'd the proposal.

Nancy Pelosi: Click to watch
In a news conference moments ago on Capitol Hill, Pelosi said that while Jackson was "a great performer," a resolution "will open up two contrary views that are not necessary at this time to be expressed."

Somewhere Rep. Pete King is doing a righteous fist pump.

31. Wow. For once, I salute Nancy Pelosi. This is completely unnecessary jargon that just wastes time in Washington.

32. Good for her! A resolution honoring Michael is not necessary, despite what all his fans think. He is not the messiah so stop glorifying him.

@ #12 - If the Speaker of the House were male, would you be commenting on his looks? I hate it when female politicians are judged on their appearance or the clothes they wear. Judge them on their merits like you would with male politicians.

33. It's about time someone showed some sense in this matter. There are too many 'doubts" about his character off the stage to be giving him a congressional resolution. For those who are quick to point out he was found not guilty of any child molestation charges, I would point out that "not guilty" and "innocent" are two very different legal terms. At worst, MJ was a predatory child molester. At best, he was a mentally ill drug addict who showed very disturbing judgment when it came to his interaction with underage males.

36. Washington has a few more pressing matters to attend to - like THE ECONOMY. Loved Jackson, sad he's gone, but REALLY.

37. It is so sad to see that the Congress has lots of IDIOTS. Jackson was and will always be a Worldwide "ICON' that America does not appreciate. As of his personal life "''' IT IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS''', that is why it is called PERSONAL.

41. Let's pass a resolution to honor every serviceman who has ever died fighting for our country. Let's get real about the meaning of hero, MJ does not fit the bill. It's ridiculous that the government is even considering such insanity.. MJ was a self obsessed, dysfunctional freak! For his children s sake it's a good thing he is gone. I understand MJ was a phenomenal talent. Beyond that his relevancy has been way overstated. Al Sharpton remarks were way over the top and a slap in the face to all the major African American talents in history. He proved once a clown always a clown. Personally I think the world became a better place the minute Jackson left it.

44. She is probably jealous that she is not that popular with the people. Again, he broke the Guiness World record for being the biggest humanitarian..... He deserves it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So there Pelosi... swallow THAT!!!

45. Well don't get me wrong.. I love Michael Jackson music, I thought the man was a fabulous performer, and clearly he believed in helping others as he is in the Guiness Book of World Records as the celebrity to give the most amount of money to charities.. and that's saying a lot in the age of Oprah Winfrey who also gives tons of money to charity. Having said that, I don't think an actual day needs to be had to honor Michael Jackson because he wasn't a president or any sort of Ambassador for America per se. Nor did he do anything earth shattering like work for equal rights during the civil rights movement in the way a person like Martin Luther King Jr. did...now the MLK Day..I totally get. But MJ as much as I like his work.. He was an entertainer. And if you give him a day, you will have to go back and give Elvis a day and some will say well Frank Sinatra should have one and so on and so on. I think it's best to just let MJ fans remember him however they want. It should be up to his family to memoralize him not the government. His family can hold things annually in his honor if they want for people to attend and even sell tix if they want...but the US Gov shouldn't really get involved with this sort of thing. I can appreciate Rep Jackson-Lee's sentiment but it was ill placed.. but I am sure she meant well. But really it would cause to much drama for it to even be examined because of the accusations about MJ and the child abuse scandals...even though he was acquitted of all the charges made against him. But yeah it was cool that MJ gave so much for less fortunate people and I think most people that liked him will alway remember that and even more so the various people he helped with funding.
