Fire Capt. Blames Director For Jackson's Burns

A captain with the L.A. City Fire Department tells us the burns Michael Jackson suffered during the filming of the 1984 Pepsi commercial were caused by a director who wanted to get a more dramatic shot.

Captain Donester: Click to launch

Captain Don Donester
was at the filming, working as a fire safety inspector. Donester says after doing take after take, he overheard the director tell Jackson, "Stand there longer [under the sparks]. You'll look more majestic." According to Donester, by making Jackson stay under the sparks for a longer period of time, it would look as if the singer was emerging from the smoke and sparks.

We just spoke with the director, Bob Giraldi, who said "That's not true. Whatever." Then he hung up.

Michael Jackson: Click to watchIn Michael's autobiography, the singer backs up Donester's story, writing Giraldi "came up to me and said, 'Michael, you're going down too early. We want to see you up there, up on the stairs. When the lights come on, we want to reveal that you're there, so wait.'"

Donester says the director's decision went against the rules set by the senior fire safety inspector. Don also told us he was one of the people who helped put out the fire on Michael's head.

Various people connected with Jackson say the serious burns the singer suffered triggered his prescription drug addiction, that consumed him for the rest of his life.

152. Hey TMZ ..... Get your facts straight! That is NOT Bob Giraldi in the photo .... Giraldi is a white man - that looks like a black man your arrow is pointing to. Geez .......

153. Getitright, you got it wrong, they are pointing to the Fire captain, not the director.

155. The saddest part about this is that this is when he started using pain meds. He became addicted after this and probably became addicted to plastic surgery after this also, since he had to have work done after this. I wonder how different his life would have been if this hadn't happend to him. RIP MJ, love you forever.

156. Conveniently ommited. Girardi's website has all of his work except the infamous Pepsi commercial. Guilty conscience?
I emailed him to give him a piece of my mind.

GREED SUCKS!

157. Emma, as usual you are focusing on the treatment of what was just labeled a "disease" within my lifetime (before that it was not and is so now primarily due to it's social stigma, same with alcoholism) instead of the personal responsibility that is inherent with the personal prevention involving one's choices. All your links say nothing to aver from this simple fact. I could give you endless links to educate you in the etiology of personal responsibility as pertaining to addictions, but why not do something for yourself and search it out for yourself? Your foundation for your opinion is somewhat based on fact and somewhat twisted denial. Anyone can find something or someone to blame for their faults, weaknesses, addictions, etc., - but, the mirror reflects the source of the problem, every time.

158. Jackson sought illegal ways to assuage the pain of recovery. He shopped for places to buy what he wanted. He, then, became addicted. He was a weak personality with too much money to support his cravings, both legal and illegal.

159. Addiction is not the foundation of the problem, choice is. Jackson could have chosen not to abuse his medications and shop for quality physicians, - after all, he DID have the money. Instead he chose to shop for the bottom-feeders, the pushers, those willing to deny their oaths and ethics of their profession, - "to do no harm." These low-lifes didn't kill Jackson, he did that to himself, - but, they fed his weakness, his ego, and the weapon of choice. They WILL pay for what they did, as Michael has paid for what HE did.

160. If you ever seen patients on a burn unit, it is seriously the hardest place to work as a nurse. People are in such pain, they want to die. I can't imagine how much pain he was in. I believe it with the downward spiral on the pain meds.

161. I am not sure what MJ had on his hair, but I bet it would start an engine. Hair doesn't look like that when lit unless there is fuel on it. Have you ever seen a rag with gasoline lit? That's what his head looked like.

I still say that two more spins would have saved his scalp. Not fire can sustain the velocity of a MJ spin. It may have flown out into the audience though, but none of them probably had high octane as hair grease.

162. I think it is too long ago for a lawsuit, so why doesn't he just admit that he was a perfectionist and own up to the responsibility? It was an accident.

163. Doesn't look that bad, but probably hurt like hell for a while.

164. Why don't u people just read michael's book moonwalker and you'll find out his side of the story instead of writing stupid comments here like u know exactly what happend? according to the book written by michael he was asked to wait longer before going down, which lead to this. but seariously, read his book instead of acting like u know it all.
