Fire Capt. Blames Director For Jackson's Burns

A captain with the L.A. City Fire Department tells us the burns Michael Jackson suffered during the filming of the 1984 Pepsi commercial were caused by a director who wanted to get a more dramatic shot.

Captain Donester: Click to launch

Captain Don Donester
was at the filming, working as a fire safety inspector. Donester says after doing take after take, he overheard the director tell Jackson, "Stand there longer [under the sparks]. You'll look more majestic." According to Donester, by making Jackson stay under the sparks for a longer period of time, it would look as if the singer was emerging from the smoke and sparks.

We just spoke with the director, Bob Giraldi, who said "That's not true. Whatever." Then he hung up.

Michael Jackson: Click to watchIn Michael's autobiography, the singer backs up Donester's story, writing Giraldi "came up to me and said, 'Michael, you're going down too early. We want to see you up there, up on the stairs. When the lights come on, we want to reveal that you're there, so wait.'"

Donester says the director's decision went against the rules set by the senior fire safety inspector. Don also told us he was one of the people who helped put out the fire on Michael's head.

Various people connected with Jackson say the serious burns the singer suffered triggered his prescription drug addiction, that consumed him for the rest of his life.

47. #6. REAL DEAL

your a dumb ass. First of all Afro Sheen doesn't make black people's hair look like white people's. Second He had a "Jerry Curl" then, I don't remember to many Caucasians roaming around with those either. However yes ALL hair products are flamable. So are the damn clothes on our backs. When you film anything you are trusting the director and producers to have your best intrest and for most important your safety. I'm Sure Mj thought to himself something like this would never happen even with all the safety precautions and people standing by. Don't forget these people are paid top dollar to do their job safely they have ever so much to blame.

48. So that's where the "troubles" started - where they ended is the sad part - Get too close to a spark and anyones hair burns - so do eyelashes - if you have anything on it or not - With the search for truth about Michael I've found his own family a.k.a Joe Jackson brought a $40 million law suit against him 2 weeks before he died - so Michael had no one who he could trust only his kids - what a sad way for a great humanitarian to leave this world he gave so much to -

49. Giraldi was the idiot who was interviewed in a Jackson documentary which has aired several times the past few weeks. He had the nerve to make fun of Michael when he accidently dropped his glove in the toilet during a break filming this commercial. Giraldi mocked Jackson's voice - making high pitched, babyish sounds explaining Jackson's reaction to the incident. I have wondered why this jerk was included in this documentary - and now that it's known he was the director of the infamous commercial, I'm sure he's going to have great difficulty ever working in the film business again. Shame on him!

52. The Pope and the Roman Catholic Church are squarely behind the burning of Michael Jackson; they try to kill anyone who isn't subsurvient to the Roman Catholic Ponzi scheme and Micheal Jackson was a Cathar who was trying to sing about the final resting place of the Holy Grail, which is not a cup, but in fact is a good old fashioned Zen master's punch on the nose.

53. Poor Michael, it seems he never stood a chance. Everyone wanted a piece of his entertainment value. It was never about Michael but what he could do and money he could bring for someone else. Joe Jackson, and then promoters. I never reallized just how special he was and what he went through silently. He was a wonderful, caring and loving person.... whatever else we may have been let to believe, his heart was good.

54. They 're dragging out old news & video, it was shown 25 yrs ago and became the scandal du jour ! Let's show the same sympathy for the injured vets that are coming home with more than scalp burns.

55. There is a pattern that TMZ is exploiting here though. The arrow in the picture points at a black man. The doctor that was with MJ is a black man. Both represented companies that weren't controlled by black men, AEG and Pepsi. Don't get it twisted. These black men were agents of these white or Jewish corporations and were merely employees.

These corporations are the culpable entities that should be either prosecuted or sued in the case of AEG. Since action was taken against Pepsi already, the statute of limitations has expired, probably, in the case of the director.

Ironically, whomever MJ's manager was at the time should assume some blame also for not recognizing the volatile mix of Pyrotechnics and Gerri-curl juice. Especially when it took multiple takes to get the best footage. Nowadays we have excellent CGI to pull off those types of scenes. But they could've superimposed MJ's scene over the explosions then as well.

I have sympathy for MJ simply because he was thrust into this world of non stop entertainment and contractual obligations as a child. He grew up in an impossible cocoon of adults and managers and his Lupus, the burns, the plastic surgery and the addiction was fuel on the fire for a lot of inner problems very few people would be strong enough to manage. Didn't Eminem have a huge substance abuse problem? If he had been rapping since 5 years old, and managed and handled by huge corporations like Motown and Pepsi and others, he would have completely freaked out too.

Even the great Elvis died on the "terlet", fat and bloated and drug addicted.

56. Yay!....now we have somebody else to blame for MJ's drug addiction and eventual death! Is this ever going to stop-enough already!

58. I think it's appropriate that this footage be shown now since it allows us to see the reason for Michael Jackson's addiction. It is very sad that the person who brought us so much joy over the years suffered so much in life. To those haters who say enough already, I say I'll never be tired of hearing about Michael. His death will change the way doctors administer prescription drugs so that he'll keep on giving even though he is not physically here. To the hater who said that he used Afro Sheen to make his hair look like a white person's, since when did curly hair become white people's hair? There are products out there to make hair more manageable and everyone uses them -- black people, white people, Asians, etc. Stop with this racist talk. Get a life!
