Fire Capt. Blames Director For Jackson's Burns

A captain with the L.A. City Fire Department tells us the burns Michael Jackson suffered during the filming of the 1984 Pepsi commercial were caused by a director who wanted to get a more dramatic shot.

Captain Donester: Click to launch

Captain Don Donester
was at the filming, working as a fire safety inspector. Donester says after doing take after take, he overheard the director tell Jackson, "Stand there longer [under the sparks]. You'll look more majestic." According to Donester, by making Jackson stay under the sparks for a longer period of time, it would look as if the singer was emerging from the smoke and sparks.

We just spoke with the director, Bob Giraldi, who said "That's not true. Whatever." Then he hung up.

Michael Jackson: Click to watchIn Michael's autobiography, the singer backs up Donester's story, writing Giraldi "came up to me and said, 'Michael, you're going down too early. We want to see you up there, up on the stairs. When the lights come on, we want to reveal that you're there, so wait.'"

Donester says the director's decision went against the rules set by the senior fire safety inspector. Don also told us he was one of the people who helped put out the fire on Michael's head.

Various people connected with Jackson say the serious burns the singer suffered triggered his prescription drug addiction, that consumed him for the rest of his life.

64. A half-hour MTV special from 1984 that premiered the commercial (yes it was that big a deal, MJ was on top of the world that year) featured a long interview with the director, who refused to discuss technical details of the accident, obviously anticipating litigation, but his attitude is very telling, particularly when he's asked if he thinks he'll ever work with MJ again.

The whole special was recently posted here:

By the end of that year Pepsi reportedly settled with Michael Jackson for $1.5 million, and Jackson donated that money to the burn ward of the Brotman Medical Center in Culver City CA.

74. I don't' know why ANYONE would think Michael wears a wig after seeing this video of him in concert shaking and sweating it hard on stage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-x15ijnKQU

Because I just don't believe the hype that he was nearly bald in his last years after his 30th anniversary concert with the family.

75. Thank you TMZ. Great reporting. Keep it up. I want to hear every detail on anything related to the tragedies MJ sufferred, as well as the cause or causes of his death, so please ignore the naysayers here and get to the bottom of everything! News-wise, this information is very relevant. And I am appalled that Don Donester said nothing during all these passing years. If what he says is true, the director was negligent. That is outrageous. He should have been held accountable. And if Pepsi did buy up all the film to cover up what happened, etc., as Donester surmises, well, nothing new there. We've all seen in recent years just how outrageous and self-interested corporations can be. In contrast to the liars, cheats, hotheads, and egolmaniacs roaming around in this world, Michael Jackson is looking more and more like an angel everyday.
