Jessica Simpson --

Dates Cowboys,

Is An Indian

8/2/2009 11:06 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Jessica Simpson insists she is not an Indian giver -- but that she is, in fact, an Indian. Huh?

Jessica Simpson -- play video
Simpson angered some Native American groups when she told us earlier this week she wasn't an Indian giver -- after we asked her if she would take back a boat she bought ex-BF Tony Romo as a gift.

When we asked her about the comment last night outside of Katsuya in Hollywood, she told us, "I am Indian, alright?"

Her Indian name would be She Who Does Not Speak Good.

"Indian giver is a North American English expression used to describe a person who gives a gift (literal or figurative) and later wants it back, or something equivalent in return."

"The phrase is sometimes offensive, particularly to Native Americans"

"…early European settlers in North America misinterpreted aid and goods they received from Native Americans as "gifts," when in fact they were intended to be offered in trade, as many tribes operated economically by some form of barter system, or a gift economy where reciprocal giving was practiced. It is also theorized that this stereotype may have been coined or exaggerated by the conquering European groups to denigrate the native people as dishonest and thereby justify their conquest…"

call it what you want, racism, stereotype, bigotry, insensitivity, it all amounts to the same disrespect of a peolpe, as my elder said

"IF WE DO NOT STAND UP TO EVERY INSULT THEN PEOPLE THINK IT IS OKAY TO TREAT US ANYWAY THEY WANT WITH OUT FEAR OF RETRIBUTION"

she would not have used a derogatory term of African Americans, Jewish Americans, or any other group of people so lightly, and for her to throw around that she IS indian is just a stupid cop out so she doesnt have to admit she was wrong.

@ #13

Really? Did the African Americans "just need to get over it"? Did the Jewish?

@ # 11, you're obviously racist.

@ # 9, and you clearly aren't part of the Native community. Having Native blood and actually being PART OF the community are two different things. That's like saying standing in a garage is going to make you into a car.

@ # 3, if that's the case, the term should be redneck giver, or white-ass giver. Natives never take anything back, anything. They give, and expect nothing in return.
