What a great series that was. There are some hilarious production gaffes in the early episodes. Frid as Barnabas was fantastic.
I remember watching this as a kid, it was the only soap my grandmother would watch. Have seen all the episodes since then thanks to DVD ... neat flash from the past.
What a fab vampire he was, I think I was tortured as a young child watching this with older sibs because my boyfriends all seem to look like him...minus the teeth.
DARK SHAWDOWA WAS MY FAVORITE SHOW BACK IN THE DAY. I USE TO RUN HOME FROM SCHOOL AND WAIT FOR IT TO COME ON AT 3:30. I ALSO LIKED KATE JACKSON STINT ON THE SHOW AS WELL!
Barnabas Collins was majestic. As portrayed by Jonathan Frid, he was the epitome of the romantic gentleman vampire. Collins' tale, that of a young, 18th century man cursed with an undead existence because of a forbidden dalliance with a beautiful witch (unbeknownst to him), was the back story provided by the show's writers as viewer's fascination with the character demanded such. Mr. Frid's solidly elegant performance gave us a fleshed-out character who was much more than a campy, cartoon figure. When first he is unchained from his coffin by the hapless Willie Loomis, itinerant thug, he is most certainly a Machiavellian prince of darkness. Gradually, however, his plans to recreate his lost love goe awry as his impenetrable facade is nibbled away by a series of ghostly events. The splendor of Frid's performance is that Barnabas is eventually redeemed and, subsequently, becomes the hero. A multi-faceted character, this Barnabas, dark and doomed, yet worthy of our wishful love, will forever reign in our hearts. Mr. Frid created in him an endearing and enduring presence. Barnabas rules the night...and the dream of day.
I'm following the development of this movie with great anticipation. I reviewed one of the Dark Shadows spin-off books, "Barnabas Collins" here:

Twilight is today's Dark Shadows. However, as evidenced by prior comments, the actor, Jonathan Frid and his fellow cast members have withstood the test of time. They created magic together which obviously lives on in all our memories. It's now time to show the youngsters our
vampire who fascinated us weekly on daytime tv.
