Robin married a megalomanic and she knew it. We can all guess that the hot tempered passions of Sean is much of what attracted Robin. Robin has had her fill of "DRAMA" which Sean Penn provided her with in copious amounts to such degree that she came back to him repeatedly.
Robin like many Women is a "DRAMA" junkie and will tolerate physical abuse, even enchorage physical abuse to get the "DRAMA" fix she needs.
Most Womens instincts tell them that only a Man who cares will choose to abuse them physically and emotionally rather than walk away. It's unfortunate but a fact of reality that when Men and Women physically abuse each other it often strengthens the bond of their relationship.
Sharing the "DRAMA" via calling Police and involving the Courts provided means to exploit and cultivate additional "DRAMA". They fed off each others flaws and enjoyed it along with the attention their messed-up marriage generated.
