Judge to Brown -- I've Heard the 'Chatter'

8/25/2009 6:00 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Chris Brown was just sentenced to 5 years probation and 6 months hard labor, and the judge threatened Brown by talking about the "chatter" she hears.

Judge Patricia Schnegg said during the sentencing, "I am not immune to the chatter on the airwaves." It's unclear if she was saying that she's heard reports that Brown and Rihanna are still talking ... or if she was just saying he needs to be careful because she watches TV and reads TMZ. To us, it sounded like the former.

Down to business, the judge sentenced Brown to perform hard labor at the Commonwealth Catholic Charities in Richmond, VA, where he must also take a 52-week domestic violence course.

The judge ruled Brown -- who pleaded guilty to felony assault -- must stay 100 yards away from Rihanna, unless they are both at an entertainment-related event, in which case he must stay 10 yards away. The protective order lasts 5 years.

He must provide DNA samples as requested by authorities.

Brown must also keep in touch with the Probation Department and is subject to search and seizure 24/7 for the next 5 years. He can't own any dangerous weapons, including guns or knives.

Chris Brown: Click to watchBrown must pay $2,500 in restitution and another $2,500 in probation expenses. He must also pay a $30 criminal conviction fee -- BARGAIN! He must also pay $400 that goes into a domestic violence fund.

Brown must get prior approval before leaving the country.

As Brown left court, female fans could be heard screaming "I love you."

In the Michael Jackson case, do you think justice will be served? How many people have to die from precribtion drugs before anyone does anything? I personally think that they should use Dr. Conrad Murray & the many other doctors who prescribed Michael Jackson these pills as in's time for the world to realize that this is a serious problem in america and things should be done to stop it.

will dr.murrey be prosecuted?

What if it was Rihanna who contacted Chris will she be punished?
Is it likely for him to complete all 5 years of probation without it being lessened?
What if they wanted to get back together....could Rihanna tell the court to remove the restrainning order?

Thanks for answering!

Hi Harvey, it seems to me that Chris Brown got a lot harsher of a sentence than many other domestic violence cases. I realize that the pictures seemed bad, but there were no broken bones, concussion, etc., am i right? Was he being penalized MORE because of his fame? This is rare as usually famous people get leniency.

Was it the mixture of drugs that killed Michael, or was it the Propofol alone that killed him?

When do you tape your bit on Peoples court? Everyday and TMZ too?

IF Dr. Murray is arrested and goes on trial would MJ's children especially his eldest son have to testify about what they saw or what Dr. Murray said to them?

Harvey is there a possibility that the stay away order can be lifted in the future. I think this order is a bit harsh, is it considered harsh; is it celebrity justice or standard for domestic cases.

Excellent reporting.

I was wondering why is it that Dr. Murray refused to sign the death certificate at the hospital? Was he afraid for some reason to put his signature on the certificate?

Do you think that Rihanna will be stupid enough to ask the court to modify the protection order?

A question about Michael Jackson : so you've been cramming down our throats that he had been a "hard-core addict" for a while with "dozens of track marks all over his body, neck and hands included".

How come he passed a strenuous 5-hour physical with "flying colours" ? Won't that physical be looked into by the insurance company ? Dr. David Slavit, whoever he is, was the independent doctor in charge. Again, I ask, how could Michael Jackson pass such a meticulous physical with flying colours, if he was so far gone with drugs ? Did they pass him on purpose ? Will David Slavit be looked into ?

Will the letter sent to Pres. Obama be taken seriously?

IMO Murray will not be charged for anything, simply because of the fact that he doesn't exists at all. He's animated and brought in this story to take down all the doctors in Hollywood that are describing drugs to celebs just to fill their pockets. It is a clever way to get to investigate this thing on a bigger scale. What do you think?

5. If Rihanna contacts Chris, would some kind of penalty be put against her?

Linda, it is the convict, not his victim, whose actions the court has jurisdiction over. Brown entered a guilty plea to felony assault, remember. He didn't lose at trial, he entered voluntarily a guilty plea to this serious domestic violence crime. It's HIS actions that the court will be monitoring. The court has no jurisdiction over her actions, as SHE HAS NOT BEEN CONVICTED OF A CRIME!

Has there been any more talks on what Michael Jacksons older sister will do?
As far as leaving las vegas to come to los angeles to take care of his kids.
What about her children who already have a life and have grown up in las vegas?
