Gerard Butler -- Pug You

8/26/2009 2:30 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Gerard ButlerWe now have the poop on the Gerard Butler dog attack that occurred Monday afternoon in New York.

Here's the lowdown -- Gerard was walking his female pug Lolita when a woman with a greyhound sauntered by. We're told the greyhound attacked the pug, biting it twice. At the time of the attack, the greyhound was on a leash, but the pug wasn't. Score one for the greyhound.

But here's the deal: Butler quickly put his dog on a leash and began walking away, when the woman followed him -- greyhound in tow -- and the larger dog went in for a 3rd bite. We're told Butler blunted the potential bite by pushing the dog's snout away from his pooch.

The woman went to the cops alleging animal cruelty and we're told they got a good laugh out of it. As for Butler, he spent 3 and a half hours at the vet's office with his pug. The pug is OK.

Sources close to the situation gave us the following statement: "Bitches always seem to get Gerard in trouble."

As if he needs it, the story will only help Butler score more chicks.

UPDATE: TMZ spoke to the owner of the greyhound, who told us she's not after money and she's not going to file a lawsuit. However, she did want to say this about Gerard -- "He's a pompous son of a bitch."

UPDATE #2: The greyhound owner's dog tells a different story -- sources close to the situation tell TMZ she claimed Butler's unleashed pug charged after the greyhound. When she told Butler that his dog should be on a leash, the woman claims Gerard fired off a few expletives.

Actually, the greyhound's owner's account of what happened makes ten times MORE sense. Greyhounds are incredibly docile and pugs can be very feisty.

Also, the on-leash dog will always defend himself against the off-leash dog because he's at a disadvantage.

"The greyhound's owner's DOG tells a different story..." You mean you spoke with the actual dog, TMZ? Amazing!! ha ha!

Anyway, I have two female pugs myself, and they can be quite feisty...however, Mr. Butler's dog should have been on a leash, so he was in the wrong. Dogs act differently on leashes than off, and a normally peaceful dog can feel threatened if another, unleashed dog comes into its "personal space"...The lady who owned the greyhound was correct....his pug should have been leashed!

Sounds to me like most of you just have an issue with Butler in general. Many of these posts have nothing to do with the's more a case of insults thrown at him.

I saw the whole incident and believe it or not the Greyhound did bite at Butlers dog...unprovoked. The woman followed Butler...and yes, he was upset and ranting but I would be too if my dog was just mauled by another dog.

As I said previously, I've had a Greyhound before and we had to have it put to sleep because it attacked a couple neighborhood kids who were walking by the house not even bothering anyone. We had to pull him off of one of the kids.

Again, it sounds to me like people are just on here ready to bash Butler more out of hatred for the guy rather than the facts of what happened. The rude comments being stated by many about him are completely uncalled for and are not relavent to what is going on...

This is why I am a cat person. =P

I just hope both dogs are alright. Sometimes I think it's the owners who should be put to sleep.

But thank you, Gina (#75). Your comment makes the most sense.

#76, what makes you think Gina's comments #75 make the most sense? She saw the whole thing? She saw the greyhound 'bite at' Butler's dog? 'Bite at' does not sound like something that would require 4 hours in the vet and stitches? Gina, do you live in the neighborhood or are you one of Butler's stalkers or his assistant? And just because you had a greyhound that needed to be put down doesn't mean that this greyhound bit Butler's dog.

Those comments don't make sense at all.

His dog was not on a leash and he is lying about the greyhound BITING his dog. PERIOD!

Donating money to another person at the vet? Yeah, good way to try and avoid trouble that you knew was coming because once again you can't control your big head temper. Butler, go back to your hollywood hills behind your gated fences. You are the one who should not be let out in public unless you have a leash and muzzle on.

Aww #77, did I hurt your feelings for not picking your comment as the one that makes the most sense? You weren't there. #75 was. Between the two of you, she's the one that seems more credible, IMO. And she's not the one who's resorted to petty insults and rage.

#78 I could f'ing care less who you think makes the most sense. My point is that you are both stupid.

This site is getting dumber and dumber and lower and lower.

It's ok to joke about women as "bitches" but if someone made an equally racist "joke," he'd be fired, black people would be shrieking, and the President would have to arrange a beer summit.

This site needs to stop its endless stream of frat boy misogyny. How's that working out? Are profitable? You have alienated and lost many readers. Good luck making money off the frat boy dirt bag demo.

Also, this story is yet another example of celebrity worship. The authorities automatically side with the celebrity. This Butler dude does come across as an aggressive pompous jerk in interviews. His dog should've been on a leash. He might have been antagonizing and inflaming the situation. He seems like a real misogynist. Who knows what happened, but things in life are not always as they appear, if the cops are gossiping to blogs they need to stop already and be equally respectful of all citizens.

Yes, he shlould have had his dog on a leash, but I own 2 pugs, & they would never go after a dog & attack it. They are one of the most mellow breeds. The fact that the pug was bit 3 times shows that obvuiously the greyhound needs some training & obdience school. If the greyhound was mellow, like other reads have stated, it would not have bit. Dogs have run up to my dogs at dog parks, & they usually just sniff each other & then run around, unless one of the dogs is agressive.

If the arrogant actor spent all day at the vets (different stories have different time amount) then why isn't he showing off his poor pug with stitches and holes and blood to blame it on the greyhound? The more I find out about Butler, the more I believe the greyhound owner.

Butler is a hot tempered arrogant actor who believes he's above the law in allowing his dog off leash.
